Rules Q&A
- Q: I saw a few question regarding Tsubo and other Sake token, but nothing regarding Justly Earned Victory.
The situation I am curious about is when Tsubo comes into play, he gains 5 +1 Force Sake tokens. I remove one per his text, then use Alone with One's Thoughts to add 3 more Sake tokens. I proceed to attack with him and my opponent plays Justly Earned Victory during the battle. I believe the three tokens added from Alone with One's Thoughts are the only tokens negated since the original four remaining tokens came from a trait, not an action. Is this correct?
Also, do I remove the original tokens every turn first? Am I able to choose what Sake token to remove as it simply says Sake token?
Thank you for your time.
A: Justly Earned Victory negates the force bonuses only from tokens created by actions, not by traits.
You may remove any Sake token on Tsubo for his trait - including ones created by Humble House, which will not then require another Sake token to be removed. Alex Jones, "Tsubo the Drunk and Justly Earned Victory", 2 Jun 2011 - Q: Apologies if this has already been answered, but I searched and could not find anything.
Does Kakita Furegami's "Set his force to 0" ability count as a force penalty as far as Justly Earned Victory is concerned?
Cheers
A: Yes, it is a penalty if the target's Force was above 0 when it was "set to 0".
Setting stats to a value is done by giving it an appropriate bonus or penalty (see here). Brook Cunningham, "Kakita Furegami vs Justly Earned Victory", 4 Apr 2011 - Q: The new wording of Low Stance's Focus Effect: Focus Effect: Before this duel’s resolution, negate all bonuses to each focused card’s Focus Value until the duel ends.
Is the default reading of this: "Negate all current bonuses" a la Justly Earned Victory
OR
"Negate all current and new bonuses" a la Resilient Naginata
A: Under what situations would it matter? Specifics help clarify the problem so we can answer it more precisely. Zen Faulkes, "Low Stance", 5 Jan 2011 - Q: In this topic I asked about Justly Earned Victory because I was confused by the rule wiki.
What I found was that the FAQ said one thing but another part of the forum said another. Here's a link to the part of the Wiki that says that token bonuses are not negated by Shameful Injure and JEV.
http://rules.l5r.com/Main_changes_in_Rules#Major_functional_changes_to_cards_.28MRP.29_in_Celestial_Edition
A: Thanks for the catch.
One of the big advantages of a wiki is that everything has dates. Notice that the last time the MRP list was changed was August 2009. The FAQ is updated more often. In particular, the Justly Earned Victory entry was made in January 2010.
But I'll get the MRP thing removed, as it is out of date. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory and Yarijutsu", 13 Sep 2010 - Q: Does Justly Earned Victory negate bonus/penalties from tokens created by actions?
A: See: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_FAQ#Does_Justly ... bonuses.3F
"Q. Does Justly Earned Victory negate bonuses from tokens?
"A. Yes." And it goes on from there with more detail. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory and Yarijutsu", 12 Sep 2010 - Q: Can Yarijutsu be used by a bowed personality with an unbowed attachment?
A: Yes. No rule prevents using an action on a card attached to a bowed Personality. See: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Physically_mark ... nd_unbowed Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory and Yarijutsu", 12 Sep 2010 - Q: Isn't Last Stand an ongoing, not delayed effect?
A: Yes, but it doesn't matter. The main point is that the bonus hasn't applied. Zen Faulkes, "Last Stand + Justly Earned Victory", 2 Jul 2010 - Q: Would the answer be different if the battle progressed this way? Last Stand personality assigned to one battle. Non-Last Stand Personality assigned somewhere else (maybe with a Seiden Sanzo bonus or something). Either personality moves to the other's battle field. JEV is played. Non-Last Stand personality sent home.
A: No. The effect begins anew every time the condition is met (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Continuous_effects). Zen Faulkes, "Last Stand + Justly Earned Victory", 2 Jul 2010 - Q: If I have two units in battle, one of it with targeted with Last Stand and my oponent plays Justly Earned Victory (for Force negation Battle action). When my personality targeted with Last Stand will be alone (second personality will be moved home / killed).
Are my peronality has / receive +6 Force from Last Stand ?
Last Stand Open: Target your Hero: While he is the only Personality in an army, he has +6F.
Justly Earned Victory Battle: Target your Personality: Move a target enemy Personality with lower Force or with fewer attachments home. Battle: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties to cards at this battlefield from actions.
