Rules Q&A
- Q: If someone If someone plays Impressive Resilience, can they use the same personality for Fearless Defense, or would it just fizzle since the cost of bowing can not be paid even though the rest of the unit can bow?
Impressive Resilience Battle: Give a target opposed Personality +2F. Negate his bowing and movement during the current Combat Segment
Fearless Defense Battle: Choose your performing unbowed Personality and bow all unbowed cards in his unit: Bow a target enemy Personality. Destroy him if his unit's total Gold Cost is lower than your Personality's unit's total Gold Cost.
A: The cost cannot be paid because the Personality does not bow. However, the action doesn't "fizzle", it may not be announced because of the Good Faith Rule: When an action is announced, the player must be able to target all required targets, meet all conditions of the action, and pay all mandatory costs, to the best of his or her knowledge. Alex Jones, "Fearless Defense vs. Bow negation", 12 Feb 2011 - Q: Dear Rules Team,
I seek your supreme wisdom and guidance once again, in relation to this ruling (viewtopic.php?f=59&t=75813&p=993982&hilit=encircled+impressive#p993982) that was made prior to Celestial Edition. Is there any change in Celestial Edition that would overturn this ruling? I'm not suggesting there is, but would like verification to solve a play-group dispute over the interaction between these 2 cards (if any).
The argument being presented to me is that anything that happens prior to resolution of a battle IS in the combat segment, and therefore Impressive Resilience would stop encircled terrain from moving a personality under its effects home.

Impressive Resilience: Battle: Give a target opposed Personality +2F. Negate his bowing and movement during the current Combat Segment.
Encircled Terrain: Battle: Before this battle’s resolution, the Attacker and Defender, in the order of your choice, each choose one of their units at the current battlefield. Move all other units there home.
Thanks in advance for enlightening us,
HN
A: The original ruling is correct.
Even though the Combat Segment and Resolution Segment happen right next to each other, there is a moment of "neither" in between the two, as there is between all steps in any sequence. This is where triggers "after X ends" and "before X (begins)" live.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Timing#Triggers: "A trigger of "after" one step in a sequence ends will happen prior to the trigger of "before" the next step begins. Both triggers happen between the two steps.
Example: A triggered trait with the trigger "after your Dynasty Phase ends" comes before a triggered trait with the trigger "before your End Phase begins,” and happens in neither phase." Brook Cunningham, "Impressive Resilience + Encircled Terrain", 7 Apr 2010 - Q: I target my Personality with Impressive Resilience, and on my next action use Courtesy on the same Personality. Will my Personality be sent home? The only required targeting on Courtesy pertaining to my Personality is that he be honorable.
A: His movement home will be negated, per the text on Impressive Resilience. Dan Jacobson, "Impressive Resilience and Courtesy", 20 Nov 2009 - Q: Encircled Terrain is in play at a battle, and I target a personality with Impressive Resilience.
My understanding is that as Impressive Resilience says "until the end of the current combat segment", the negations would not apply when the effect of Encircled Terrain goes off. Am i right?
A: The effect of Impressive Resilience ends before Encircled Terrain sends units home. Zen Faulkes, "Impressive Resilience + Encircled Terrain", 17 May 2009 - Q: Hi, another question here:
I play razor of the dawn Castle. During a battle, i play Impressive resilience on one of my samurai. My opponement targets that samurai with Unexpected Intimidation. As the move and the bowing are negated, the card kills my samurai; but i delay the death with Razor of the dawn Castle.
At the end of the turn, my samurai dies. Can i save him with a Duty, or will he be removed from the game?
Unexpected Intimidation: Battle: Bow one of your target Personalities: Move a target enemy Personality home. If this movement is negated, bow him. If this bowing is negated, destroy him. If this destruction is negated, remove him from the game.
Razor of the dawn castle: Before another player's card's effect destroys one of your Samurai: Once per turn, you may delay the destruction until the current turn ends.
Duty: Bushido Virtue Reaction: Before another player’s card’s effect destroys one of your Personalities, destroy one of your honorable Samurai Personalities at the same location: Negate the first Personality’s destruction.
Impressive Resilience: Battle: Target an opposed Personality. The target gains +2F and cannot bow or move during the current Combat Segment.
A: I'm going to talk this one over with the Rules Team. Martin Lund, "another question for the razor of the dawn", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: In regaurd to this http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=62237 I take it Impressive Resilience is also defeated by Toshi Ranbo?
Also when you said "typically trumps" here ""This can't be Negated," typically trumps, "Negate this effect," or "this card can not be [insert effect here]."" I take it you mean not always, so is there a current legal situation in SE that would not be trumped by toshi ranbo?
A: Yes, Toshi Ranbo trumps Impressive Resilience, normally.
You could have a series of "this can not be Negated" Negation effects - like say you play a Reinforce the Gates with Determination modifying it or something. That'd get through Toshi Ranbo, since Toshi Ranbo would be trying to Negate the effect of Reinforce the Gates, which Determination in turn Negates. Martin Lund, "Another Toshi ranbo question", 10 Oct 2007 - Q: If I target dishonored personality A with Impressive Resilience and he is later targeted by Insolence Punished, does he go home(?)
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Impressive Resilience + Insolence Punished", 11 Jun 2007
