Rules Q&A
- Q: From a friend.. Does Friendly Traveller Village Produce 4 Gold when paying for Katsu, Hitaki, Chuniko (The "Shadowlands Shugenja"). I ask because Shadowlands is not a faction, and they have no other Faction Traits on them.
A: AND Jeff Alexander, "post for 27-28 May 2003", 29 May 2003 - Q: Katsu and all shadowlands personalities in B.B. does'n have the unaligned trait. Does this means that you build the shadowlands clan trait?? How can this be useful for shadowlands or other clan players (Having the unaligned trait or not, having the shadowlands clan trait or not)???????????
A: We are trying to use the term "Unaligned" intuitively these days, reserving it for Personalities who are truly not affiliated with any of the game's recognized Factions. Yes, "Shadowlands" is not treated as a faction trait, but back at the intuitive level, that's splitting hairs. Players (understandibly) THINK of Shadowlands Personalities as belonging to that Faction, so its presence will also make a card ineligible for the Unaligned trait. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 August 2002", 11 Sep 2002 - Q: The Unaligned trait seems to be a fleeting thing in L5R -- not given as often as one would think, given to those you wouldn't expect, then taken away soon after. My friends and I looked in vain for useful ronin without clan alignments during the first arc (we'd given up by the second) -- they kept getting sucked up into Toturi's Army and YA.
Now we seem to have cut out the middle-man entirely. Why, Powers That Be, isn't the Unaligned trait on a few more Personalities in BB? Specifically, I ask because it is lacking on Garen and Katsu, prime candidates for it. If you wanted it there and this was a mistake, fine. But if there is a thematic reason, please clue us in, because it is utterly opaque.
A: We're deliberately using the "Unaligned" trait in a more intuitive manner now, typically only assigning it to Personalities who are affiliated with none of the Factions in the rulebook. That includes the Shadowlands, because, special affiliation rules notwithstanding, a Personailty with that trait is still conceptually "working for them" rather than being detached from every major group in the game.
