Rules Q&A
- Q: The GE version was NON-EXP, but counted as Iuchi Shahai for Uniqueness, so this form is truly an Experienced form.
So, for Open play The experienced Shahai will overlay Shahai, but not Iuchi Shahai exp or Iuchi Shahai. Right?
A: You can't have Iuchi Shahai xp. and Shahai nonexp. in play at the same time. That is all the relationship there is between those cards.
Iuchi Shahai nonexp. and Iuchi Shahai xp. are one distinct path of experience.
Shahai and Shahai xp. are another completely distinct path of experience.
The only overlap between the two is that Shahai counts as Iuchi Shahai for Uniqueness - Not Experience Levels. The two paths are completely separate. Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 November 2004", 12 Nov 2004 - Q: I was reading on this list earlier how Shrine of the Ki-rin can save people like Iuchi Shahai since the modifiers came from tokens rather than actions. So I was wondering then if by an extension of this ruling, Togashi Genshuo (who can't normally be recieve force bonuses from actions) can benefit from tokens from a dragon tattoo.
A: He can. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 October 2001", 11 Oct 2001 - Q: If I have Ki-Rin's Shrine in play and I use Shahai's battle ability twice, what happens?
1.- Shahai dies, as the action comes from herself so the Shrine doesn't save her from death. 2.- Shahai survives, as the penalty doesn't come from the action but from the token, and the token is not a card, so the Shrine keeps her alive.
A: #2. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 October 2001", 6 Oct 2001 - Q: This is still making NO sense, as it's a unique, non-experienced Iuchi Shahai that is, apparently, not an MRP on either.
A: Shahai "counts as Iuchi Shahai for Uniqueness". That means the Shahai card cannot go into the same deck as any card with the title "Iuchi Shahai" and the "Unique" trait. Nor can both be in play at the same time. This is straight from the rulebook. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 12-13 June", 16 Jun 2001 - Q: "Shahai" seems to be a MRP to "Iuchi Shahai Exp.". She now unaligned, has the trait "Dark Daughter of Fu Leng", and counts as Iuchi Shahai for uniqueness. However the trait "Experienced Iuchi Shahai" is missing. Is this a mistake? Can you still overlay the non-experienced Iuchi Shahai with this card?
A: Apparently not. The Shahai card walks such a fine line between new card, MRP, and reprint that it doesn't surprise me we couldn't iron all the idiosynchrocies out. Jeff Alexander, "replies to the 5 June digest", 10 Jun 2001 - Q: Iuchi Shahai has the battle ability to give herself a -1F/-1C maho token and then, if she's still alive, give one to someone else, and this can be done 3 times per turn.
Uncertainty gives a target personality -2F/-2C, but states that the target's chi may not go under 1 chi.
So, can I drop Uncertainty on Shahai and keep her alive while she doles out the maho?
A: Sure. There's nothing special about Shahai's ability that would override the effect of Uncertainty. She'll still die at the end of the turn, though, because the tokens will still be there when the effect of Uncertainty wears off. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for January 26th", 27 Jan 2001 - Q: Relevant text:
Yajinden Maho Reaction: Even if Yajinden is bowed, before a Maho effect gives one of your Personalities a Chi penalty: Another Personality of your choice receives it instead.
Iuchi Shahai Maho Battle: Three times per turn: Give Shahai a -1F/-1C Maho token. If she is still in play, you may target another Personality and give him a -1F/-1C Maho token.
If Yajinden is in play, and Shahai cuts herself ... what happens? Basically, the short form of this question is: does the redirection sever the chi penalty from the other aspects of Maho token (and, if so, is that temporary?), or does Yajinden actually stick Shahai's entire self-inflicted Maho on some innocent victim?
A: The "it" in "receives it instead" only refers to the Maho Chi penalty that your Personality was going to receive, per Yajinden's trigger. The other, optionally targeted one, can go wherever you like. Brook Cunningham, "Yajinden + Iuchi Shahai", 21 Mar 2013
