Rules Q&A
- Q: Ikoma Asa
Lion Clan Samurai you own in and out of play have +1 Honor Requirement, +1PH, and a maximum Personal Honor of 5.
Kitsu Nariyumi
Once per game, before Nariyumi enters play: She goes through her Gempukku. Permanently give her Samurai or Shugenja.
---
If I have an Ikoma Asa in play and I bring a Kitsu Nariyumi into and chose to make her a samurai and pay full for her, do I get the extra honor from Asa? Or does Asa check while she's in limbo between being a samurai or shugenja and then doesn't work?
Thanks.
A: EDIT: See Below. You do NOT gain the additional honor from buying Nariyumi at full that Asa would normally provide because of timing of gaining honor and when Nariyumi would become a Samurai.
Sorry about that. Dan Jacobson, "Ikoma Asa & Kitsu Nariyumi", 21 Apr 2009 - Q: With regards to this topic: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=75287
I'm assuming he meant The Utaku Plains: http://l5rsearch.com/db/search.cgi?title=utaku%20plains
In which case, I'm assuming he wouldn't gain the additional 1 honor as the rules wiki states:
He may reduce the Gold cost to play the Personality by 2. If he does not choose to do so, he may choose to gain Honor equal to the Personality's Personal Honor just before he enters play (also know as "buying for Honor"). A player may only gain Honor this way once per turn.
To gain additional honor off of a personality entering play, I'd assume the card would have to explicitly state that personality/personalities in AND out of play have +1PH (eg. Ikoma Asa).
I'm sure Zen will confirm it.
A: Correct. Things that change Personal Honor while in play can't affect gains when buying for Honor. Zen Faulkes, "Cards that affect personal honor and coming into play", 17 Apr 2009 - Q: if Ikoma Asa is in play (Lion Clan Samurai you own in and out of play have +1 Honor Requirement, +1PH, and a maximum Personal Honor of 5.) and i am playing the stronghold Vigilance Keep (After you destroy a province as the Attacker: Gain Honor equal to the base Personal Honor of one of your Personalities at that battlefield.) And i have a personality any lion clan lets say printed personal honor 3 (then Ikoma Asa's +1) equalling 4 personal honor. This person attacks and i take the province do i get his printed personal honor or his personal honor or the personal honor with asa?
A: You gain 3, his base Personal Honour:
"Base" refers to a stat or keyword that exists on a card or other entity as printed (following the most recent printing) or initially created, without modifications from effects. A card’s base value can not be changed. Alex Jones, "Ikoma Asa and Vigilance Keep", 7 Jul 2008 - Q: Ikoma Asa: Does the trait affect your Personalities on the turn that she is flipped up in one of your provinces?
A: Only herself.
http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Traits: "While their card is out of play, continuous traits affect the card they are on, and only that card, unless the trait states otherwise." Zen Faulkes, "Ikoma Asa while out of play", 20 Jun 2008 - Q: if i have one Ikoma Asa in play (Lion Clan • Artisan • Historian • Poet Lion Clan Samurai you own in and out of play have +1 Honor Requirement, +1PH, and a maximum Personal Honor of 5.)
During my dynasty phase, i put one Matsu Yufu in play paying all cost.
I gain 4 or 5 honor ?
Thanks a lot
A: If I read your example properly, you will gain 5 Honor.
The long version:
Asa is in play, so her trait is in affect (http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Traits:
"While their card is in play, continuous traits apply their effects.
While their card is out of play, continuous traits affect the card they are on, and only that card, unless the trait states otherwise.")
Her trait affects your Lion Clan Samurai that are out of play because it says so, bypassing the restriction that effects can only affect cards in play.
If you elect to not take the "Clan discount" when paying for Yufu, you gain her Personal Honor just before she enters play as an effect of her entering play (Citation). Since Asa's trait is already affecting Yufu at this point, you would gain 5. Brook Cunningham, "Ikoma Asa and Dynasty phase", 27 May 2008
