Rules Q&A
- Q: If I use the Battle ability from Superior Opponent targeting an enemy unit led by a Samurai, am I considered to be targeting that Samurai for the purpose of triggering Know No Fear?
A: Yes. Per the definition of unit, an action or trait that targets a unit targets its Personality. Jon Palmer, "Know No Fear vs Superior Opponent", 4 Nov 2013 - Q: If a personality who has performed A Cleansing Breath tries to bow another personality and that personality reacts with Know no Fear, what happens?
A: In the absence of any other effect, the other Personality will not bow. A Cleansing Breath ensures that its target can perform actions: it does not ensure that the effects of those actions can't be negated.
A Cleansing Breath negates, for example, the effects of Daigotsu Hotako's action.
If you want to ensure the other Personality bows, you want something like Inexorable, or Tamori Takeshi. Alex Jones, "A Cleansing Breath and Know no Fear", 26 Feb 2013 - Q: This is so obvious that no one bothered to even explain it
What are requirements for a card to qualify as "MOST RECENT PRINTING" ?
For example - which copy of "Know No Fear" is technically considered MVP : - from Emperor Edition Gempuku (Unicorn) starter - because it is last to be printed as for today, although it is undistinguishable from first copy from Second City (except maybe flavor) ? - from Alternate Art packages - because it is last to be printed AND with different identification than first copy ? - the orginal one from Second City - because neither Alternate Art or EEG reprint changed anything in rules regarding the card ?
Thank you for stating the obvious
EDIT (2013-01-16) : Thank you for your post, unfortunately you did not answer the question, and example with Agasha Ueda is misleading due his history of prints. Sending PM to clarify, thanks!
A: Most Recent Printings only really matter when a card's stats or rules text have been altered with a new printing of a card by name. Changes to art and flavor text have no bearing on what MRP constitutes.
In your example, while the most recently printed version of the card is in the EE:Gempukku set, since none of the stats nor rules text have been altered by this new printing, there is no MRP with respect to deck legality and playing the card within a game.
Agasha Ueda is a prime example of how MRP works. If you look at the card entry in the Oracle of the Void, you can toggle between the CE and CE:15 printings to see the gold cost increase from 4 to 5. Also in the Oracle, the stats and rules text written on the right hand side of the card images is always the MRP. Ben Higgins, "Most Recent Printing", 15 Jan 2013 - Q: I think I'm pretty sure on this, but an effect that does something (say send home) that will not be negated will not be trumped by any effect that would negate it (such as Know no Fear). My question is whether or not it trumps a trait or effect saying it will not move.
A: Something that "will not move" is not negating movement, it's stronger than that. Therefore, will not will win out in that case. Jon Palmer, "Will not X vs X will not be negated", 8 Jan 2013 - Q: Heavily Engaged Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Each player targets an unbowed Personality he controls there, if possible. Bow all targets.
Know No Fear Reaction: After another player's action targets your performing Samurai: Negate his bowing and movement from the action's effects.
Player A plays Heavily Engaged. Player B picks his Samurai and then reacts with Know No Fear.
Question: Can that bowing be negated by Know No Fear? Player A's action didn't target the Samurai, Player B did. Right?
A: Know No Fear may be played in response to another player's Heavily Engaged, since Know No Fear only cares about whose action it is, not who did the targeting. Alex Jones, "Heavily Engaged and Know No Fear", 15 Apr 2012 - Q: I play Visage of the Orochi and choose as my optional target an opposing Samurai. My opponent reacts with know no fear, since Visage is a fear action. Am I right in thinking that my personality's force has been already raised to 6 and that force bonus will not be negated, as it comes before the playing of Know no Fear?
Relevant texts:
Visage of the Orochi Thunder • Fear Battle: Choose your performing opposed unbowed Thunder Personality: Raise his Force to 6. You may target and bow an enemy card with lower Force and no attachments.
Know no Fear Bushido Virtue • Courage Reaction: After a Fear action targets your performing Samurai: Negate its effects.
A: The ongoing force bonus from Visage of the Orochi is negated by Know No Fear.
See Duration and scope of prevention effects, in particular: Continuous and ongoing effects that came into being before a relevant prevention effect was applied are still affected by it, by default. Continuous and ongoing effects that came into being after a relevant prevention effect was applied are also affected by it while the prevention lasts, by default.
and
If a prevention effect is already being applied and prevents a new ongoing effect, the new ongoing effect never happens; it does not re-assert itself when the prevention effect ends. Alex Jones, "Visage of the Orochi and Know no Fear", 29 Feb 2012 - Q: If a player were to use Fury of the Sea's ability in battle against another player's samurai personality, could the opponent react with Know No Fear's reaction to negate the movement or not? Is Fury of the Sea's ability targeting a personality or not?
Fury of the Sea Water Battle: If this Shugenja is unbowed, bow him unless he is Water: In turn order, each player who now controls a unit in the current enemy army targets and moves home one of his units there.
Know No Fear Bushido Virtue • Courage Reaction: After another player's action targets your performing Samurai: Negate his bowing and movement from the action's effects. Reaction: After a Fear action targets your performing Samurai: Negate its effects.
A: Fury of the Sea's ability is indeed targeting, and therefore the opponent could react with Know No Fear to keep his Samurai Personality at the battlefield.
Know No Fear doesn't care who chooses the targets, only who's action the targeting is coming from. Ben Higgins, "Fury of the Sea and Know No Fear", 24 Feb 2012 - Q: Regarding: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=96188
The end result is different if the Crane player targets the follower. Since the samurai isn't targeted the Know No Fear isn't triggered. This results in the entire unit being bowed, correct?
A: Unless the follower itself is a Samurai, correct. Jon Palmer, "Know no Fear vs Trap is Sprung", 12 Feb 2012 - Q: If I, being a Crane player, play "The Trap is Sprung!" targeting a samurai with a follower, then what will get bowed?
Trap is Sprung bows the samurai and then bows the unit if it's user is Crane Clan. However, Know no Fear negates the bowing from the action's effects. Thus, I was wondering it would negate both instances of the bowing in The Trap is Sprung's effect or just the first instance of bowing. Regardless, the follower would still get bowed, correct?
A: Know No Fear negates the Samurai's bowing from the action's effects, and both bowing him and bowing the unit are effects that bow him, therefore, he will not bow. However, if you are a Crane Clan player the follower will still be bowed. Jon Palmer, "Know no Fear vs Trap is Sprung", 11 Feb 2012 - Q: *Dragon's Breath Castle After another player's Dynasty Phase begins, if he controls any Personalities and he assigned none of them to an attacking army this turn: Gain 2 Honor. Reaction: Even if this card is bowed, after engaging at a battlefield at one of your provinces: The Attacker targets and bows one of his Personalities there.
*Know No Fear Reaction: After another player's action targets your performing Samurai: Negate his bowing and movement from the action's effects. Reaction: After a Fear action targets your performing Samurai: Negate its effects.
Question: Could you play Know no Fear to negate the Reaction of Dragon's Breath Castle? Need your insight Sirs.
A: Yes, you can.
Though the attacker is doing the targeting for the Dragon's Breath Castle Reaction, it's still "another player's action" per Know No Fear's trigger. Brook Cunningham, "Dragon's Breath Castle vs Know no Fear", 23 Jan 2012
