Rulings
- Erratum: Should read, "Isawa Riake 1F/3C 5HR 8G 2PH Phoenix Clan Master of Water. Shugenja. Soul of Isawa Tomo. Elemental Battle: Bow Riake to move a unit from one of the defender's Province's to another." [Erratum, Gold Edition rulebook] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 105
- Erratum: Isawa Riake should refer to herself in her text, not "Natsumi". [errata] Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, May 21, 2003, p. 14
- Q: I want to use Isawa Riake to move one of my opponent's units. Can I? And does she have to be in the battle? A: There are no restrictions on Riake herself that she can only move your own units or that she has to be in the current battle, so, in general, the answers to these questions are "Yes" and "No". But... Isawa Riake interacts more often with the Rules of Presence and Relevance [pp. 53-54] than perhaps any other card in L5R history, and often one of those rules will restrict how Riake can be used in a particular situation. With Riake, there are three distinct cases that come up: 1. You have no one at all in the current battle. 2. You have one or more units in the current battle, but the Riake you're using is somewhere else. 3. The Riake you're using is in the current battle. In Case #1, the only legal use for Riake is to move one of your own units into the current battle from another one. In Case #2, you can move a unit belonging to any player between the current battle and one of the other battles, in either direction. In Case #3, you can move a unit belonging to any player from any battle to any other battle. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, May 21, 2003, p. 8
Rules Q&A
- Q: This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
A: *Please* post in plain text. Pretty much every mail software program has the ability to turn off formatting. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 20 May 2002", 21 May 2002 - Q: Isawa Riake
Should read, "Isawa Riake 1F/3C 5HR 8G 2PH Phoenix Clan Master of Water. Shugenja. Soul of Isawa Tomo. Elemental Battle: Bow Riake to move a unit from one of the defender's Province's to another." [Erratum, Gold Edition rulebook]
Aftermath
A resolved battle is still a battle until the Attack Phase ends. (Note that only defending units remain in battle after resolution.) [ZF, 8 June 2000] Units in a resolved battle are still part of an army. (Note that only defending units remain in battle after resolution.) [ZF, 8 June 2000]
Here's the question. Let's say the attacker has one unit attacking Province A. Defender defends with Isawa Riake in Province A. Attacker resolves Provinces B, C, D and no provinces are destroyed. You get to Province A, can Riake move the attacking unit to Provinces B, C, or D even though the battles are resolved?
A: Yes. Each of those is "another of the defender's Provinces". Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 January 2002", 24 Jan 2002 - Q: 2. When can you use Isawa Riake?, or more importantly, when can't you use her?
A: You can't use her if her action fails to satisfy either the Rule of Presence or the Rule of Relevance. If you either have a unit there already or are moving one of your own in, AND the action comes from, targets, or affects something in the current battle, she's legal.
If you have no units in the current battle at all, you can only use her to move one of your own units into it from a different one.
If you have one or more units in the current battle, but not Riake herself, you can move any unit between the current battle and a different battle.
If Riake herself is in the battle, you can use her to move any unit between any two battles. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 November 2001", 3 Nov 2001 - Q: Second, and this may have already been answered, can Isawa Riake move a unit to a battle at a province which was a lready destroyed that attack phase?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 October 2001", 8 Oct 2001 - Q: Isawa Riake - Gold Edition text is: "Phoenix Clan Shugenja. Master of Water *. Soul of Isawa Tomo Battle Elemental: Bow Natsumi to move a unit from one of the Defender's Provinces to another." HUH???? Who is Natsume?
A: There's errata at the back of the Gold rulebook that covers that change. I would guess that her name changed as things were going to print. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 23rd", 23 Jul 2001
