Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Ki-Rin's Shrine 2G Unique. While Ki-Rin's Shrine is in play, the Chi of your Personalities cannot be lowered below their Personal Honor, unless the loss is caused by your cards or Stronghold or by tokens they created." [MRP, Diamond Edition, 27 October 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 82
- Exchanging Chi and Personal Honor will kill someone with a pre-swap Personal Honor of zero, because Chi drops briefly to this value. [Netnews, November 1999] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 82
- Will prevent a Personality from having his Chi reduced further even if it's already below his Personal Honor. [DW, l5rinfo, 8/19/98] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 36
- Q: So that means I won't gain extra honor for buying a Personality at full price while I have the Experienced 2 Bayushi Yojiro or the Experienced Ki-Rin's Shrine? But everyone I know says I do! A: For a while, the rule was that you did, but in Broken Blades the rules changed slightly. Now, when you bring a Personality into play for full price during your Dynasty Phase, you gain Honor right before she enters play, so effects that boost her Personal Honor while she's in play have not yet raised it. Note that Personalities that enter play dishonored will still give you a 0-point Honor gain if brought into play at full price, which will not restore them to Honorable status. Rules Q&A
- Q: I have Schmoe1 on the table(2ph, 3chi). I also have Ki-Rin's Shrine non-experienced. My opponent dishonors Schmoe1, then plays Force of Will on Schmoe1.
What happens?
A: Your Personality gets +3 Personal Honor (3Chi - 0PH = 3) and -3 Chi (0PH - 3Chi). The bonus to Personal Honor fails to change the Personality's current Personal Honor since Dishonored Personalities always have 0 PH regardless of bonuses or penalties. Since the Personality has 0PH, Ki-Rin's Shrine won't prevent his Chi from dropping to 0 as well, causing the Rulebook to destroy him. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 July 2004", 30 Jul 2004 - Q: What happens if I have a Ki-Rin's Shrine nonexp in play and my opponent casts Force of Will on one of my Personalities with less PH than Chi? It looks like there's a timing conflict here, so would the active player get to decide if the Chi penalty or PH bonus happens first?
A: What bonus? Ki-Rin's Shrine nonexp creates no bonus. It creates a Stat Minimum.
After all Chi Bonuses and Penalties are tallied, you apply the minimum from Ki-Rin's Shrine. If the stat's total value is below the minimum, it is set to the minimum, and that's the resulting "current value" of the stat.
(Diamond Edition Rulebook, Page 62, "Bonuses and Penalties") Martin Lund, "Rules for 6 June 2004", 8 Jun 2004 - Q: It wasn't a ruling. It was a change to the rulebook a couple of sets before Diamond. When you pay full price for a Personality from your Faction, you gain his Honor just before he enters play. [DE p. 59] Any continual bonus that raises his Personal Honor while he's in play, such as the Ki-Rin's Shrine, will not be in effect yet, so you will not gain extra Honor.
so what about the region that allows you to give your personalty +2 personal honor.(its a rare from heaven and earth or fou) do you gain that additional honor or is it applied after you bring them into play?
A: As has been pointed out, Shamate Pass says to increase the Personal Honor as soon as the Personality is revealed. [card text] That would be before you gain honor. You'd see the increase if you paid full price. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 4 Feb. 2004", 5 Feb 2004 - Q: Can someone tell me when then +1 personal honor bonus is applied, before or after I bring a personality into play??
A: It applies as soon as the Personality enters play, and before you collect Personal Honor if you paid full price. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 January 2002", 29 Jan 2002 - Q: Shrine)
I know this is a rare situation, but with experienced holdings (or any other types of cards that can stay out) are you able to overlay them at no cost? Do they keep their old abilities just like personalities as well?
A: Experienced non-Personality cards follow the same rules as Personalities (Gold/APC rulebook p. 35). So, yes (if they're only one level higher) and yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 26 November 2001", 27 Nov 2001 - Q: and if I have Ki-Rin's Shrine in play and I use Isawa Sze + Wasting Disease twice in the same turn?
A: Tokens aren't cards. Ki-Rin's Shrine will prevent your Personalities from Chi reduction due to any tokens, even ones your cards create. Sze can cast Wasting Disease twice per turn if he wants to and not drop below 1C (or whatever his Personal Honor is) no matter how many exhaustion and corruption tokens he gains. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 October 2001", 9 Oct 2001 - Q: If I have Ki-Rin's Shrine in play and I use Shahai's battle ability twice, what happens?
1.- Shahai dies, as the action comes from herself so the Shrine doesn't save her from death. 2.- Shahai survives, as the penalty doesn't come from the action but from the token, and the token is not a card, so the Shrine keeps her alive.
A: #2. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 October 2001", 6 Oct 2001
