While Ki-Rin is unbowed and honorable, Personalities with a Personal Honor of zero, four, or five cannot assign or move into armies attacking your Provinces." Rules Q&A
- Q: If Samurai's Anger is played against someone who has Ki-Rin shrine in play, does he have to remove the abilities on the card since his chi cannot be lowered?
A: Well, assuming the Personal Honor / Chi statistics are set so that Ki-Rin's Shrine would make it impossible to lower the courtier's chi by 2, yes, you'd be forced to choose the other option - provide the Courtier had any abilities to begin with. When forced to choose between two options by another player's card effect, you can not choose an option where some or all of the effects will fail over an option where all its effects work. (Accumulated Rulings, "Decisions") Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 August 2004", 10 Aug 2004 - Q: ie: if I have Ki-Rin in play, peeps with 0,4,5 personal honor cannot be in the battle.
A: The Ki-Rin says, "While Ki-Rin is unbowed and honorable, Personalities with a Personal Honor of zero, four, or five cannot assign or move into armies attacking your Provinces."
Essence of Gaki-do neither moves nor assigns any Personalities. It instead Creates them in the Battle, right on the spot. Consequently, the Ki-Rin won't get in Essence of Gaki-do's way. Martin Lund, "Rules for 26 June 2004", 29 Jun 2004 - Q: If I have the Maw and Ki-Rin Shrine (non-XP) in play, and the Maw gets Force of Will'd, is he dead for 0 Chi, or 7 Chi and 7 PH?
A: Set Chi to old PH and PH to old Chi. Apply minimums (minimum Chi is now 7 of Force of Will was cast by someone else). The Maw lives at 7 Chi. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 March 2004", 26 Mar 2004 - Q: So the crazy Russian in our group asked me this...
I'm playing with Ki-Rin. My opponent Kolat Master's the Ki-Rin. My opponent then attacks me with an Ogre Bushi and the Ki-Rin. I play Loyalty Renewed on the Ki-Rin. What happens to the Ogre Bushi?
A: Nothing. By extension of this ruling:
Ki-Rin * Only prevents assigning and moving into Provinces. Personalities dishonored during the battle do not leave. [JA, 11 September 2001]
The Ogre stays in the battle, regardless of whether or not control of the Ki-Rin changes. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for July 15th, 2003", 15 Jul 2003 - Q: [Ki-Rin] says nothing about being in play...
A: All effects are limited to cards in play (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 25) unless they otherwise say so (e.g., they refer to cards someone "owns"). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 April 2003", 12 Apr 2003 - Q: [H]aving a Ki-Rin in my dynasty deck, not even exposed or unexposed in any of my provinces, what keeps opposing personalities that have a personal honor of 0, 4, or 5 ever attacking my provinces until for some reason the Ki-Rin would be discarded or removed from play in some fashion?
A: The Gold Edition rules, page 25. "Cards in decks, in Provinces... do not affect play." Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 April 2003", 12 Apr 2003 - Q: From the FAQ: Q: So that means I won’t gain extra honor for buying a Personality at full price while I have the Experienced 2 Bayushi Yojiro or the Experienced Ki-Rin’s Shrine? But everyone I know says I do! A: For a while, the rule was that you did, but in Broken Blades the ruleschanged slightly. Now, when you bring a Personality into play for full price during your Dynasty Phase, you gain Honor based on her Personal Honor just before she enters play, so effects that boost her Personal Honor her while she’s in play don’t have a chance to raise it first. Note that Personalities that enter play dishonored will still give you a 0-point Honor gain if brought into play at full price, which will not restore them to Honorable status.
Question: If I play ‘Company you Keep’ on a dishonored personality and the opposing player pays full price on a a greater than 0 PH personality entering play, and since the new personality is entering with a 0 point honor gain, can I use Doji Nagori to increase the honor gain from 0 to 1.
A: Yes. Paying full price for an aligned Personality with 0 Personal Honor generates a 0-point honor gain, which can be modified by cards such as Nagori. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 November 2002", 19 Nov 2002 - Q: 4 - If I attach a Yoshi's fan to a dishonored personality, does the Personal Honnor is zeor or 1? I should say 0 but want to be sure. Same question about Bayushi Yojiro XP2 and Ki Rin Shrine XP.
