Rules Q&A
- Q: Open Emotion [IvE, Rare] 0GC Bushido Virtue*Honesty Bushido Virtue Open: Rehonor a target Samurai. Bushido Virtue Open: Target your unbowed Samurai. Show a Strategy in your hand. Once this turn, while you are the Defender, you may take a Battle action from that card as an Engage action.
Insight [IvE, Rare] 0GC Dark Virtue*Insight Dark Virtue Battle: Target your Samurai. Look at the top three cards of any Fate deck. You may rearrange them. You may take an additional Battle action to play one of them that is a Battle Strategy.
If I target my Samurai with Open Emotion's 2nd open action and show Insight. I then choose to play Insight as my Engage action, looking at my opponent's Fate deck and pick a card with a Battle Strategy amongst them. What happens? Do I get to play that card immediately (as an Engage)? Or is the opportunity wasted and just gain an extra battle action to play that card after the Engagement phase?
A: The additional Battle action granted by Insight is taken as an additional action in the Engage Segment's Action Round.
For more information, see "Action Round" on p24 of the Comprehensive Rules, and "Additional actions" on p42. Alex Jones, "Strategies: Open Emotion + Insight", 25 Apr 2014 - Q: With Celestial Edition, new wordings have been applied to some cards. In this case, Insight. If a Ring shows up in the 3 cards, do I get to play it or not? I do not know if this still applies, so I asked for clarification.
A: No, you can no longer play Rings via Insight, due to its Most Recent Printing (or "MRP").

Cardinal Rule #2:
"Cards vs. cards: New versions of cards with a given title may sometimes be printed, and L5R is printed in several languages. If different printings contradict each other, follow the most recent English-language printing of the card." Brook Cunningham, "Insight, Rings and Strategies", 18 Oct 2009 - Q: In response to this: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=72391
I apologize if I'm being overly semantic, but I did look up my question first (unfortunately not the Insight question, sorry) and was asking b/c even though the Creature keyword is equivalent to the Nonhuman keyword, is the Nonhuman keyword equivalent to the Creature keyword?
I ask b/c I remember in Lotus when several things (namely Onis and a few others) were Nonhuman but not considered to be Creatures.
A: Well, as a member of the "Legacy Council", who made the decision to enact the rule, let me explain:
For simplicty, the Creature keyword was made equivalent to the Nonhuman keyword. And, maybe the Legacy Wiki could be clearer, that doesn't just mean the bold keywords on Personality and Follower cards; it applies to ALL instances. That is, everywhere in game text that you see the keyword "Creature", read, "Nonhuman" (i.e. Radakast Exp, Way of the Zokujin, Strange Politics, etc.). Brook Cunningham, "Creatures", 10 Dec 2008 - Q: (F)or cards that interact with Creatures, do they not apply to Truest Test Ratlings as they're lacking the keyword?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Legacy_Format_Chan ... t_Rulebook:
"Any card with the Naga, Ogre, Oni, or Ratling keyword is considered to also have the Nonhuman keyword."
"The Creature keyword is equivalent to the Nonhuman keyword." Zen Faulkes, "Keywords, and Insight", 9 Dec 2008 - Q: I play Insight (looking the top 3 of my deck), and another copy of insight comes from it, and I play it. My question is: will I put aside the two other cards from the first insight, and look at another 3, or will I look at only another card only, and will look at the same two other cards I saw on the first insight, considering Insight says "Look at the top 3 cards", and in theory they never leave the deck.
A: Playing a second Insight from a first will indeed only let you look at 1 more card. It's not just theory that those other 2 cards don't leave the deck (emphasis mine below):
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_L#Look: "Look: Inspect a face-down card without showing it to anyone else or changing its position (such as in a deck)." Brook Cunningham, "Multiple Copies of Insight", 14 Sep 2008 - Q: Is it legal for the opposing player to look at the 3 cards of my fate deck, then target his bowed samurai (only has bowed samurai in the battle) with my Stay Your Blade, knowing he cannot pay the cost then discard the Stay Your Blade into my Discard pile?
My contention is that it is a violation of the Good Faith Rule to do the above.
Insight - Dark Virtue Battle: Target one of your Samurai: Look at the top 3 cards of any Fate deck. If any are Action cards or Rings, you may play one of them for an additional Battle Action on it. You may rearrange the order of the remaining cards you looked at.
Stay Your Blade - Battle: Bow and move home one of your target opposed Samurai Personalities: Draw three cards.
Good Faith Rule: When an action is announced, the player must be able to target all required targets, meet all conditions of the action, and pay all mandatory costs, to the best of his or her knowledge.
Comments below the actual rule that are relevant.
If any required targets do not exist or any costs cannot be paid at this point, or if a required condition is not met, the announcement of the action is a play mistake. In that case, if the action’s ability was on an Action card, return that card to the area it came from (usually, the player's hand). The timing point after the action is announced is not reached. The action does not count against the player’s chance to take an action, nor is its ability considered used.
A: Your contention is correct.
Insight allows an opponent to play your cards, but nothing in its text waives any other requirements or restictions, including Good Faith. He could find your Stay Your Blade, Insight's text would allow him to play it despite it being yours, but he could not announce it, knowingly unable to pay its costs, due to Good Faith. Brook Cunningham, "Good Faith Rule and Insight", 12 Apr 2008 - Q: Suppose I use Insight to look at the top 3 cards of my opponent's Fate deck, find a Ruthless Advance there and use it to kill my own defending Sentei no Oni (exp). Can I now use Sentei's Reaction as technically it was my opponent's card's effect that destroyed him?
A: Looks that way, yes. Zen Faulkes, "Insight + Sentei no Oni (exp)", 5 Apr 2008 - Q: What if I use Insight, look at the top 3 cards of my deck and then use a Manti's Strenght that was among that cards, after the Manti's Strenght resolves I would attach Pincers and Tail as reaction and then will return the other two cards from Insight that I haven't used to the top of my deck. In this case will I get an extra battle action?
A: No.
Insight does not attach a card as one of its effects.
The Mantis's Strength does not attach a card as one of its effects.
Pincers and Tail does not attach as a Battle action. Zen Faulkes, "Eastern Hub Port, Pincers and Tail and Insight", 14 Nov 2007
