Rules Q&A
- Q: Is shrine of duty able to be canceled by Kakita Munemori? I believe that the shrine satisfies the third rule for having a personality (or group of personalities) perform an action. Since it is a political action, that would mean that Munemori's ability would indeed be able to cancel the action.
A: No. Shrine of Duty does NOT satisfy the third rule for having a personality perform an action.
Those Personalities are neither Targeted by Shrine of Duty, nor are do they participate in paying any costs. They don't have to be alive when you use Shrine of Duty or anything like that. The Shrine's ability just has a very specific play condition / timing window. Not just any old End Phase will do. It has to be one of your end Phases that comes in a turn where you assigned at least 2 Samurai or Bushi to attack. Martin Lund, "Rules for 22 April 2004", 25 Apr 2004 - Q: 4) Honorable Seppuku and Kakita Munemori
Kakita Munemori: Political Reaction: Bow Munemori to cancel a Political action performed by a non-Courtier Personality.
Honorable Seppuku: Political Reaction: Play this card after one of your samurai creates, or is targeted by, or is affected by an effect that dishonors him or her or causes you to lose Honor.
Performing actions, H&E Rulessheet: Actions which involve one or more Personalities or Followers in their cost, such as requiring them to bow or become dishonored, or which require targeting your own Personalities or Followers who meet certain conditions, such as being a Shugenja or a Tactician or having a Chi above 2, are performed by those cards.
Can Munemori cancel Honorable Seppuku?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 27-28 May 2003", 29 May 2003 - Q: Are spells performed by the shugenja they are attached to and can Kakita Munemori cancel Hanabi?
A: Yes [H&E rulesheet], and yes (unless the caster is both Shugenja and Courtier). Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 May 2003", 21 May 2003 - Q: Does Kakita Munemori cancel any politacal action, or just personalities taking political actions who are not Courtier?
A: "Bow Munemori to cancel a Political action performed by a non-Courtier Personality." [card text] That only cancels actions performed by Personalities who lack the Courtier trait. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 May 2003", 21 May 2003 - Q: Say hypothetically my opponent bows Kakita Munemori to cancel one of my political actions taken by one of my personalities.
I have one of my samurai challenge Munemori with Enough Talk!. Munemori focuses. I strike and play Poisoned Weapons. Munemori wins the duel (so the cancellation goes through) but dies immediately after the duel due to Poisoned Weapons.
Do I have an opportunity to play a second Enough Talk! to challenge Munemori and attempt to cancel his political action (before Munemori dies)? Is is still a legal play, since a personality is still taking a political action (although the personality is dead) which is the trigger for Enough Talk!?
A: Munemori dies too soon for you to React with another Enough Talk! He is dead and cannot be challenged. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 April 2003", 29 Apr 2003 - Q: Is a personality targeted with Honorable Sepukku considered to be performing it (and cancellable with Kakita Munemori)?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 April 2003", 29 Apr 2003 - Q: One quick question: Is using the favor political even if the card using it doesn't say so?
A: GE rulebook, page 4:
] "For cards printed prior to the Gold Edition set, an action ] that changes a Family Honor loss or gain in any way, including ] canceling, preventing, or redirecting it, is Political. This ] does not apply to actions that cancel or negate other actions ] or Events completely. (Creating a loss or gain is not ] necessarily Political, nor is an action Political just because ] it interacts with the Imperial Favor.) For cards printed ] starting with the Gold Edition set, Political actions are only ] those that have the Political trait."
And from the upcoming Heaven & Earth rulesheet:
] In addition to modifying a loss or gain of Family Honor, an ] action on a card printed prior to Gold Edition is Political if ] it requires discarding the Imperial Favor as a cost of taking ] the action. Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 March 2003", 26 Mar 2003 - Q: I bring Kakita Munemori into play, one of my opponents shugenja cast The Wind´s Truth to get the two honor from munemori, can I bow the Munemori I just bring into play to cancell that Wind´s Truth?
A: No. The honor gain happens before Munemori enters play. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 March 2003", 18 Mar 2003 - Q: My opponent uses scorpion disctractor to cancel my use of the imperial favor, can I bow Kakita Munemori to cancel the action if the person bowed was not a courtier?
A: Yes. The Personality bowing to pay for the Distractor is performing that action, according to performing definition #3. Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 January 2003", 25 Jan 2003