A: 0 and 0. See #3. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 October 2002", 30 Oct 2002 - Q: Um - just got done looking at the list of rulings on deathseeker - Ki-Rin Shrine EXP and Bayushi Yojiro Exp 2 (or 3 whichever it is) NO LONGER ADD HONOR WHEN BUYING PEEP IN FOR FULL? When did this happen?
A: When Broken Blades officially went on sale. The rulesheet in that set changed the timing of how honor is gained. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 October 2002", 18 Oct 2002 - Q: 3) Does the Ki-Rin Shrineís Experienced trait of giving all you your Dragon Clan Personalities gaining +1 Personal Honor, allow you to gain an extra 1 honor by bringing them into play for full cost during your dynasty phase if you are a Dragon player?
A: See #2. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 October 2002", 17 Oct 2002 - Q: Other than errata, no major gameplay-affecting changes from the Broken Blades rulebook -- if any -- will be in effect at GenCon. We are not going to change the rules environment at such a critical time.
And this is: "Because....."?
Because it may change the environement? Because it may give some Clans/Players advantages/disadvantages? Because it wouldn't be "fair"?
A: Take those quotation marks off the word "fair". They don't belong. It absolutely would NOT be fair to change the rules days, if not hours, before the world championships, especially if it influenced deck construction in a biased fashion across the factions. We're not going to do it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 July 2002", 26 Jul 2002 - Q: Just a quick question; this issue arose yesterday when we were honing our decks for the upcoming local SotLion tourney.
When Holdings are bought from Provinces, they come into play bowed. Does this mean that the effects of certain Holding (like the Chi boost of the Fortress of the Dragonfly, and the Force/Chi/Honour boost of the Ki-Rin Shrine Exp) do not take effect until the Holding becomes unbowed at the start of the player's next turn?
A: "Bowing does not turn off continuous effects of a card, such as traits, Force and Chi bonuses, or effects that are not actions." [DA rulebook p. 24] Jeff Alexander, "post for 26 April 2002", 27 Apr 2002 - Q: In other words, can I buy my Ki-Rin Shrine, and then immediately start reaping the extra Honour from the Dragon Personalities that I bring into play later during that same Dynasty phase?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 26 April 2002", 27 Apr 2002 - Q: I have a little question regarding the art on Thunder Of The Earth.
Am I mistaken, or is that the Ki-Rin Shrine being lava geysered. You know, the Ki-Rin Shrine the Dragon took from the Phoenix.
A: I doubt it. All those torii arches look alike. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 November 2001", 22 Nov 2001 - Q: Ki-Rin (gold edition) "While the Ki-Rin is unbowed and Honorable, Personalities with 0,4, or 5 = Personal Honor cannot be in armies attacking your Provinces."
My question: what happens if one of the attacker's Personalities has = Frenzy (or some other effect that would dishonor them or raise or lower = their PH to 0, 4, or 5) played on them? They are already present, so is = the action that would cause the conflict illegal? Is the Personality = sent home? Or do they stay in the current battle until resolution, = unable to move to a different battle, and are prevented from attacking = at a later time until the situation changes?
A: Treat the Ki-Rin as saying "cannot assign or move into". Jeff Alexander, "replies to 7 September", 11 Sep 2001 - Q: Does having base personal honer of 6 override the rulebook maximum of PH5 per 1st cardinal rule? (if a card breaks a rule, use the card)
Or is it still capped down to 5, they can just receive a -1 PH and still be at 5? (and counts as 6 when anything targets, uses, or compares 'base personal honor' making them nukes vs. den of iniquity and/or R. bazaar)
Example cards with base PH 6:
Hantei
Doji
since base PH and PH technically are not the same thing, its grey to me. Also, we say Hantei can assign vs. Ki-Rin (which was the only situation where it came up in our group prior to these base PH comparing cards in EE) which this will confirm/deny
A: The First Cardinal Rule allows their PH of 6.
The Ki-Rin will not keep Hantei or Doji from attacking you. Jon Palmer, "base Personal Honor 6 vs. maximum PH 5", 28 Feb 2012
