Rules Q&A
- Q: Lets say you Wedge one of your guys with a weapon or armor attached. At the beginning of resolution, they play a overconfidence in reaction to the doubling of force. Can you then play an armed in ready to straighten that guy (along with all the other people with weapon or armor)? So basically is the armed and ready a blanketing effect that doesnt target (since it says all), or does the specifying of your people and only the ones with weapons or armor, make it targeted?
A: "If no player, under any circumstance, has to choose what gets affected, the action is not targeted." (L5R FAQ, Section 2, "Clarifying the Rules")
It shouldn't target. No one gets to choose what it affects, ever, unless I'm missing something here. Martin Lund, "Rules for 18 April 2004", 20 Apr 2004 - Q: Hello... Well, maybe it's a silly question but... If someone plays barren fields and all my personallities have a weapon, may I play Armed and Ready to prevent them bowing?
A: Armed and Ready says:
"Reaction: Play at the start of a Resolution Segment to straighten all your Personalities at this battle with a Weapon or an Armor (or both)."
So it does not prevent anything. It'll unbow Personalities, but that isn't the same as preventing them from bowing. That's an important distinction for effects that key off of becoming bowed or straightening (like Fires of Dishonor).
As for the timing of these cards, Delayed Terrains (like Barren Fields) take place immediately before the end of the Battle Action Segment. (basically, after all players pass in a row on their opportunity to play an Open or Battle action)
The Battle Action Segment comes before the Resolution Segment, so Barren Fields will bow a bunch of cards, and then you can play Armed and Ready to straighten Personalities with attached Weapons and / or Armor. Martin Lund, "Rules for 31 March 2004", 2 Apr 2004 - Q: Can I use Fall on your knees in response to an Armed and Ready?
A: No. Armed and Ready isn't played in the Action Segment (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 21 August 2003, Part 2", 22 Aug 2003 - Q: It may be a relatively simple answer, but I was unsure and figured I would ask anyways.
Can I cancel my opponent playing Armed and Ready with my Fall on Your Knees?
A: No. Fall on your Knees cancels Reactions played during the Battle Action Segment. Armed and Ready happens at the start of the Resolution Segment. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 8th, 2003", 8 Aug 2003 - Q: Honor's Lesson Dojo: Unique. Reaction: Bow after all players pass consecutively in a battle and before delayed Terrains resolve to perform a Battle or Open action.
Armed and Ready: Reaction: Play at the start of a Resolution Segment to straighten all your Personalities at this battle with a Weapon or an Armor (or both).
My question is, does one have to be played before the other? The rulebook says (from what I was able to find, anyway) that the resolution segment starts as soon as both players pass, so it looks to me like they trigger at the same time. But I'm still not sure, so what's the word?
A: The Resolution Segment doesn't start when all players pass. The Battle Action Segment ends, with Delayed Terrains resolving immediately beforehand (not simultaneously) [FOU rulesheet]. Honor's Lesson Dojo must be used first. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 March 2003", 31 Mar 2003 - Q: I have been asked for an official interpretation on a ruling I made this weekend.
If one player plays Armed and Ready, can the other player play Fall On Your Knees. I said yes, but one player said that it is no longer during battle, so Fall on Your Knees doesn't trigger.
A: As has been pointed out, Fall On Your Knees is playable in the Battle Action Segment only [card text]. Since Armed and Ready is played in the Resolution Segment [card text], Fall On Your Knees cannot cancel it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 February 2003", 19 Feb 2003 - Q: My defending army includes Kuni Utagu Exp. with Yoshi no Shiryo attached. The attacking army includes two bowed Personalities with Weapons. We both pass, and the attacker plays Armed and Ready. May I bow Utagu to cancel Armed and Ready?
My reasoning was "yes," since any action taken at the start of Resolution is still taken "during" battle, as per the wording on Yoshi no Shiryo. Was this correct?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 January 2003", 23 Jan 2003
