- Erratum: Reads, “Kaiu Hisayuki 3F/2C –HR 6G 1PH Crab Clan • Samurai Increase by 1 all Force bonuses Hisayuki receives from abilities on cards that are not in this unit. These increases last as long as the bonuses do.” [MRP, Samurai Edition, 25 July 2007] Comprehensive Rules, Samurai Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, May 2009, p. 141
Rules Q&A
- Q: I have a shugenja with Suitengu's Surge attached, and I play Show of Good Faith to take control of, say, an opponent's Kaiu Hisayuki until the end of the turn.
Once Hisayuki is under my control, I target him with an action, and react by using Suitengu's Surge to send him out of play.
Seeing that Suitengu's Surge brings Hisayuki back into play before the beginning of the next turn (and therefore after Show of Good Faith's effect expires), under whose control does Hisayuki return, mine or my opponent's?
A: Show of Good Faith's duration granting you control has expired.
The prohibition against Attacking ended when Hisayuki left play.
Now for the fun part:
Returning the unit to play constitutes bringing the cards into play again. Since you just brought the Personality into play, you're the Personality's controller by default now, just as if you'd bought him from your Province.
Show of Good Faith + Suitengu's Surge = Permanent Theft Martin Lund, "Rules for 13 December 2004", 15 Dec 2004 - Q: Is the force bonus that comes from bowing Razor's Edge Dojo increased by one for Kaiu Hisayuki? It seems to me that it would, but I have heard before that your stronghold isn't technically considered a "card"
A: Strongholds are not cards. They can't ever be part of decks or affected by effects that address cards.
This is partly to keep Strongholds untouchable by otherwise universal effects that could apply to all cards.
This is also partly a legacy of the time when strongholds were not printed on card stock, but rather the back of smaller deck-boxes with only one stronghold each. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 April 2004", 27 Apr 2004 - Q: He also gets A extra 1 F if you are playing a RED Deck ,so Two of them Can Take a Province. The bonus does not come from a card in the unit, but the stronghold.Just thought I share this goodie(If no one has brought it up)
A: That doesn't work. Hisayuki only gets extra Force from "actions on cards that are not in this unit." [card text] Razor's Edge Dojo is a Stronghold. Strongholds are not cards. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 5 Feb. 2004", 6 Feb 2004 - Q: Wedge and Kaiu Hisayuki: Let's make this brief, is it force +1 doubled, or force doubled +1?????
A: The latter (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 8 November 2003", 8 Nov 2003 - Q: As someone who has played since '97 I tend to have a decent set of cards and while perusing through the rules I noticed the Ivory Edition has changed some of the statements on "Soul of" in the proxies and rules statements. First can I use proxies in tournaments when the tournament rules state things must be bugged, when the rulebook states older versions of a "soul of" card can be used as proxies if you inform your opponent of changes, if so do I need a copy of the card? I suspect yes I can use a Kaiu Hisayuki by bringing a copy of both Hisayuki and Saiyuki. The next question is does Silence count as Hida Saiyuk stilli? Kaiu Hisayuki was a Soul of Silence originally, but Samurai had no "Soul of X" Keyword so his MRP doesnt have the soul of Keyword and you didnt really have the issue of them counting as each other as proxies back then. Can you proxy a proxy with both at a tournament ie Silence for Hida since it only states you can proxy an older card and Technically Silence is the older version of Hisayuki? If not, does Silence no longer count as Kaiu Hisayuki for MRP reasons, can I then double up Hida Saiyuki and Silence in Legacy since Legacy is no longer listed on the list of "official" formats but states "Legacy is can be boiled down to play all cards as they are worded in the Oracle" (yes the typo is on the rules sheet). Just a headache and a curiosity going through my old hordes of cards trying to get ready for the new set and feeling a bit nostalgic.
A: In the future, if you could use line breaks to organize the questions it'd be really helpful to us! But I think I can tackle this anyway.
1. "Soul of" allows you to use the specific older version of the Personality in place of the most recent version, played with the text of the most recent version.
2. You do not need a copy of the new card, tho it can be helpful. With Oracle online, you can always get a judge to confirm exact text.
3. Silence and Hida Saiyuki have nothing to do with each other from an Ivory Edition perspective. There is no transitive property of Soul ofs.
4. As of his most recent printing, Kaiu Hisayuki is no longer the Soul of Silence, so Soul of is not longer a consideration in their interaction for deckbuilding.
5. Assuming Legacy is using the Soul of rules for deckbuilding, you can only have 3 of Kaiu Hisayuki + Hida Saiyuki, but you may have 3 copies of Silence in addition to that.
