- Reaction: After Focus Effects resolve: Resolve the duel only by comparing the value of the Personalities' duel stat as it was immediately before the challenge, plus the focused cards' base Focus Values. (Ignore other effects which alter stats, Focus Values, or the duel's outcome before it is determined.) The Double Chi keyword works as usual. If either Peronality's controller has not focused, each may focus an additional time, starting with the challenged Personality. (These last two effects override previous effects which negated Double Chi or prevented either player from focusing.)

- Erratum: Reads, "Judgement of Toshiken 0G 2FV Reaction: Play this card after players reveal Focus cards in a duel. Resolve the duel only by the Chi (or other stat noted on the card creating the duel) of the dueling Personalities before the challenge, plus the Focus cards' printed Focus values. The Double Chi trait works as usual. If either Personality has not focused, each can focus an extra time, starting with the challenged Personality." [MRP, Gold Edition, 1 July 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 22
- Applies for the entire duration of the duel. Cards played after it are subject to its effects. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 22
- Reactions and other card effects may still be legally played during a duel, and will have their full effect for their normal duration after the duel resolves (e.g., Poisoned Weapon). [VRD, 3 July 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 22
- Cannot prevent Another Time from taking effect, because it resolves as soon as it is revealed. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 22
- Prevents automatic win from Unprepared, because revealing Focus cards is part of duel resolution. [JA, 30 July 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 22
- Applies to effects that change who wins/loses/ties a duel, not those that alter what happens when a Personality wins/loses/ties. [JA, 26 September 2000] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 22
- Thus, it will not beat the "win instead of losing if tied" trait of Doji Reju and Hitomi Reju. [Reversal, JA, 23 September 2000] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 22
- Neither Personality may strike in place of focusing again. [JA, 10 December 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 22
- Whether one Personality focuses does not affect whether the other may focus. [JA, 14 December 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 22
- There is a "reveal focus cards" step after any extra cards are focused. Cards that have an effect when revealed operate normally (e.g., Another Time). [JA, 2 May 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 22
- Restores the working of Double Chi if a card suppressed it (e.g., Shreiking Mujina). [JA, email, 16 September 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 22
- Restores the ability to focus if it was prevented. [JA, 15 July 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 22
- Applies to all card effects which alter Chi, focus values, or how the resolution of the duel is handled. This includes Togashi Yoshi and the Double Chi trait. Does not apply to Toshimoko Sensei because Sensei text is considered to be on your Stronghold and Strongholds are not cards. Applies for the entire duration of the duel. (In other words, cards played after it, such as Poisoned Weapon, will still be affected.) Does not apply to bonuses/penalties which were already in place before the challenge was issued, such as Touch of Amaterasu. Does not change a non-Chi duel to a duel of Chi. [ZF] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 35
- Focus on... Judgement of Toshiken: This reaction renders null and void all card effects which alter Chi, focus values, or how the resolution of the duel is handled. This includes Togashi Yoshi, the Double Chi trait, and Kharmic Strike (but not Toshimoko Sensei, because Sensei text is considered to be on your Stronghold and Strongholds are not cards). It applies for the entire duration of the duel, affecting even cards played after it, such as Poisoned Weapon. It has no effect on bonuses or penalties which were already in place before the challenge was issued, such as Strength of Purity or Touch of Amaterasu. It does not change a non-Chi duel to a duel of Chi. The Imperial Herald, Issue 14, p. 46
- Q: What, exactly, does Judgement of Toshiken negate? A: It negates reactions to the challenge or duel or to anything that happens during them. It negates any special effects of focussed cards, such as Strike of Flowing Water, Kharmic Strike, and Burning Your Essence. It negates effects that alter focus values or Chi during duels, such as Lord Moon's Blood, Ambition, and the Double Chi trait. It does not negate any effects which existed prior to the challenge, such as the +1C from Oath of Fealty or the +1 focus value from Touch of Amaterasu. It does not negate reactions that never affect the outcome of the duel, such as Feign Death and One Koku. The Imperial Herald, Issue 13, p. 34
Rules Q&A
- Q: Does Judgment of Toshiken make Double Chi work again for the challenger of Revealing the Ancient Wisdom? I ask because of the line "The Double Chi trait works as usual" on JoT. Maybe I'm being too much of a literalist, but it seems like this works.
A: "As usual" for the Revealing duel is "not at all". You do not gain the benefit of adding your focuses twice. Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 January 2003", 21 Jan 2003 - Q: My first question is, what happens when Judgment of Toshiken is played during a duel created by a Geisha Assassin? I'm guessing that the Geisha's Chi stays at the initial amount, and the person targetted gets to Focus again. Is that correct?
A: Correct. (Well, they'd both get to focus again, but the Assassin can't.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 August 2002", 23 Aug 2002 - Q: 2) Dueling situation. Player A plays Poisoned Weapon. Player B plays Judgment of Toshiken. Player A plays a second Poisoned Weapon. It's accepted from the archives that the -6 Chi til the end of the turn still takes effect, but does the second Poisoned Weapon affect the outcome of the duel? It was ruled that it did in a recent game, but after rereading the cards, I would think that it would not.
A: Judgement of Toshiken says to resolve the duel based on pre-challenge Chi (or other duel stat) plus printed Focus values. No bonuses or penalties applied before or after will change that fact or have any impact on the duel's outcome -- aside from possibly killing a participant before the duel resolves, since actual Chi is still used to determine when a Personality dies at 0. Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 March 2002", 26 Mar 2002 - Q: 3) Another dueling question. How does Judgment of Toshiken interact with cards like Burning Your Essence or A Perfect Cut? Do they count as a 0 focus, or do they maintain their text-modified focus values?
A: Cards which say their "printed" or "base" Focus value changes will use that new value. If neither of these terms is used, then the card is changing its current Focus value but not its printed value. Neither Burning Your Essence nor A Perfect Cut change their own "printed" Focus value, so they both add just the number in the yellow circle, which is 0 in both cases. Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 March 2002", 26 Mar 2002 - Q: The pertanent line in judgement reads: If either Personality has not focused, each can focus an extra time, starting with the challenged Personality.
If a personality has focused but the other personality has not, and Judgement of Toshiken is played, do both personalities get to focus again?
A: Yes. That's exactly what it says. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 February 2002", 9 Feb 2002 - Q: Judgment of Toshiken - I assume that this undoes effect that make a duel use a statistic other than Chi, if the effect come from something other than the card that started the duel.
A: Yes. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 14th", 14 Aug 2001
