Rules Q&A
- Q: I got in a bit of a discussion about this issue on The Kobune Port, and wanted to get an official answer to this. I would like to know whether Doji Saori is able to target herself and issue her own duel. I understand that she can target herself, I have no problems with that. My issue is with being able to issue the challenge herself, and here is why I say this:
A: Saori can target herself. She can target a bowed duelist other than herself too.
Saori is the one Performing the Action, since it is on her card. The rule prohibiting bowed Personalities from Performing challenge Actions only checks initially when the Personality begins performing the Action, otherwise cards like Akodo Jusho, Judgment, and others that say, "Bow this Personality to issue a challenge" would be completely useless. Same thing goes for Spells that bow the caster.
It is not considered to be a "targeting requirement" or the like, as it applies to non-targeted Actions just as well. It is its own distinct rule. Martin Lund, "Rules for 29 and 30 December 2004", 5 Jan 2005 - Q: I was then assuming Castle of the Wasp lets me target a province with a range attack, combined or not, from my attacking unit, then I got to the words "exactly ONE of your attacking cards" which made me think I was wrong. Then, after reading one of the posts at the Kobune Port where they discussed that the Tsuruchi followers are a threat to provinces, it made me think that perhaps I was initially correct. So what really does Castle of the Wasp do?
A: Just what it says, of course! ;)
Copying Jeff's answer for the record: "Once per battle, when you make an uncombined ranged attack from one card in your attacking army, you may target it at the defending Province to reduce its strength by the ranged attack's strength. (You MAY modify the strength of this attack with Reactions -- this does not cause the attack to come from more than one card.)
"Once per turn, when one of your Mantis Clan Personalities in your army makes an uncombined ranged attack or adds to a combined ranged attack, and that attack targets a card in the opposing army, your Personality doesn't need to bow. (This may not combine with the first benefit because Provinces are not in the opposing army.)" Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 September 2003, Part 2", 23 Sep 2003 - Q: Retainer, Bow Perl Divers to produce 1 Gold plus 1 old for each Port in play.
Does this card counts Kobune Port too?
A: Yes. It counts every card with the word "Port" in its title or traits area. [rulebook p. 33] Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 June 2002", 15 Jun 2002 - Q: Second City Market: Open, Search your Dynasty deck for a Market or Port. Recruit it (bowed). Destroy this Holding.
I declare the action on Second City Market, and bow a holding to produce 2 gold for the action, since I want to get a Kobune Port. After searching, I found no 2GC market/port on the deck, but I do have a 1GC market.
With the new gold cost mechanics, how does this work? If I paid 2G for the action, can I recruit a 1GC card? If I do, do I lose the extra gold or it goes to the pool?
Thanks!
A: REVERSED (see below)
Recruit requires you to pay the exact cost of the card being Recruited. However, your order of operations here is a little out of whack, and therefore you're going to be okay.
First, you search for the Holding to Recruit. At this point, you'll see that you only have a 1G Market in your deck. Then, move to the step of Recruiting that Market. You bow a holding to produce 2G at this step, use 1G for the Recruit procedure, and have an additional 1G in your pool. Jon Palmer, "Second City Market", 5 Jan 2015
