Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Apprentice 0F/+1*C 0HR 0G -PH 2FV Apprentice adds an additional two to the Chi of this Shugenja for the purposes of bringing spells into play or when bowing to use a spell or innate ability." [MRP, Obsidian Edition] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 42
- Erratum: Added: additional +2C also applies when bringing spells into play and when using innate abilities. Text Change & Errata List, February 15, 2000, p. 9
- Q: If I bow several shugenja to cast a Ritual, are they all producing spell effects, or just the primary shugenja? A: Just the primary one. However, they all gain any benefits they'd normally get when casting spells, such as gaining extra Chi from an Apprentice and not needing to bow during a Celestial Alignment. The Imperial Herald, Vol. 1, Issue 4, p. 8
Rules Q&A
- Q: I'm kinda confused on what the Apprentice can or can't do.
A: The Apprentice bows to pay a cost that his Personality would normally bow to pay for. He doesn't replace the Personality or any of his stats or traits. Basically, he just changes one element of the cost. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 12 March 2004", 13 Mar 2004 - Q: I was wondering about the interaction between Diplo apprentice and Kakita Atoshi.
If I have diplomatic apprentice attached to Atoshi and the Imperial favor can I bow the diplo apprentice to keep someone else bowed and then bow Atoshi to keep another personality bowed? On the same note, if I had 3 Atoshi's and 3 diplo apprentices could I keep 6 personalities bowed? I would assume that the diplo apprentices would have to unbow at the beginning of my turns.
A: By ruling, Atoshi's ability lasts while he's bowed, not until he straightens. Using a Diplomatic Apprentice with him is fruitless. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 January 2002", 22 Jan 2002 - Q: 3. If Kakita Atoshi has a Diplomatice Apprentice attached, I believe this is the correct outcome-
The Apprentice bows to lock the other unit down. However, his text does not say he can remain bowed, so he unbows at the beginning of the straighten phase, allowing said personality to straighten as normal (barring any retargetting by Atoshi/Apprentice).
A: The Apprentice does not copy the ability, it merely bows to pay the cost. The ability is still Atoshi's. The current ruling is that the effect ends immediately since Atoshi is unbowed. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 November 2001", 19 Nov 2001
