Rules Q&A
- Q: Hello,
I'm fairly new at l5r and was hoping you could clarify "Iaijustu battle:" for me. Couldn't really find much on the internet about it or in forums related to the rulings. Maybe i'm not wording it right, so I thought it would be worth while just to ask.
1. When I declare an "Iaijustu battle:" action off a personality such as: Kakita Sadaka, Iaijustu battle: bow sadaka unless she won a duel this turn: move target enemy attacking personality with equal or lower chi home
Is it considered just a normal battle action or does the word "iaijustu" with "battle" allow me to challenge another personality?
The reason i'm confused is because there are personalities like: kakita Noritoshi, Iaijustu battle: noritoshi challenges a target enemy personality. destroy the duel's loser.
I don't see the point of the "iaijustu battle:" text if it clearly states when i'm challenging.
2. There is a card called Impromptu duel. Which lets me challenge as a limited action. I thought I needed to have an opposing personality in the attack phase to declare duels.
3. If i'm bowed during the duel, does the duel end with no results?
I appreciate your time and help, thanks a bunch.
A: 1. "Iaijutsu" when attached to an ability is merely adding an additional trait to the ability itself. It does nothing by itself but may trigger additional cards (for instance, the card Half-Breath Strike requires that you show an Iaijutsu card in your hand)
2. In order to declare a duel during a battle, yes, the Personalities must be opposing each other. However, that's due to a restriction on Battle actions - for actions in other phases, the restriction does not exist.
3. No, becoming bowed during the duel has no effect on the duel's resolution or results. Jon Palmer, "Dueling questions", 18 Dec 2011
