Rules Q&A
- Q: 2.) Personality hits 0C can i feign death them? or use Kisada's Shrine or the mountain does not move or any other # of "prevent death" cards ( like iron pillar). How does that work?
A: If a Personality dies, you can use Feign Death on them (card text). If the Personality dies due to having 0C, it still dies, does it not?
The only trick to it is that effects typically do not "wear off" when a card goes to the Discard Pile - unlike in Magic where damage to Creatures expires upon death. So, if you Feign Death a Personality who died with 0 Chi, he will likely be returning to play with 0 Chi, merely to expire again. The only thing death will clear off are Tokens.
One-shot "anti-death" meta-cards aren't very good pretty for staving off death due to 0 Chi. You keep preventing death, only to have the Rulebook throw another "die" effect at your Personality. You'll typically need some way to get your Chi back above 0, or you're a gonner.
Returning to play after death (Kisada's Shrine, Feign Death) is often ineffectual as well, but at least any Chi Penalty - Tokens - on the Personality aer cleared off when they are destroyed. Hida Shara (3 Chi base) with -2 Chi from on-going effects (say, Written in Blood) and -1 Chi from a Token would be put back into play with Feign Death, and she would lack the -1 chi Token (which was removed when she died). That would leave her at 1 Chi so he would not immediately die again.
However, if your Hida Tenshu (1 Chi base) is hit by Written in Blood (-2 Chi until the end of the turn), there isn't a whole lot you can do to save him. Martin Lund, "Rules for 23 September 2004", 27 Sep 2004 - Q: 4 - Hiruma Tsukiko is defending in a battle and she's killed during that battle (ranged attack, duel...). Can I use Kisada's Shrine to bring her back, knowing that "while killed" she's no longer defending in a battle and thus does not have the yu trait ?
A: Trick question.
She permanently gained Yu 0 before she got her first Yu +2 bonus. Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 June 2004", 10 Jun 2004 - Q: 2. My opponent loses a Crab personality and then reacts with Kisada's Shrine to prevent him from dying... can I FOYK this? Again, I don't think I can, since its after the battle has resolved.
A: You can play Fall on Your Knees vs. Kisada's Shrine, but again, only during the Battle Action Segment. If the destruction occurred during say, the Battle Resolution Segment, you couldn't play Fall on Your Knees. Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 April 2004", 22 Apr 2004 - Q: Can Feign Death, Kisada's Fist or Kisada's Shrine negate the destruction of a wedge?
A: No (http://l5r.com/ccg/faq.html#s4, Reign of Blood rulesheet). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 14 December 2003, Part 2", 15 Dec 2003 - Q: How does Hakai interact with Kisada's Shrine, Feign Death, etc.? Can Hakai's second reaction be used to prevent those cards from bringing personalities back from the dead?
A: You'd have to read each card on a case by case basis. If a card prevents destruction, Hakai's ability would have no effect. If the card is returned to play *after* destruction, Hakai's ability would occur first, as hitting the discard pile is a normal part of destruction.
Zen Fauleks! * Crab Clan Scholar * Unaligned Deputy Rules Guy Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 9 December 2003, Part 2", 10 Dec 2003 - Q: If I Wedge a peep with Yu, can I bring him/her back with Kisada's Shrine?
A: No (FAQ; http://l5r.com/ccg/faq.html). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 November 2003, Part 2", 14 Nov 2003 - Q: I target somebody with Yu with Wedge[.] I then destroy the unit when the battle ends as per Wedge. At that point, could I target the unit with Kisada's Shrine?
A: No. Wedge destroys "when" the battle ends but continues to prevent targeting until "after." Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 November 2003", 6 Nov 2003 - Q: [I]f two or more copies of the same Unique Personality are in play (say, after a One Life, One Destiny), they cannot be saved by "die briefly, but come back" (Feign Death, Kisada's Shrine) effects, right?
A: No (Diamond Edition rulesbook, pg. 56). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 27 October 2003", 28 Oct 2003 - Q: if the person you pick to be destroyed is a Samurai w/ the Yu trait, can you save them with Kisada's Shrine?
A: Save? No; a Personality targeted by Kisada's Shrine fully hits the graveyard. Return to play? Yes. (I know, picky.) Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 21 October 2003", 22 Oct 2003 - Q: Then what happens if I use Kisada's Shrine to bring the guy back in and what happens if I play A Wish Granted during battle, would the sword go from 0 to +8 or 0 to +1?
A: Any new Personalities brought into play would add +1 to the Personality targeted by Daigotsu, just like normal (except you're starting from a lower Force value). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 30 September 2003, Part 2", 1 Oct 2003 - Q: Can Kisada's Shrine be used to save a personality with Yu if it dies in such a duel (or when is 'during a duel' considered to be over)?
A: Yes. The duel is over just like when any other action is over, when all effects have resolved. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 27 August 2003", 28 Aug 2003 - Q: 1. Yoritomo Kalilea vs The Mountain Does Not Move Relevant text on Kalilea: Actions on that card may not be used for the rest of the turn. Relevant text on The Mountain Does Not Move: Destroy the personality at the end of the turn. Situation: My opponent's turn, he bows Kalilea and target's my Kisada's Shrine. He then attacks and destroys one of my personalities who has Yu with an action. I play The Mountain Does Not Move. My personality survives for the rest of the turn. Question: Does Kalilea's negation of Kisada's Shrine wear off in time for me to ressurrect my personality?
