Rules Q&A
- Q: The card reads as follows - Kolat Instigator (R) 4G 2Fo Limited: Target a Personality who must issue a challenge to a Personality of his controller's choice. This challenge can be refused without penalty. Lose 2 Honor.
My question is - Can the controller of the targeted samurai select one of his other personalities to accept the dual and then refuse without penalty?
A: No. It is illegal for a player to issue a challenge between two of his own Personalities. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 8 February 2001", 14 Feb 2001 - Q: In other words I guess, is the "Personality of his controller's choice" in K.Instigator a target of the action?
A: Yes.
Per Legacy Rules: "For cards printed prior to Dawn of the Empire: An action targets whenever it requires a choice to be made of what card it affects, or what card pays the non-gold costs of the action." (Citation) Brook Cunningham, "Shosuro Oniji vs. Kolat Instigator", 13 Sep 2010