A: Justly Earned Victory will not negate delayed effects that haven't occurred yet.
In your scenario, your Hero would have +6F.
If you were to attack alone with your Hero and Justly Earned Victory were used, the force bonus would be negated for the rest of the turn (even if your Hero became alone at another battle that turn). Dan Jacobson, "Last Stand + Justly Earned Victory", 26 Jun 2010 - Q: Hi, after this ruling viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81436 I thought I understood how Justly earned victory and Shameful injury worked in regards to the negation of force penalties and bonuses from tokens created by actions until the end of turn.
Now having read the MRP artical on the front page of the L5R.com site, im totally confused and lost.
Please can someone tell me which is which? Because right now there are two different official rulings on this and its thrown my deck into chaos!
This is from the MRP link: "Justly Earned Victory and Shameful Injury no longer negate the Force bonuses and penalties from tokens created by actions. This is due to the way the new wording interacts with the Comprehensive Rules on negation effects."
This is the ruling: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81436
Justly Earned Victory Text Battle: Target your Personality: Move a target enemy Personality with lower Force or with fewer attachments home. Battle: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties to cards at this battlefield from actions.
Shameful Injury Text Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties a target Personality has received from actions. Until the turn ends, negate all new Force bonuses or penalties on him from actions.
So, what ruling is correct? Please make this the final answer too...
A: The MRP page is not yet comprehensive, and doesn't yet reflect the recent changes to the negation rules that make them more intuitive and consistent with other ongoing effects.
Justly Earned Victory and Shameful Injury negate force bonuses and penalties from tokens created by actions. Alex Jones, "JEV and shameful injury vs tokens.", 25 Feb 2010 - Q: I looked but I didn't see any posts that relate to this. Basically, can I use Justly Earned Victory to remove the Force penalty imposed by Nerve Strike?
Justly Earned Victory
Text Battle: Target your Personality: Move a target enemy Personality with lower Force or with fewer attachments home. Battle: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties to cards at this battlefield from actions.
Nerve Strike
Text Kiho Battle: Bow your target Monk: Target an enemy Personality with equal or lower Chi. Reduce his Force and the Force of each of his Followers to 0. Cards in that unit may not perform actions until this battle ends.
I think that it should negate the force penalty in that the second Battle action is a blanket effect that is not performed by any of my Personalities.
Can I get confirmation on this, please? If I'm wrong, could I get a link to the applicable ruling? Thanks for your help guys!
A: Cards aren't trying to trick you. You may indeed negate Nerve Strike's Force penalty with Justly Earned Victory. Dan Jacobson, "Justly Earned Victory vs. Nerve Strike", 30 Jan 2010 - Q: As a follow up to this thread on Strength of Bamboo and Fosuta: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81416&start=0
Does this mean that both justly earned victory and shameful injury will negate the effects of poison tokens until the end of the turn as strength of bamboo does to chi death by fosuta (with shameful offering continuing protection from new poison tokens)? Thanks in advance.
Justly Earned Victory: Battle: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties to cards at this battlefield from actions.
Shameful Injury: Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties a target Personality has received from actions. Until the turn ends, negate all new Force bonuses or penalties on him from actions.
A: Your assumption is correct. Since negation is a suppresion of effects, the force penalty effects of poison tokens will be suppressed until the end of the turn by Justly Earned Victory and Shameful Injury. Dan Jacobson, "poison tokens + justly earned victory/shameful injury", 27 Jan 2010 - Q: Example 2:
I use Demonic Possession on enemy Personality. Enemy personality loses gets -2F. Enemy uses Justly Earned Victory (Battle: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties to cards at this battlefield from actions.).
A: Here, the initial -2F is negated, but another -2F occurs after the resolution of Justly Earned Victory (and loses -2F for each subsequent action played that battle), as Justly Earned Victory is an instantaneous negation, and only negates force bonuses and penalties from action that existed prior to Justly Earned Victory being played. Dan Jacobson, "Demonic Possesion vs. Force Penalty Negation strategies", 28 Oct 2009 - Q: Regarding this ruling and to be clear.
Based on the CE Rules, will the tokens re-assert the penalties immediately? or are they zeroed out? Is this somehow different that with Shameful Injury?
