Rulings
- Q: Shoju Sensei has the Shadowlands trait. Does an Iris Festival destroy the Sensei? A: No. The words at the top of Sensei cards are a list of which Clans can play them. They're not traits in the usual sense. The "Foo" rule does not apply. By the way, "Sensei" itself is also a new type of card, not just a trait. Cards and rules that deal with Sensei cards do not apply to existing cards with the "Sensei" keyword on them, like Akodo Kage. The Imperial Herald, Issue 12, p. 32
Rules Q&A
- Q: A question about this unusual, "traited" event (it has the SL trait)...since it has a lasting game effect, does it, or some tainted portion of it "remain in play" after it resolves? The reason the question arises is because one wonders if something like Iris Festival will destroy its lasting effect.
A: Iris Festival destroys cards. No card is in play. The Event resolves, starts an ongoing effect, then goes into the discard pile. Its effects can't be destroyed by Iris Festival any more than chi penalty tokens from a Blackened Claws can. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 December 2002", 13 Dec 2002 - Q: I need a clarification regarding "Shadowlands card" wording in a Legacy format. More precisely, does a Shadowlands trait define a card as "Shadowlands card"? Let's take the following example:
Say I have a shugenja with Seek the Stain spell attached. During the next two turns, I hand out Shadowlands trait to two of my opponent's personalities. On the third turn, Iris Festival is revealed in one of my provinces.
Question: Will the two personalities with the Shadowlands trait, gained through Seek the Stain, be destroyed?
Seek the Stain (Spell) Open: Bow this card and target another player's Personality: You find out his dark secret. Give him Kolat, Ninja, or Shadowlands.
Iris Festival (Event) Destroy all Shadowlands cards.
A: There is no difference between "a Shadowlands card" and "a card with the Shadowlands keyword". These terms are equivalent and interchangeable.
That said, effects have a default duration of "until the turn ends". Seek the stain does NOT give out Shadowlands "permanently" (compare to, say, Soul's Sacrifice), so the Iris Festival in your example would not destroy those Personalities, as they would have lost the keyword by the time it resovled.
