Rules Q&A
- Q: Hmm, I feel rusty with the rules, so I'll have to ask...
* Show of Good Faith: this card says you cannot MOVE tokens/cards to/from the stolen Personality, but it doesn't say anything about ATTACHING. I saw people using it to attach an Ikiryo to a stolen high-Chi personality (with Soshi Eiji in waiting, of course). Legal, right?
A: Right. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 May 2003", 21 May 2003 - Q: To be a little more precise, here's the situation:
My opponent takes control of my Samurai with 'Show of Good Faith', attaches an Ikiryo. Then I get him back and he makes me lose honor with Sochi Eiji. Is there a possibility to react with seppuku to this honor loss?
A: No. The samurai is not targeted (Eiji's action only targets the Ikiryo), the samurai is not taking any actions, and no decisions are being made by him. The samurai may not seppuku. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 May 2003", 10 May 2003 - Q: Ikiryo card text:
Nonhuman Shadowlands Battle: Bow and destroy Ikiryo to have it make a ranged attack with strength equal to the Chi of Ikiryo's Personality. The ranged attack can target a Personality with Followers. Lose Honor equal to the Chi of Ikiryo's Personality. Dishonor Ikiryo's Personality.
Now, can this ranged attack be combined with another RA, like Spearmen or Goblin Slingers, and still target a personality with a follower?
A: No. GE rulebook, p. 63:
"Two or more cards in the same unit can combine ranged attacks as a single Battle action, adding their strengths together. They must all be able to make a ranged attack at that time and at the intended target, ..." Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 January 2003", 17 Jan 2003 - Q: Is it possible to use Soshi Eiji to target Ikiryo, as once Ikiryo's attached to a personality, the honor loss is no more variable but equal to the personality'chi ?
A: The Fall of Otosan Uchi rulesheet defines "variable" as "Not known until the moment it's used or needed." The honor loss from Ikiryo's ability does not meet this definition, meaning it's not variable, meaning Eiji can copy it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 December 2002", 20 Dec 2002 - Q: After looking at the stratagist last night and then looking at Ikiryo I am wondering if this is something I can pull off.
Ambush Strategist Rarity/Edition C Fire and Shadow [ Reprints ] Text Battle: Bow the Ambush Strategist to give each card in this unit with one or more ranged attacks a Force bonus equal to the card's highest non-variable Ranged Attack strength.
Ikiryo Rarity/Edition C Shadowlands [ Reprints ] Text Nonhuman Shadowlands Battle: Bow and destroy Ikiryo to have it make a ranged attack with strength equal to the Chi of Ikiryo's Personality. The ranged attack can target a Personality with Followers. Lose Honor equal to the Chi of Ikiryo's Personality. Dishonor Ikiryo's Personality.
If I have Bayushi Pankei (4/4) with Ikiryo and Ambush Strategist attached, can I bow the AB to give the Ikiryo a +4 bonus?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 30 May 2002", 31 May 2002 - Q: Here's a question for you:
Ikiryo Text Nonhuman Shadowlands Battle: Bow and destroy Ikiryo to have it make a ranged attack with strength equal to the Chi of Ikiryo's Personality. The ranged attack can target a Personality with Followers. Lose Honor equal to the Chi of Ikiryo's Personality. Dishonor Ikiryo's Personality.
Is this honor loss a variable one or not? Would Soshi Eiji be able to target this as an honor loss?
A: It is not variable. Eiji can target it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 April 2002", 16 Apr 2002 - Q: For example, hypothetical situation:
Ambush Strategist, according to the rules archive: *Does not give a Force bonus to cards with a variable strength ranged attack. [VRD, 21 October 2000] *Gives a Force bonus to cards with a ranged attack for which the strength is described in the card text. [VRD, 16 November 2000]
Now, is a card such as Ikiryo considered a "ranged attack for which the strength is described in the card text"? If not, what is?
A: It is.
For an example of a card that isn't, look at Yotsu Seou. "Battle: Give Seou one or more shuriken tokens as long as the total number of shuriken tokens on Seou is less than four. Produce a Ranged Attack with a strength equal to the number of tokens just given to Seou. This does not bow Seou." Jeff Alexander, "post for 27 March 2002", 28 Mar 2002 - Q: I'm afraid that I am confused by it. Does this mean that the resulting combination between a normal ranged attack and one that has the fewer restrictions (the phrase in quotes above is not a restriction, it is actually a loosening of restrictions) may still target a Personality with attached Followers?
It means targeting restrictions aren't considered traits of the Ranged Attack, like Elemental and Kiho are. I'm not sure what that ruling was issued in reference to anymore, but it sounds like someone was trying to pull something really technical and tricky with a pedantic reading of the rules.
I know why.
If Balash has an Ikiryo and Ikiryo fires against a Personality with an attached follower, you (Jeff) have ruled that Balash cannot add to it.
A: That's covered in the basic rules now: you can only combine ranged attacks if they can all shoot at the same time and at the same target. [AOF rulebook p. 63] Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 March 2002", 19 Mar 2002 - Q: 5.- Can Soshi Eiji be played against a Ikiryo? Eiji cannot be played againts variable losses, but is the loss of Ikiryo fixed by the personality wich holds it?
A: Eiji's action can be used, because it's known beforehand what the loss from the Ikiryo would be. Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 March 2002", 7 Mar 2002 - Q: "...any number of Shadowlands Personalities OR FOLLOWERS..."
Works really well for some cards (Ikiryo, f'rexample).
So, if you slap Ikyro down or some other follower/personality with zero force, are they built that turn? Or, is there a minimum 1 turn delay?
A: They are played that turn. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 March 2002", 6 Mar 2002 - Q: Will Ambush Strategist give the force bonus to Ikiryo(follower) and Firestorm Legion. Both of their range attacks are based off their personalities chi's. But is this variable, because the personalities chi is set, unless it is changed.
A: At any given time it's known how strong their attacks are. Ambush Strategist only has trouble giving non-0 bonuses to cards where their ranged attack strength isn't known until it's made. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 January 2002", 22 Jan 2002
