Rulings
- Attaching cards from your hand is an action. You may not attach cards to someone with the Journal unless they are cards that can only attach to ninja (e.g., Shuriken). Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 52
- Bowing to exchange cards among two or more Personalities is an action targeting every card being moved and every Personality receiving one or more cards. Thus, no cards can be moved from the Journal's unit, and no cards can moved to it except ninja only cards. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 52
- Holder may be targeted to perform actions that say "bow one of your ninja Personalities to..." (e.g., Night of a Thousand Fires). Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 52
- Cannot be selected for an action by any player [Card text], including cases where the Personality is not chosen by the player taking the action (e.g., Encircled Terrain, The 12 th Black Scroll, Yogo Asami). [DW, email, 12/2/98] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 52
- Q: What's the deal with Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal? Can I do anything to it or its bearer once it's in play? A: Let's read the Journal: 'Cards in this unit may not be targeted with actions. Actions which target ninja can target cards in this unit, however, even if the target card is not a ninja.' So there are some things that work. Kitsuki's Coin is legal, as is Doji Shizue Exp. The Journal offers no protection against Events or against untargetted actions like Narrow Ground and Evil Portents. But pretty much everything else is illegal. Now for the good news: they're illegal for everybody, including the Journal's own player. Once the Journal is down he can't attach any more cards to that unit, unless they're cards that only attach to ninja -- attaching is a targeted, Limited action. Bowing to exchange cards is illegal, too (with the same exception). And no monks or shugenja in that unit can be selected to cast kiho. The Imperial Herald, Issue 11, p. 27
Rules Q&A
- Q: That archive entry was written before the Gold Edition rules. It is no longer correct.
Does that mean that Hantei XVI + Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal for exemple makes it almost impossible (very, very hard anyway) for my opponent to perform an honor victory ?
A: So it would seem. Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 February 2003", 7 Feb 2003 - Q: -Can the second part of the action on Isawa's Last Wish be prevented by Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal without it affecting the first part?
A: Yes. Same reason. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 January 2003", 30 Jan 2003 - Q: This is the situtation: A personality attaches the Isawa's Last Wish on a personality. Then he attaches Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal on him. Then he declares an attack with only this unit. My question is: Can the personality use Isawa's Last Wish while the Journal is on the personality?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 October 2002", 22 Oct 2002 - Q: Just thought I'd hunt down some clarifications on things that came up in games recently.
With the Tactician Trait now targeting, will a Tactician with Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal be able to use their tactician trait?
A: Nope. You can no longer be all wise and brilliant in battles if you're too busy reading "How to be a Faceless Minion in Three Easy Steps". Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 14th", 14 Aug 2001 - Q: Come One at a Time is still useful when a personality holding Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal is the sole defender, right?
A: No. 'While there is only one defending personality' does not exclude the action from targeting that defending personality. Rule 3 only applies when an action affects more than one card. A single card cannot be all of a group. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 20th", 20 Jul 2001 - Q: Hiya,
My first question concerns the card Master's Tactics.
Master's Tactics reads "All effects that would prevent this card [terrain] from taking full effect are negated."
If I played Master's Tactics with the Terrain Battle of Quiet Winds, would I be able to target an opposing personality with Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal attached?
A: No. The Journal does not negate or prohibit effects, it restricts targeting. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 12-13 April 2001", 19 Apr 2001 - Q: Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal aka The Good/Bad Book. (Why isn't Kitsuki a Ninja?) Can actions that must target one of your Ninja's Target another players Personality with the Journal?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 18 March 2001", 24 Mar 2001 - Q: From private mail...
Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal [...] Cards in this unit may not be targeted with actions. [...]
Lessons of Honor [...] Limited: Target a player. Bow one of your Samurai, who can remain bowed. Until the Samurai straightens, leaves play or refuses a challenge, any of the players Personalities may issue an unrefuseable challenge to the Samurai as a limited action, [...]
If I have a personality with the Journal and an opponent has a personality who has performed Lessons of Honor, can the Journal personality challenge the Lessons personality?
A: <snip> Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for November 23rd", 23 Nov 2000 - Q: Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal Unique Cards in this unit may not be targeted with, or chosen as the performer of, actions except by actions that only target or performed by Ninja, or that will attach a card that only a Ninja may attach, even if the target or chosen performer is not a Ninja. You do not gain Honor from duels involving this Personality, battles his army wins, assigning him as an ally, or actions he performs. Reaction: Any number of times per turn, after a Ninja or Kolat action targets a card not in this unit, bow this card: Negate its effects.
Was checking the wording of the journal on oracle, and it now has a clause that the personalty may not be chosen as a performer of an action save that which targets or is performed by a ninja. So would that mean that actions printed on the personalty it is attached would not be able to be taken, as they are performing their own actions, and unless they are a ninja, they could not announce said action, per the good faith rule?
A: It's a bit of a tricky one so I won't hit you with the "use the search function" reply, but as seen here, the Personality in that case isn't being chosen as the performer, so the Good Book won't stop it. Jon Palmer, "Kitsuki Kaagi's Journals", 19 Apr 2013 - Q: I noticed that in the Oracle, the cost of bowing the journal has been removed from the Reaction for Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal. I was just looking for confirmation on whether or not this was a new errata. Thank you.
A: Nope.

"your" implies that you both own and control the card that it is describing. Is this incorrect?
A: Yes, this is incorrect.
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_X-Z: "When “your” and other possessive forms such as “the player’s” or “his” refer to a card, this means “controlled by that player" if the card is in play, or "owned by that player" if the card is not in play." Brook Cunningham, "Kaui Sugimoto EXP, Ninja Thief, Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal, etc", 5 Mar 2009 - Q: Can I use a personality's ability even while Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal is attached to it? KKJ says "cannot be chosen as a performer".
A: Right. Exactly what I just said above. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 14 Sep 2024