Please note that Big Deck ignores the Soul of rule, so you can run one of each version of a Soul chain. Jon Palmer, "Hida Saiyuki/Soul Of Kaiu Hisayuki/Soul of Silence", 22 Jan 2014 - Q: Kaiu Hisayuki + Tight Quarters: Can Hisayuki get +4 force because of his trait, or does the limitations of Tight Quarters also limit his own ability?
A: Point: Kaiu Hisayuki does not have an ability. Abilities are Limited, Open, Battle, Reaction.
Kaiu Hisayuki's trait doesn't give a separate bonus. It increases the one from Tight Quarters. It is thus limited, because Tight Quarters limits the size of the bonus. Zen Faulkes, "Kaiu Hisayuki and Tight Quarters", 4 May 2008 - Q: I was wondering with Triumph of Courage:Battle: Target an opposed Personality. After each time this turn a Battle action resolves (including this one), give him +1F
Does this give him +2 each time an action is taken?
A: Yes. Because,
1. Each of those bonuses is a seperate, indefinite conditional effect (defined here: http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Indefinite_conditional_effects).
2. They still all come "from" (per Hisayuki's text) the original action (sources of effects defined here: http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Source_of_effects). Brook Cunningham, "Kaiu Hisayuki + Triumph of Courage", 12 Apr 2008 - Q: Also With A legion of one Heroic Battle: Give one of your target Personalities +2F for each unit in the opposing army. If he is a Hero or Deathseeker before the next time this battle a card effect moves him, negate the movement.
Does he get +3 force for each? or do you just add the +1 after calculating the total +2 for each
A: That answer was contained in the link within the post you linked to, more directly here. Brook Cunningham, "Kaiu Hisayuki + Triumph of Courage", 12 Apr 2008 - Q: Barracks of the damned: if you make Kaiu Hisayuki Shadowlands, he only gets +1 force because Barracks is using a trait to give force, not ability?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Kaiu Hisayuki", 10 Apr 2008 - Q: How much force does Hisayuki gain from each Mastery token (from Trackless Road)?
A: +1F.
The token is from a trait, not an action. Zen Faulkes, "Kaiu Hisayuki + Trackless Road", 20 Jan 2008 - Q: Hey Zen you stated in this post viewtopic.php?f=59&t=60311#p772479 that kaiu hisayuki would tentatively gain +3 force for being opposed but you needed to do more research. just wondering if you have come to final ruling as to why it would be +3 and not +4 when opposed Hisayuki trait is "increase by 1 all Force bonuses Hisayuki receives from abilities on cards that are not in this unit. These increases last as long as the bonuses do." Shout of Defiance text is Target one of your Personalities: He gains +1F, an additional +1F if he is a Hero, and an additional +1F if he is opposed.
I read the Shout as having 3 separate Force bonuses do to the inclusion of the word additional. if the wording had been "a further +1" i could see it being all one bonus
[Mod edit: Formatting removed. Go easy on it. Thanks! -ZF]
A: Having been away from this for a while and having more familiarity with the Samurai Edition rules, I'm changing the old ruling. Each bonus is separate, and is increased by Hisayuki's trait separately. so +4F.
The old post has been updated accordingly. Zen Faulkes, "Kaiu Hisayuki + Shout of Defiance", 22 Sep 2007 - Q: Kaiu Hisayuki + Shout of Defiance: If opposed, would Hisayuki gain:4 force, 3 force, Something different.
A: Tentatively, 3F. Have to do some more checking though.
Additional: Each bonus is separate, and is increased by Hisayuki's trait separately. so +4F. Zen Faulkes, "Kaiu Hisayuki force bonuses", 9 Aug 2007 - Q: A Legion of One: Would Hisayuki gain: A) +3 force for each opposing unit B) +2 force for each unit then a final +1 force C) Something different
A: B. http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_F#For_each: "Proportional effects using the term “for each”, such as “Gain 1 Honor for each Samurai you control,” should be interpreted as a single effect rather than numerous separate effects." Zen Faulkes, "Kaiu Hisayuki force bonuses", 9 Aug 2007 - Q: Here my Questions:
1. If Kaiu Hisayuki has a Senpet Scimitar does this make the force bonuses from action increased by 2?
2. How about Kaiu Hisayuki on the effect of Heart of a Hero?
3. And what if i played 2 Heart of a Hero?
just want to ask if they are cumulative.
A: They are separate opperations.
If something tells you to add one, and something else tells you to add one, you've added a total of two.
If you have an Action that would be increased by both Hisayuki and something else, both increases happen. Two Heart of a Hero would work too. Each gives +3. That's a total of +6 in the end. Martin Lund, "Cumulative?", 10 Mar 2005