From: "Continuous effects" Continuous effects are those found in non-triggered traits, as well as modifier effects that are not triggered (such as stat modifiers on Items or tokens). [...] If another effect reverses or modifies the continuous effect, the continuous effect does not automatically re-assert itself. Only if the continuous effect ends and begins again, or when the other effect ends, would the continuous effect begin.
From: "Duration and scope of negation effects" Every application of negation is instantaneous. [...] If a type of continuous occurrence is being negated (for example, Force bonuses from a non-triggered trait), then: All continuous occurrences of that type are negated while the negation is in effect, and reassert themselves afterwards. Basically, I want to be sure I understand the rule correctly, thanks.
Note: The last ruling (referenced above) was slightly confusing to me, not sure was the final ruling was.
A: The outcome has not changed with the Celestial Edition comprehensive rules coming online.
Justly Earned Victory specifies no duration, so it is an instantaneous effect. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Duratio ... on_effects: "A negation effect without an explicit duration is instantaneous, rather than lasting until the end of the turn (see below). This is an exception to the rule on duration of ongoing effects.
Tokens are continuous effects. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Continuous_effects: "Continuous effects are those found in non-triggered traits, as well as modifier effects that are not triggered (such as stat modifiers on Items or tokens)."
Finally, "An instantaneous negation effect will not suppress a continuous effect."
Justly Earned Victory does nothing to bonuses from tokens. Shameful Injury does nothing to bonuses on tokens already present. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory and Tokens", 4 Aug 2009 - Q: (W)ill Justly Earned Victory negate the effects of cards that award permanent force bonuses like Arrival of the Obsidian Champion and The Last One?
A: They're from actions. Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory and permanent force bonuses", 26 Jul 2009 - Q: (D)oes this mean the force bonus granted by said cards would NOT return at the end of the turn?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory and permanent force bonuses", 26 Jul 2009 - Q: Regarding this thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=77634&p=1018082&hilit=token#p1018082
Loïc did not rule differently on this, however there was an added portion which Zen did not add in the aforementioned thread.
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=77065&p=1012550&hilit=token#p1012550
From the above link:
The tokens themselves cannot be negated but the Force bonus they provide is negated by Shameful Injury's first effect, then it reasserts itself immediately because it is continuous and this negation is instantaneous. It is not negated by Shameful Injury's second effect because it is not a new bonus.
Loïc is not incorrect is he? Just want to shake any possible confusion from these two rulings.
A: Loïc's right. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory and Tokens", 21 Jul 2009 - Q: Does Justly Earned Victory (see below) remove tokens from cards(?)
A: No. The tokens stay, but their bonuses are zeroed out. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory and Tokens", 20 Jul 2009 - Q: Conversely, if Justly Earned Victory was played in that battle to negate the force bonuses/penalties, and then my opponent leaves the battlefield(getting rid of my bonuses) and comes back, is the force bonus still negated?
A: [Fixed.]
Yes.
http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Ongoing_effects: "An ongoing effect that is applied 'while' some condition is true ends when that condition is no longer true, and takes effect again if the condition becomes true within the stated duration of the effect."
That said, it's the same effect, so even though it takes effect again, it's still negated. Zen Faulkes, "Utaku Remi's Recon action", 30 Nov 2008 - Q: Can Justly Earned Victory negate Remi's recon ability at a battlefield?
A: Yes. The bonuses are from an action. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory & Utaku Remi", 28 Sep 2008 - Q: (I)s Remi's ability constantly applying to the battlefield?
A: You may have to be more specific here. Utaku Remi's effect is an ongoing effect, if that helps. See http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_of_effects: "Ongoing effects that affect all things of a certain kind (such as, “Battle: Your Samurai have +1F”) by default change the game state, and so affect all things in play of that kind throughout their duration, even ones not in play at the time the effect took place." Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory & Utaku Remi", 28 Sep 2008 - Q: Justly Earned Victory Battle: Negate all Force bonuses and penalties to cards at this battlefield from actions.
If my Personality has a "-X/-Y" token created by an action and I play Justly Earned Victory for its second action, which of the following happens?
1) My Personality's Force and Chi return to normal, as the Chi penalty is from the same effect as the Force penalty. 2) My Personality's Force returns to normal, as JEV only negates bonuses and penalties to Force. 3) My Personality's Force and Chi remain at their lowered state, as the penalty is from a token, not an action.
A: 1) No. While the Chi penalty is from the same effect, Justly negates a specific penalty, not the whole effect.
2) There you go. Spot on.
