Rules Q&A
- Q: I had some questions about the following cards and how they interact:
Peasant revolt
Kakita Atoshi
Chit'tith
Matsu Hyun
You feel it coming don't you? Can I unbow peeps with chit'tith or Hyun if a revolt resolved or when kept hold with atoshi?
A: No. Effects that prevent cards from straightening are more powerful than effects that straighten cards. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 December 2002", 10 Dec 2002 - Q: Kakita Atoshi. Why is it ruled that way? It seems to be in direct contradiction to what the card actually says.
A: Because the interaction with Diplomatic Apprentice was unexpected. Consider it an erratum if it makes you happy. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 7 July 2002", 8 Jul 2002 - Q: I was wondering about the interaction between Diplo apprentice and Kakita Atoshi.
If I have diplomatic apprentice attached to Atoshi and the Imperial favor can I bow the diplo apprentice to keep someone else bowed and then bow Atoshi to keep another personality bowed? On the same note, if I had 3 Atoshi's and 3 diplo apprentices could I keep 6 personalities bowed? I would assume that the diplo apprentices would have to unbow at the beginning of my turns.
A: By ruling, Atoshi's ability lasts while he's bowed, not until he straightens. Using a Diplomatic Apprentice with him is fruitless. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 January 2002", 22 Jan 2002 - Q: 3. If Kakita Atoshi has a Diplomatice Apprentice attached, I believe this is the correct outcome-
The Apprentice bows to lock the other unit down. However, his text does not say he can remain bowed, so he unbows at the beginning of the straighten phase, allowing said personality to straighten as normal (barring any retargetting by Atoshi/Apprentice).
A: The Apprentice does not copy the ability, it merely bows to pay the cost. The ability is still Atoshi's. The current ruling is that the effect ends immediately since Atoshi is unbowed. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 November 2001", 19 Nov 2001 - Q: I'm sorry if this has been questioned before and I don't think I'm the first person to see this, but I thought I'd run it past you anyway.
It appears to me that the combination of Kakita Atoshi and Diplomatic Apprentice could be trouble. As I understand it, When Atoshi bows to keep a personality bowed, the Diplomatic Apprentice could be bowed instead.
A: If this is done, the effect ends immediately since Atoshi is unbowed. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 21 September 2001", 24 Sep 2001 - Q: with all of the new courtier cards in APC, I noticed that Kakita Atoshi (soul of Kakita Torikago) has the Samurai trait, while the original one actually had a courtier trait. Clarification of this please.
A: Play him as written. Jeff Alexander, "replies for 14 September", 15 Sep 2001 - Q: Ok, here it goes:
Kakita Atoshi: Crane Clan Samurai Soul of Kakita Torikago Atoshi can remain bowed. Political Limited: Bow while you have the Imperial Favor. Select a bowed Personality. The target Personality may not straighten until after one of the following occurs: Atoshi straightens or is destroyed, or you lose the Imperial Favor.
Player 1 has an Atoshi and another personality in play, and has the favor. On my turn, I attacked with my personality, and now it has come home bowed from the battle. Once his turn starts, he uses Atoshi to keep my guy bowed. He then spends the favor on something (say, Sezaru) and then bows for it again. Now, since he *lost* the favor, which *sounds* like it meets the conditions on Atoshi, can my guy straighten at the beginning of my turn? Or is Atoshi able to keep my guy bowed, because he regained the favor?
A: As soon as either Atoshi straightens (or leaves play) or your opponent loses the Favor, Atoshi's effect ends. You may straighten your Personality on your turn in this example. What your opponent should have done was use the Favor, lobby to get it back, and THEN use Atoshi. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 8 September", 11 Sep 2001 - Q: Kakita Atoshi Political Limited: Bow while you have the Imperial Favour. Select a bowed Personality. The target Personality may not straighten until after one of the following occurs: Atoshi straightens or is destroyed, or you lose the Imperial Favour.
So when do they straighten? Is it at their next straighten phase, or immediately after requirements are met.
A: The cards are not trying to fool you, grasshopper. There's no indication that the personality straightens immediately when one of Atoshi's conditions ends, so they don't. They're just allowed to straighten normally again. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 14th", 14 Aug 2001 - Q: While Kakita Torikago was a Crane Clan Courtier, His "Soul of" personality is a samurai. I know that this is not a MRP, and that Torikago is still a courtier, but is this normal and intended ?
A: The card is correct as printed.

Political Limited: Bow while you have the Imperial Favor. Select a bowed Personality. The target Personality may not straighten until after one of the following occurs: Atoshi straightens or is destroyed, or you lose the Imperial Favor.
The Emperor's Left Hand: Political Reaction: Cancel any one political action being taken by the player with the highest family honor.
Let's say Atoshi has kept Matsu Nimuro bowed for the last three turns. Lion pulls the E's LH. Can he pay the 1G on Crane's turn to cancel the action & unbow Nimuro on the following turn?
A: No. The action is only 'used' when Atoshi bows to create the effect. After that, it's just an effect with a non-time duration. If, however, Atoshi straightened (or you lost the Favor) and then you tried to use it again, the Left Hand would be legal for play. It can't be used to end the action in the middle of its duration, though. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 25th", 25 Jul 2001
