Rules Q&A
- Q: Hello.
My opponent, a hated Kalani's Landing, has Kanaye out and he is facing Nikaru in a battle.
Opponent says that he is going to use Kanaye's ability to target my Nikaru who has no attachments. He has 9 gold, but he pauses for a second, insisting that I have to say if I use Halls of the Forgotten reaction first. So, seeing Kanaye's text (which has a 'may pay gold' clause after targeting), I am a bit puzzled on what's should be the right play:
a) Kanaye targets Nikaru and pays 9g trying to kill him. I use Halls to delay the destruction. b) Kanaye targets Nikaru. I use Halls to delay whatever Kanaye does. Kanaye skips paying the gold, so I finally delay a simple bowing?
Reference: Yoritomo Kanaye-> Battle: Target an enemy card without attachments, and you may pay Gold equal to its Gold Cost: Bow it. If you paid the Gold, destroy it.
Halls of the Forgotten-> Reaction: After another player's Battle action targets your Berserker: Delay its effects on him until after this battle ends.
Thank you!
A: Scenario b is correct.
Halls of the Forgotten reacts immediately after your Berserker is targeted, which occurs before Kanaye's player pays any costs of the ability, mandatory or optional. Brook Cunningham, "Yoritomo Kanaye vs Halls of the Forgotten", 30 Aug 2012 - Q: So, I have a two questions, the second of which is reliant on the answer to the first.
First: Can Luxurious Silk's Reaction be used to pay for Shinden Shorai's Limited action?
Second: Can Kalani's Landing be used to pay for Low Market's action?
Thank you!
A: The answer to both questions is "no".
The actions themselves have no cost at all; if they did, it would be between their first and second colons. The costs you will be paying are of/for the Personality and attachment themselves, respectively, and are NOT costs OF the action. So, that excludes Luxurious Silk and Kalani's Landing in your examples, due to the limitations on their Gold production. Brook Cunningham, "Two-Part Gold Production Trickery", 14 Jun 2012 - Q: Hi,
Following that thread : viewtopic.php?f=59&t=97699#p1289948
I do not understand why the good faith rules can be used here? Shouldn't the opponent have to check how many card Yoritomo Singh's controler has in hand? I mean, he could have up to 3 copies of "One koku", couldn't he?
Card text : One Koku - Strategy Reaction: When paying a Gold cost: Produce one Gold.
Regards, Rémi.
A: The Good Faith Rule states: When an action is announced, the player must be able to target all required targets, meet all conditions of the action, and pay all mandatory costs, to the best of his or her knowledge.
The bolded emphasis is mine.
Knowing you have up to three One Koku in your hand when announcing Singh's ability falls under the best of your knowledge, since the contents of your hand is known to you, and the number of cards in your hand is game knowledge all players have access to. Ben Higgins, "Kalani's Landing vs. Good Faith Rule", 2 May 2012 - Q: Hi,
There is a debate among players from Paris... Can Kalani's Landing pay gold for Broken Alliance ability that destroys an attachment?
Card's texts: Bropken alliance : Battle/Open: Target an attachment and pay Gold equal to its Gold Cost minus two: Destroy it.
Kalani's landing : This card will not produce Gold when paying for an attachment.
Thanks in advance, Regards, Rémi.
A: Yes. Paying the cost to destroy the attachment via Broken Alliance is not paying "for" an attachment. Jon Palmer, "Broken alliance VS Kalani's Landing", 27 Mar 2012 - Q: I have some questions about ambush. 1. Can they react with the Recruitment Officer holding to create a 2f2c ronin samurai? 2. Is it still considered my action phase for the purpose of playing rings that require actions in the same phase? 3. Does the mantis Kalani's Landing stronghold straighten when i play ambush?
Edited some acronyms to the complete card names, to aide future searching. -Ryushi
A: 1) Yes. Creating a Personality (and bringing him in to play) is not considered movement.
2) Yes. Nothing about Ambush ends or suspends the current phase.
3) No. Ambush does not create an Attack Phase, only a battlefield. Ben Higgins, "Ambush", 2 Mar 2012 - Q: I am playing Kalani's Landing, my only available gold is Kalani's Landing which straightened on my opponent's turn. My opponent attacks me and I defend with two personalities. My opponent announces a kill action and I reduce the cost of my 8G personality by 2 with the reaction on Kalani's Landing. My opponent targets this personality with his kill action. I then play At Any Cost targeting the same personality and pay 4G with Kalani's Landing to bring the dead personality back into play with the 2G reduction from Kalani's Landing and the 2G in clan reduction. Is this a legal play?
A: Yes, perfectly legal.
The card was in play when you targeted it with Kalani's Landing's Reaction, and all your statements about durations are correct. Brook Cunningham, "Kalani's Landing + At Any Cost", 22 Feb 2012 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=95730
Has this post been answered somewhere else?(i see no reply) i have another scenario.
If my personality with attached legion of one, is targeted by an enemy battle action that is performed by an enemy personality with 9gc, then i react with Kalani's Landing:
1) will the action fail, resulting in the next action being mine? 1a)will the costs of the action still need to be paid?
2)will the action fail, resulting in that player to choose another legal target? 2a)what if there are no other legal targets? 2b)will the costs of the action still need to be paid?
3)will the enemy battle action ignore the trait on legion of one?
A: I assume you mean Legion of Pain? (A) Legion of One is a strategy.
Per the rules on abilities and actions, your Personality with Legion of Pain cannot be chosen as a target in this scenario. However, if another legal target is present they can be chosen instead. Costs need not be paid if another target cannot be chosen. Jon Palmer, "Legion of pain + Kalani's landing timing", 9 Feb 2012 - Q: Consideration: Open: Choose your performing unbowed Tactician and another of your target Personalities: Give the Personality +3F. After the next time this turn another player's action targets him, negate its effects.
Kalani's Landing: Reaction: After an action is announced, target a card (in play): Give it -2 Gold Cost
Something that came up last night in playtest, and I just wanted to confirm we have ruled it correctly. My opponent uses Consideration to target one of his personalities. I declare an action (in this case it was an action to bow him) and then react with Kalani's landing to give him -2Gold cost. The Consideration negates the effect of the gold cost reduction but that effectively allows my bowing action to take effect without any issues.
Our ruling was that as Kalani's landing reacts to the announcement of the action, before choosing targets, then the effect of Kalani's would be the one that gets negated as it was the next action targeting that personality.
Are we correct?
A: Looks correct. Alex Jones, "Consideration and Kalani's Landing", 9 Feb 2012