3) No, because http://rules.l5r.com/Non-card_physical_game_elements:"Effects of tokens come from the card or other source that created them."
Also, this was already pretty much answered here.
Please, do give the Search function a try before asking. Brook Cunningham, "Justly Earned Victory vs Tokens", 5 Jun 2008 - Q: regarding viewtopic.php?f=59&t=65732
would the change to the token be permanent or would the token return to -5F/-2C at the end of the turn
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_of_effects: "Ongoing effects last until the end of the turn in which they occur unless otherwise indicated." Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory and Earth Becomes Sky", 22 Feb 2008 - Q: Justly Earned Victory... negates the force penalty, or the whole action that caused it?
A: Actions are never negated; just individual effects are. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory and Earth Becomes Sky", 18 Feb 2008 - Q: How does Justly Earned Victory interact with tokens such as Earth Becomes Sky?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Non-card_physical_game_elements: "Effects of tokens come from the card or other source that created them."
If an action makes a token, the token's effects are action effects. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory and Earth Becomes Sky", 17 Feb 2008 - Q: If I'm using Kyuden Ashinagabachi, and have reduced my opponent's personalities' Force by making Ranged Attacks that didn't kill them, could he use Justly Earned Victory's second action to negate those penalties?
A: If those Ranged Attacks were the effect of actions (Limited, Open, Battle, Reaction), yes. Zen Faulkes, "Kyuden Ashinagabachi against Justly Earned Victory", 17 Feb 2008 - Q: Justly Earned Victory vs Iron Tetsubo: Which overrides which?
A: Mod reminder: When a card has mutiple actions, please specify which one you're talking about. Thanks!
Assuming we're talking about the second ability, "Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties to cards at this battlefield from actions" (emphasis added), I note that Iron Tetsubo is not an action. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory vs Iron Tetsubo", 2 Feb 2008 - Q: (I)f I play and action to give one of my personalities a permanent force boost through something like Vision of Pan'ku or Arrival of the Obsidian Champion, and it is negated by Justly Earned Victory. Would the force boost return once the turn ends or does it getting negated by Justly Earned Victory destroy the force bonus completely?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_o ... on_effects: "(A) non-continuous negation effect should be interpreted as an instantaneous negation that only ends existing ongoing effects, with no effect on continuous effects or new ongoing effects."
http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_of_effects: "Ongoing effects last until the end of the turn in which they occur unless otherwise indicated. For instance, 'permanent' or 'until' a certain game time are phrases that override the default 'end of turn' duration."
Permanent force bonuses are ongoing effects. They are negated. They don't come back. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory vs. Vision of Pan'ku", 18 Jan 2008 - Q: Battle: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties to cards at this battlefield from actions.
Open: Target another of your Personalities. Set his Force to Kazuki’s Force or his Chi to Kazuki’s Chi.
Any change in a stat’s value is considered a bonus (if increased) or penalty (if decreased), with the following exceptions:
A: As found in the Comprehensive Rules: Stats
Kazuki gives out either a Bonus or a Penalty when his ability actually changes a stat's value from one number to a different number. Either way Justly Earned Victory will stop that. Martin Lund, "Togashi Kazuki vs Justly Earned Victory", 4 Dec 2007 - Q: Battle: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties to cards at this battlefield from actions.
Tactical Battle: Any number of times per turn, discard a card and target one of your Tactician Personalities: Give him a Force bonus equal to the Focus Value of the discarded card.
A: Citation
Abilities that the Rulebook ascribes to the Player are just as much Actions as Abilities printed on cards. Martin Lund, "Justly Earned Victory and Tacticians", 2 Nov 2007 - Q: - During a battle, I play Justly Earned Victory to negate all force bonus and penalties from action. The penalty is on a token but there's a passage in the rulebook stating that: "Effects of tokens, such as bonuses or penalties to stats, come from the card that created the token.", in other words Shosuro Adeiko's reaction. Am I right, thinking the penalty would be negated ?
A: You are correct. The penalty is considered to have come from the source that created the token. Justly Earned Victory will Negate the penalty until its duration expires. Martin Lund, "Force penalty tokens", 2 Nov 2007 - Q: When a bonus, penalty, maximum, or minimum ends or is negated, the resulting stat change is not considered a penalty or bonus.
A: Not legal. Chris Fuchs, "Justly Earned Victory overide itself?", 22 Oct 2007
