Rules Q&A
- Q: What about Kaneka? If my opponent wants to use Kaneka's ability to bow one of my units, but all of my units in the battle have at least one bowed card in them, would that mean there are no legal targets for Kaneka to choose from?
A: That's an effect, not a cost. You can bow a unit with bowed cards with an effect. It attempts to bow every card in the unit. It fails to bow any card that is already bowed. Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 December 2004", 15 Dec 2004 - Q: Matsu's Rage Tactical Battle : Target a Personality in his controller's home. Move him into the current defending army. If he moved, straighten his unit. Kaneka
Tactical Battle: Bow an opposing unit. That unit's controller may instead bow at least two other units whose combined total Force exceeds Kaneka's Chi.
a.. If a player chooses to bow two units when his second ability is used, the other units to be bowed instead must be in the same army as the targeted unit. [Erratum, JA, 11 May 2004]
And here is the combo : I attack, say, with kaneka. Kaneka is my Attacking army. I have a Koto at home.
The defender is a military deck (if he won't, it would be no fun) and assigns a lot of personality to defend.
I won't focus on the defender's actions.
My first action : I use Kaneka to perform a Matsu's Rage on my own Koto, so that he moves to the opposing army.
A: Okay. Koto won't move though. Units you control can't enter an army unless you are its leader or a confirmed ally of its leader. And that pretty much ruins the rest of your clever combo. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 November 2004", 5 Nov 2004 - Q: Now a different example, but in the same way. My opponent has a Toshiji and Kaneka, with a Turn of Fortune in hand. I play Honor’s Cost to Toshiji
3.- Could my opponent redirect the Honor’s Cost to Kaneka playing Turn of Fortune?
A: Yes. Kaneka is a legal target. Martin Lund, "Rules for 19 October 2004", 24 Oct 2004 - Q: 4.- If he can redirect it to Kaneka, what is the printed Gold cost of the Honor’s Cost?
C) Seven Gold due to 4Chi + 3PH from Toshiji D) Eight Gold due to 6Chi + 2PH from Kaneka
A: Kaneka is the target. The gold cost is 8. Martin Lund, "Rules for 19 October 2004", 24 Oct 2004 - Q: 5.- After paying the Gold cost, what happens to Kaneka? E) Honor’s Cost effects bows Kaneka F) Nothing. Kaneka remains unbowed.
A: Honor's Cost does exactly what it says it does - it bows Kaneka (the target). Martin Lund, "Rules for 19 October 2004", 24 Oct 2004 - Q: If Kaneka somehow loses the Tactician trait (through, say, Bayushi Aotara), can he still perform Tactical actions?
A: No. Martin Lund, "Rules for 23 May 2004", 26 May 2004 - Q: Here are some question that I would like some answers to that came up over the past week or so during some games.
1. If I have a Satsu out who's bowed..and since the card reads "need not bow to cast Kihos" can he still sling kihos like Chasing Osano Wo? If I remember correct cards that are bowed..their abilities are "turned off"..like even though the new Kaneka card doesn't have to bow to use his abilities..if he's bowed he cant use his abilities right?
A: You can't use an Action on a card or stronghold which is bowed. That means Limited, Battle, Open, or Reactions. That does not do anything to Traits. Satsu has a Trait that lets him cast without bowing. It is always "on."
And as for casting ...
"Kiho can be cast by bowed Personalities if the kiho or Personality does not require bowing (e.g., Togashi Satsu, Experienced). [JA, 15 September 2003]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Kiho") Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 April 2004", 4 Apr 2004 - Q: Can I use Bane of the Bastard to target any number of face-up regions in an opposing player's provinces (providing he's using Kaneka as his Wind) to put them at the bottom of his Dynasty deck? Also, does it matter if the regions are attached or not when using this action?
A: The second question is more important than the latter, because that answer is, "Yes." Bane of the Bastard looks for cards in Provinces, not attached to Provinces. Regions in play won't be affected. Zen Faulkes, "Bane of the Bastard vs Face-up Regions", 14 Mar 2005 - Q: Is the standerd action of discarding to give a tactical force bonus considered a prited action.
A: Yes. It is printed once in the Rulebook. For the game's purposes, there is only one Rulebook. Producing multiple physical copies of that document does not count as multiple printed instances of the ability. Martin Lund, "Kaneka, and overlaying 2 Q's", 12 Mar 2005 - Q: Can you discard your whole hand to kaneka?
A: Well, if your whole hand was 1 card, I suppose so. You can only pitch to the Standard Tactical Action in the Rulebook to boost Kaneka once per battle, however. Martin Lund, "Kaneka, and overlaying 2 Q's", 12 Mar 2005 - Q: 2. I have kakita noritashi and noritashi xp in my provences. Can i play Noritashi, then overlay the xp on the same turn?
A: Sure. There are no rules preventing this. Play one card. Play the other card. No tricks. Martin Lund, "Kaneka, and overlaying 2 Q's", 12 Mar 2005 - Q: 2nd turn noritashi xp? Honor requirement is waved when overlaying right?
A: Yes sir. Honor Requirement entering-play rules are a "Restriction," according to the Diamond Edition Glossary, so Overalying ignores them.
One would note, however, that Kakita Noritoshi nonexperienced is neither Diamond nor Lotus bugged, and in Open Format there are far more daunting things that can happen in the 2nd turn's Dynasty Phase. Martin Lund, "Kaneka, and overlaying 2 Q's", 12 Mar 2005 - Q: Is this a legal sequence of events:
Player A bows his stronghold to negate one of his units from going home with Kaneka as a wind
Player B plays FOYK
Player A plays FOYK targeting the first FOYK
Player B plays Misdirection redirecting Player A's FOYK to his own reaction to prevent his unit from going home.
If this isnt legal can Player B play Misdirection redirecting Player A's FOYK to Player B's Misdirection.
A: You can't redirect Fall on Your Knees because it doesn't target.
Due to its timing trigger, there is never more than one Reaction it can legally be played against. It can only be played against the Reaction that the current Timing Window is associated with. Reaction aren't like "Instants" in Magic. They can only be played at their legal trigger.
The sequence would work like this:
Send Home Effect
--> Reactions to Send Home Effect (and only that) must be played now
--> Reaction Played: Righ Hand
----> Reactions to Right Hand (and only that) must be played now
----> Reaction Played: Fall on Your Knees #1
------> Reactions to Fall on Your Knees #1 (and only that) must be played now
------> Reaction Played: Fall on Your Knees #2
--------> Reactions to Fall on Your Knees #2 (and only that) must be played now
--------> All players pass
------> Fall on Your Knees #2 resolves, canceling Fall on Your Knees #1, which can no longer be responded to.
----> Reactions to Right Hand (and only that) must be played now
----> All players pass
--> Right Hand resolves, Negating Send Home Effect.
No effects. Timing Windows closes. Next opportunity to take a Battle or Open Action. Martin Lund, "Fall On Your Knees/Misdirection", 5 Mar 2005
