Rulings
- Q: The Jade Works card says "Bow to produce 5 Gold if paying for a Jade card." Does that mean those cards with the jade backs? A: Nonono! Those are Fate cards. And the backs aren't jade, they're green. (This is an Official Ruling on the card back colors. Sucker your friends into bar bets!) Jade cards have the word "Jade" in the title. In the Imperial Edition, the only cards which qualify are the Jade Works itself, the Jade Bow, and the Jade Hand. Sorry. The Imperial Herald, Vol. 1, Issue 1, p. 10
Rules Q&A
- Q: Minor Illusions Reaction: Bow this Shugenja after a holding is bowed to negate all effects of the Holding other than Gold production.
If my opponent has a Shrine to Daikoku in play that has targeted a Jade Works, and bows the Shrine to pay a gold cost, can I react with Minor Illusions to negate the effects of the +1 gold production on the Jade Works until the end of the turn?
A: Yes. Anything other than a creation, destruction, or change of control effect would be considered something that could be negated by using Minor Illusions. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for June 19, 2003", 19 Jun 2003 - Q: Hi, I want to know if I have only the gold to buy a personality completly (for example 2 Jade Works for a Hida Rohiteki exp.) can I tell the other player that I don't take the honor?
A: You always have the option of saying "I'm reducing her Gold cost by 2", which prevents you from gaining Honor. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 Oct 2002", 9 Oct 2002 - Q: In a message dated 5/8/02 2:19:25 PM Eastern Daylight Time, writes:
Kuni Utagu
Hmmm does he count? I know his card includes the word jade, but doesn't it have to be in the title???
A: Kuni Utagu, Jade Champion, is a "jade" card. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 May 2002", 30 May 2002 - Q: Hmmm does he count? I know his card includes the word jade, but doesn't it have to be in the title???
A: Dark Allies rules, pg 33: No. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 29 May 2002", 30 May 2002 - Q: Well, I got into an arguement with a friend of mine over this the other night, at the local L5R night, and I have to ask: When a holding is brought into play, (We'll say Jade Works for example, just to name a random one) is it considered attached to the Province it came from, and destroyed when a Province is, or does it become independant of the Province and stick around after?
A: Nothing stays associated with its original Province except Regions and Fortifications. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 May 2002", 2 May 2002 - Q: I have a card, Jade Works, that sais that it gives 3 gold for any card and 5 gold for a Jade card. But I don´t know what a Jade card is!So tell me, what is a Jade card?
A: Any card with "Jade" in the title or as a trait printed in bold. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 June 2001", 22 Jun 2001 - Q: Repine, James writes: Can I bow my Stronghold to buy the 10G Personality, then, once my opponent declines to Kolat Bookkeep me, bow the two Jade Works for the rest (and, if KB is played, I'll then bow the Jade Works for something else)? Or do I have to first try to meet the full cost, and then see whether something happens?
You have to announce how you are paying for the personality in full and then see if your opponent does something. Also note, if you can fulfill the cost another way (i.e. bowing other holdings), you may do so in order to cover the cost of the card in question.
For more complicated questions about such timing, one could add corrupt holdings, an Honor Requirement on the Personality, and various tricks like The Wind's Truth with possible reactions to it - basically, the question is, can the cost payment be lumped into one big trigger for possible reactions, or is there a sequence?
Can you be a little more specific? If you bow 2 corrupt gold producing holdings, they are separate honor losses..... (not sure what else you mean).
Well, if I bow a corrupt Holding, that starts a "lose Honor" trigger. When that happens, Reactions can start happening (Imperial Favor, The Wind's Truth). Since The Wind's Truth is Political, that can start duels (Enough Talk!). Someone may end up dying as a result of this, which means lots of things can happen, including initially uninvolved people dying (if someone loses a Personality of a Clan they have the Sword for, the Sword-bearer loses Chi, and this may result in him dying - possibly dishonorably).
An incredible lot of things can happen when someone bows a corrupt holding. When more than one such holding is bowed, it can be even worse - so I'd like to know what the precise timing of this would.
A: It's just like any other Reaction chain. As soon as there is a legal trigger, the whole chain starts. Assuming infinite hand size, it would concevably be possible for a whole game to be won or lost in the Reaction chain following the bowing of one corrupt holding, without ever reaching the resolution of the action the holding was bowed to pay for. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for January 26th", 27 Jan 2001 - Q: Keith Tobeck writes: In a message dated 1/24/01 11:35:50 AM Eastern Standard Time, writes:

If someone negates the gold you are generating to pay for a personnality (kolat infiltrator and kolat bookkeeper for instance) you still have the ability to try and generate gold from any source you have. This was ruled a long time ago..though I cant say when as its been that long. Generating gold is not an action..so you can bow to your hearts content even after your opponent negates some of it. If you cannot pay for the card, all the gold you produced is taxed..ie the emporer says thanks for the money. You cannot spend the gold on another card.
OK, the real question I was asking is, can I use my Stronghold first, give my opponent an opportunity to play Kolat Bookkeeping, so that, if he declines, I now have the Gold produced and can go on producing for my Personality; and if he does play KB, I can use my Holdings for something else.
A: No. You have to announce what you are trying to do, as well as how you are paying for it, all at once when you start payment. If something messes with that (Kolat Infiltrator), you have an opportunity to make up the gold that you have just lost. You also have the ability to change things about the purchase that you're trying to make (buying someone for 2 less, paying less gold for a variable cost card), if that will make the purchase legal. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for January 26th", 27 Jan 2001 - Q: The one thing I'm not sure about Kolat Bookkeeping is this: can one generate Gold "in sequence" to pay for a card? Like, suppose I have 2 Jade Works and a 4 Gold Stronghold, with a third Jade Works, a 3 Gold Personality, and a 10 Gold Personality in Provinces.
Can I bow my Stronghold to buy the 10G Personality, then, once my opponent declines to Kolat Bookkeep me, bow the two Jade Works for the rest (and, if KB is played, I'll then bow the Jade Works for something else)? Or do I have to first try to meet the full cost, and then see whether something happens?
A: According to the FAQ, you need to meet the full cost first and then see whether something happens. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 23 January 2001", 25 Jan 2001 - Q: What is the projected legality date for Shadowlands Sickness and Jade Works?
A: As printed on the card, Shadowlands Sickness became legal in Ivory and 20 Festivals games as of 1st April 2015.
Jade Works became legal with Ivory Edition. Alex Jones, "Promo Legality", 22 May 2015 - Q: [jade] Are retainers a type of holding? Meaning, can the card Blackmail target oracle of fire? Or only things like jade works and such?
A: Holdings are a card type that may or may not have the "Retainer" keyword. Having it does not make them not still be Holdings, just like Personalities are a card type that may or may not have the "Samurai" (or any number of other) keyword(s). Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 20 Apr 2026