A: The active player gets to decide. End of turn *is* when "for the rest of the turn" effects wear off, so the active player decides in what order the two effects will trigger. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for July 15th, 2003", 15 Jul 2003 - Q: Can I play a Keen Eye if my opponet uses a "Mountain does not move" or "Kisada's Shrine"?
A: Sure. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for July 15th, 2003", 15 Jul 2003 - Q: HIRUMA TSUKIKO/KISADA'S SHRINE
Tsukiko is destroyed while defending one of my Provinces. Can I bring her back with Kisada's Shrine, or does her Yu trait vanish before the Shrine can take effect?
A: One of the lesser known rules about Yu - any time you give a personality without Yu a Yu bonus, you first give them a permanent Yu 0, then modify it from there. So, when Tsukiko assigns as a Defender, she gets a permanent Yu 0, and then gives herself a two point bonus to her newfound Yu. That makes her an eligible target for Kisada's Shrine.
It's also worth noting, though, that even did that rule not exist, Tsukiko would still be a legal target for the Shrine. Cards remember changes that have happened to them, even when they're dead. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for June 11th - Part One!", 11 Jun 2003 - Q: Say that I have a defending personality with Yu. I use the Citadel of the Hiruma's ability to double that personality's force.
I lose the battle and my defending personality is killed during Battle Resolution.
I have Kisada's Shrine in play. I bow it to return my dying personality to my fief, bowed. Does my personality still die at the end of the turn, as per the Citadel of the Hiruma's effects, or does the first death negate any further effects?
A: At the end of the battle, not the end of the turn, but, yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 May 2003", 6 May 2003 - Q: What are the results when a personality on whom Asahina's Blessing has been cast dies, and his controller wishes to use Kisada's Shrine to return him to play?
A: Asahina's Blessing moves him onto its caster's deck first, then the Kisada's Shrine's controller can react, which will take the Personality off the deck and put it into play. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 April 2003", 30 Apr 2003 - Q: Since the personality I played SOGF is now under my control and is a crab with the Yu trait (follow me on this one) and I have Kisada's Shrine in play and straightened, after I sacrifice said personality to the anvil, would said personality return to my home bowed under my permanent control or revert back to its original players home?
You are the last person to bring it into play. You are its controller. Also, the restriction against attacking wore off as soon as it died.
Does this ruling go against the Togashi Tadao ruling that no matter where the ring is when the time limit is up, it goes back into the deck? Or is the wording different enough?
A: Tadao says where the Ring goes when his effect wears off. Show of Good Faith does not -- the change in control merely ends. This does not necessarily send it back to where it was stolen from. It lets control revert to whoever would control it if it weren't for Show of Good Faith. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 March 2003", 31 Mar 2003 - Q: Since the personality I played SOGF is now under my control and is a crab with the Yu trait (follow me on this one) and I have Kisada's Shrine in play and straightened, after I sacrifice said personality to the anvil, would said personality return to my home bowed under my permanent control or revert back to its original players home?
A: You are the last person to bring it into play. You are its controller. Also, the restriction against attacking wore off as soon as it died. Jeff Alexander, "post for 27 March 2003", 28 Mar 2003 - Q: Kisada's Shrine [text]: Reaction: Bow Kisada's Shrine after one of your Samurai Personalities with the Yu trait is destroyed to return that Personality to play, bowed, in your home.
Since KS is a reaction to the destruction of the personality, does this pre-empt the Personality and all his attached cards going to their respective discard piles since KS does not stipulate returning the Personality from your discard pile as some other effects I believe do.
A: It is returning it to play from your discard pile. Personalities go there when destroyed [rulebook], and Kisada's Shrine is used "after" the Personality is destroyed to "return that Personality to play". [card text] Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 December 2002", 10 Dec 2002 - Q: Ok, both Golden Obi and Kisada's Shrine trigger off a personality being destroyed. According to the rulebook, a person committing seppuku is being destroyed. Can you trigger off of it and prevent their demise with the Obi and the Shrine?
A: Yes and yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 Oct 2002", 11 Oct 2002 - Q: 1. Hida sakamoto. He gives all samurai in his army a +1 yu bonus. Does that mean that after the personalities that have been in an army with him and had the yu bonus now perminantly have 0 yu when not in an army with him.
Yes.
can this yu be used with kisada's shrine.
Yes.
So... any personalities who have spent time in an army with Hida Sakamoto can be brought back from the dead by Kisada's Shrine?
A: I'm pretty sure that's what I just said, but, yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 27 August 2002", 28 Aug 2002 - Q: Here's an example: First turn I buy gold. Second turn, I buy Kida Kuon, overlay Kuon exp and then overlay Kuon exp2 on that. Third turn I attack with Kuon who gets To Do What We Musted into the ground. I play Feign Death (I'd say Kisada's Shrine, but it isn't released yet). Kuon exp2 went to the dead pile and then comes back in to play.
Does Kuon nonexp and Kuon exp come back with him (all stapled together) or is it just Kuon exp2 that comes back by himself?
A: Only Kuon Exp2 comes back, but he has all the stats, abilities, and changes he had when there were still two cards under him. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 August 2002", 2 Aug 2002 - Q: Otomo Sensei (+0/+0/+0)
All Clans
All cards that would go to your discard pile are instead permanently removed from play.
Reaction: When a player searches for and gets a card from his deck or discard pile, discard from play a card from your hand to discard the players card from play.
Question: If I'm running Otomo sensei, can I save a perso of mine who is destroyed with Feign Death or Kisada's Shrine, or does the sensei prevent that, because they are removed from the game before I can save them?
A: No, for the reason given. Zen Faulkes, "Otomo Sensei Question", 21 Mar 2005
