Rules Q&A
- Q: If Entrenched Position negates the actions effects (let's say a Naval Ranged Attack), can I still react with Incredible Resilience?
A: In most cases, including your example, the answer is "yes". The effects were negated, not the targeting, so Incredible Resilience still has a trigger.
However, some targeting is optional or conditional, such as being preceded by "You may target..." or "If X happens, target Y...". Those examples of targeting are part of effects, and will not happen if effects are negated. Brook Cunningham, "Entrenched Position / Incredible Resilience", 6 Oct 2011 - Q: As the matter below is about choosing instead of targeting:
Incredible Resilience Reaction: After the resolution of an enemy player's Battle action that targeted one of your Personalities: The player chooses and bows one of his unbowed Personalities at the current battlefield.
Heart of Fudo Limited: Remove from the game three of your Fudo Holdings with different titles: Create a 10F/5C/0PH Nonhuman • Fudo Personality with the trait "Cards' effects will not bow this Personality or move him home."
Assuming there is already a Nonhuman Personality created by Heart of Fudo's ability on the battlefield, the sequence is as follows:
1. Player A plays Incredible Resilience as a reaction to an earlier Player B's action 2. In order to satisfy Incredible Resilience's effects, Player B chooses the Heart of Fudo's Personality.
The questions:
A. Will that Personality bow in that instance? B. If not, can player A choose this Personality to satisfy the Incredible Resilience's effect (is it a legal choice)? C. What about A. and B. in case of "target" in place of "choose"?
Many thanks.
A: "Will not" indicates that a given effect won't happen. Unlike "May not", it places no restrictions on targeting or choosing for an effect. Both "Will not" and "May not" will prevent something being chosen to pay a cost.
So...
A. Will that Personality bow in that instance? No.
B. If not, can player A choose this Personality to satisfy the Incredible Resilience's effect (is it a legal choice)? Yes
C. What about A. and B. in case of "target" in place of "choose"? No difference. Alex Jones, "Incredible Resilience vs. Heart of Fudo's Personality", 4 Aug 2010 - Q: Scenario Battle: I have X number of personalities at the battlefield and my opponent has Hida Kuon xp6, who is alone and unbowed, and I have not currently targeted Kuon with any actions. Opponent plays an action which targets one of my personalities and I react with Incredible Resilience. What happens? Since he chooses who to bow and I don't target Kuon with Resilience, does Kuon bow or does it not happen per Kuon's trait?
Incredible Resilience Reaction: After the resolution of an enemy player's Battle action that targeted one of your Personalities: The player chooses and bows one of his unbowed Personalities at the current battlefield.
Hida Kuon (Experienced 6) If Kuon is the only Personality in his army, before the resolution of the enemy leader's first action that targeted Kuon this battle: Its effects do not happen. Battle: Even if Kuon is bowed, if any enemy units are at the current battlefield: Move your target Personality there. If he moved, straighten him.
Thank you for your time.
A: Incredible Resilience doesn't target ("choose" is never synonymous with "target", no matter who does the choosing).
Thus, it will never cause Kuon's trait to trigger. Brook Cunningham, "Hida Kuon (Experienced 6): The compilation", 3 Jul 2009
