- Erratum: Reads, "Ki-Rin's Shrine 2G Unique. While Ki-Rin's Shrine is in play, the Chi of your Personalities cannot be lowered below their Personal Honor, unless the loss is caused by your cards or Stronghold or by tokens they created." [MRP, Diamond Edition, 27 October 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 82
- Exchanging Chi and Personal Honor will kill someone with a pre-swap Personal Honor of zero, because Chi drops briefly to this value. [Netnews, November 1999] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 82
- Q: So that means I won't gain extra honor for buying a Personality at full price while I have the Experienced 2 Bayushi Yojiro or the Experienced Ki-Rin's Shrine? But everyone I know says I do! A: For a while, the rule was that you did, but in Broken Blades the rules changed slightly. Now, when you bring a Personality into play for full price during your Dynasty Phase, you gain Honor right before she enters play, so effects that boost her Personal Honor while she's in play have not yet raised it. Note that Personalities that enter play dishonored will still give you a 0-point Honor gain if brought into play at full price, which will not restore them to Honorable status. Rules Q&A
- Q: If Ki-Rin's Shrine said "Your Human Personalities gain +1F/+1C and your Dragon Clan Personalities gain +1 Personal Honor," and was lacking the "While in play" bit, then all your Human Personalities would gain the +1F/+1C even while Ki-Rin's Shrine was in the deck or in the discard pile.
Here are my two questions: 1) Is what I said about Ki-Rin's Shrine correct? 2) Was there an additional rule added in Dawn or in Wrath that I missed? Perhaps one that said card traits only effect the card that they're printed on unless the card is in play?
A: Well, I don't really do hypotheticals. That's Jeff's department. Further, I have yet to receive any reference materials related to Dawn of the Empire, so I don't help you out there either. In short: Forwarded to Jeff. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 November 2004", 5 Nov 2004 - Q: 1. I have Mirumoto Tsuge in play, dishonored and a Ki-Rin's Shrine Exp. He gets a Force of Will played on him, making him 1 chi (thanks to the shrine). By some minor miracle, he wins a duel and gaines honor, and is thus rehonored, what's his Chi and PH?
A: He doesn't have 1 chi from the shrine. He has 0 chi and dies. Remember that copying and swapping effects
create stat bonuses and penalties to modify his Current stats to the new values.
Since Tsuge was a 5 C, 0 PH Samurai, the effect of swapping his Chi and Personal honor manifests in a -5 C
penalty.
So now his Chi is: 4 + 1 - 5 = 0. Martin Lund, "Rules for 13 May 2004", 16 May 2004 - Q: I checked through the rulebook and the accumulated rulings, but couldn't find an answer to this. I can't find anything in the rulebook saying a holding cannot produce effects when bowed, such as Fortress of the Dragonfly or Ki-Rins Shrine exp. Could Private Dojo's reaction be used while it is bowed?
A: Gold Edition rulebook, page 24:
] Once a card or Stronghold bows, it cannot take another action until ] it straightens, not even an action that does not bow the card. ] Bowing does not turn off continuous effects of a card, such as ] traits, Force and Chi bonuses, or effects that are not actions (see ] page 47 for the definition of "action").
The Shrine and the Fortress give their bonuses when bowed, but the Dojo's Reaction cannot be used. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 February 2003", 6 Feb 2003 - Q: If my Dragon clan personality is dishonored while Ki-Rin's Shrine (Experienced) is in play, is the personality's personal honor equal to 1 or 0.
A: 0. Always apply Dishonor's reduction after any other changes. [GE rulebook p. 60] Jeff Alexander, "post for 27 September 2002", 28 Sep 2002 - Q: I was wondering if Otomo Motoshi could benefit from the ruling regarding Ki-Rin's Shrine (exp) and bringing people into play to gain honor?
A: No. See Archive entry on Otomo Motoshi. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 24 June 2002", 24 Jun 2002 - Q: Hi, I was wondering what would happen if a Crane player had Ki-Rin's Shrine (exp) out and brought Doji Reju (exp2) into play for full?
A. the player gains 2 honor. B. the player gains 3 honor. C. this question has been answered and I somehow missed it when I looked.
A: Reju Exp. is a Dragon Clan Personality. He'd get the Personal Honor bonus, and being 3PH upon entering play, the Crane player would gain 3 Honor. Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 June 2002", 7 Jun 2002 - Q: Honored Rules Guys -
Regarding the event Rain of Emeralds:
"All human Courtier Personalities in play gain +2 Personal Honor and the ability "Political Limited: Bow to gain 1 Honor." until the start of your next turn."
When paying full for human courtiers from your clan during your Dynasty phase, do they have +2 Personal Honor which you gain (per ruling on Yojiro Experienced 2 and Ki-Rin's Shrine Experienced)while the Emeralds are Raining since the event applies "until the start of your next turn."
A: No. That's not the Event's duration, that's how long those bonuses and abilities last. Rain of Emeralds applies one time only, only to Courtiers in play when it resolves. Ones brought into play later that turn are unaffected.
This is a REVERSAL of Zen's original ruling. Sorry, Zen. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 May 2002", 22 May 2002 - Q: When paying full for human courtiers from your clan during your Dynasty phase, do they have +2 Personal Honor which you gain (per ruling on Yojiro Experienced 2 and Ki-Rin's Shrine Experienced) while the Emeralds are Raining[.]
Yes.
Zen, I would like more elaboration on this ruling.
A: See Archive, General Rules, Entering Play: Cards enter play before effects -- i.e., gaining honor for hiring them at full price -- happen. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 20 May 2002", 21 May 2002 - Q: When paying full for human courtiers from your clan during your Dynasty phase, do they have +2 Personal Honor which you gain (per ruling on Yojiro Experienced 2 and Ki-Rin's Shrine Experienced) while the Emeralds are Raining since the event applies "until the start of your next turn."
A: An exactly correct application of the ruling. Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 19 May 2002", 20 May 2002 - Q: Does Geisha Assassin temporarily create a personality that you control? If so, it's presumably Human (since no trait makes it Nonhuman). Would it then gain the benefit of any Fortress of the Dragonfly or Ki-Rin's Shrine (exp.) you have in play?
A: Yes, yes, yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 March 2002", 2 Mar 2002 - Q: Does the +1 personal honor add to your honor if you pay full for the personality??
A: These bonuses add before honor is gained, so yes, they increase the honor you get for buying an in-clan Personality at full price. Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 January 2002", 24 Jan 2002 - Q: Encountered a persitent reoccurance of existing misinformation, specifically, the idea that an effect specifying "all of your personalities" will affect not only all personalities you currently control, but all potential personalities in your Dynasty deck. Suggest that this idea stems from the existing rulings regarding personal honor and honor gained for personalities on Bayushi Yojiro exp2 and Ki-Rin's Shrine exp (q.v.).
A: Don't discount the influence of At'tok'tuk Sensei, et. al. Their incorrect usage of the term "your" and the subsequent rulings that supported intent rather than wording also confound the issue. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 January 2002", 12 Jan 2002
