Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Another Time 0G 0FV When you reveal this card as a Focus card for a duel, cancel the duel and discard all Focus cards without effect." [MRP, Gold Edition, 1 July 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 5
- Negates the effects of the duel. (Only actions can be canceled, not duels.) [ZF, 11 July 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 5
- Because it causes the duel to be negated as soon as it is revealed, it will nullify Kharmic Strike and prevent Poisoned Weapon or Judgement of Toshiken from being used. [Card text, DW, 11/8/96] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 5
- Will not stop Shosuro Hametsu's poison token from giving -2C. [DW, 8/2/96] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 6

Rules Q&A
- Q: Does Judgement of Toshiken cancel Another Time?
A: Hey, this one's in the Rules Archive. Which makes it a snap for me to cut and paste: "Cannot prevent Another Time from taking effect, because it resolves as soon as it is revealed."
I can see how you might have missed that, though, seeing as how it's buried in the middle of the rulings for "Judgment of Toshiken." ;)
(When your question is already answered in the rulebook or the Rules Archive, I'm allowed to rib you. Just a little.) Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 1 January 2003", 1 Jan 2003 - Q: No. Another Time shouldn't use the word "cancel" -- that's an improper use of the term. Another Time ends the duel immediately, without resolution.
I'm sorry Jeff, but this is a functional change of the card. It has canceled duels since its inception, and the wording of it has not changed more than cosmetically since it was printed, and "cancel" is on the Gold edition version.
Is this official Errata to Another Time???
A: Sure. Whatever makes you happiest.
And the function hasn't really changed. When Another Time was originally written, the terms "cancel", "negate", and "prevent" were all used rather interchangeably, and the exact meaning depended more on context than anything else. These words have far more rigid definitions these days, and Another Time -- yes, even the Gold Edition version -- uses one of them incorrectly. As Zen points out, it is not technically possible to "cancel" just the duel. Canceling is something that can only be done to entire actions and Events. Believe it or not, I'm actually confirming that it still works like it always did. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 November 2002", 23 Nov 2002 - Q: Recently, I played a game of l5r where my opponent used Hida Kosho's ability to challenge one of my personalities. I responded by accepting and focusing Another Time, thus canceling the duel. My opponent held that since the duel had been canceled, Kosho could perform the action again. I am not sure if this is correct; is canceling the duel synonomous with canceling the entire action?
A: No. Another Time shouldn't use the word "cancel" -- that's an improper use of the term. Another Time ends the duel immediately, without resolution. Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 November 2002", 21 Nov 2002 - Q: Can either of the following two actions be played with Iaijutsu Art?
Strike of Flowing Water Text:When you focus this card, double the Focus value of the next card you focus in this duel. Reaction: When one of your Personalities would focus, instead discard all cards focused by both Personalities'controllers for the duel and negate the discarded cards' effects.
Another Time Text:When you reveal this card as a Focus card for a duel, cancel the duel and discard all Focus cards without effect.
Iaijutsu Art Text:Limited: One of your Personalities issues an unrefusable challenge to a Personality with equal or higher Chi. Each Personality focuses exactly once, if possible, and Reactions taken "instead of focusing" cannot be taken. The winner's controller gains 4 Honor. Dishonor the loser.
A: The key point is whether you're actually focusing or taking a Reaction instead of focusing. The first is legal, even if extra effects are produced. The second is not.
Strike of Flowing Water may not be played for its Reaction. Both Strike of Flowing Water and Another Time may be focused, and both produce their appropriate extra effects -- though there will almost certainly be no second focus value for SoFW to double. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 November 2002", 13 Nov 2002 - Q: 3.) Another Time will not end a duel if used as a focus card AFTER Judgement of Toshiken has been played, correct?
A: Sent to the Rules Team. Jeff Alexander, "post for 30 April 2002", 1 May 2002 - Q: First, silly question: does Judgement of Toshiken trump (that is, render useless except for focus values, if used to focus): Another Time Kharmic Strike Concede Defeat (when played for its ability)
A: Judgement of Toshiken is played after focuses are revealed, by MRP. Another Time and Concede Defeat will still defeat it because they both resolve before then and both produce an immediate end to the duel. Judgement will re-override Kharmic's change to how the duel gets resolved. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 February 2002", 9 Feb 2002 - Q: The Claw is still usable. The Personality received a +0 bonus.
What happens if the card focused is Another Time, and the duel does not resolve. Does the bonus still occur?
A: Yes, since the focusing bonus begins immediately and Another Time does not end the duel until it's revealed. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 January 2002", 16 Jan 2002 - Q: When Another Time is revealed as a focus, does it's effects happen immediately or can I change it to a 0 focus with Judgement of Toshiken?
A: Immediately. Judgement of Toshiken is not an option. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 January 2002", 10 Jan 2002 - Q: [Another Time] is no longer a reaction. So its effects occur automatically once revealed. So the duel is canceled. This occurs before Poisoned Weapon.
Poisoned Weapon says play this card during a duel.
A: "during a duel after players reveal Focus cards (if any) and before the duel resolves". That's still after Another Time takes effect and calls the whole duel off. Nothing has changed timing-wise. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 October 2001", 3 Oct 2001 - Q: - does Poisoned Weapon and Turtle's Shell target something? And may Poisoned Weapon be used in a duel that someone has played Another Time?
A: Poisoned Weapon does not target anything because it says so. The Turtle's Shell targets the ranged attack. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 October 2001", 2 Oct 2001 - Q: Second question, not to have beating a dead horse. I tend to despise that sort of thing, in reference to Another Time, does it "Cancel the Duel" or "Negate the effects of the duel". Just like Flee, it says both.
A: It works the same as if it had just said "cancel". Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 20-21 February 2001", 24 Feb 2001
