Rules Q&A
- Q: Talking about some new cards, a friend told me that following the rule applied to Kyofu about not counting as hida kuroda for the purposes of bonuses of the non exp version of hida kuon, Onnotangu's Hand from DotE, was not an obsidian card.
The foo rule says that if a card has in its title or as a bold trait the "foo" word on it, it counts as a foo card, but as i can remember the kyofu ruling, i am not sure if there is some exception about experiended "X" cards. Anyway it would be ridiculous that following that rule, Shosuro ( exp ninja shapeshifter), wont be considered ninja.
A: There are a few traits that can't be separated such as Faction Titles ("Dragon Clan" does not make you "Dragon" and "Toturi's Army" does not make you "Toturi) and "Clan Champion". The "Soul of" clause traits, hyphenated words, and restriction clauses like, "May only attach to a Ninja" have an exemption under the Keyword Rule. Reserved game terms like "Army," also have exemptions.
Experience levels, however, do not have any such exemption in the Rules that I can dig up. If a card has the "Experienced Hida Kuroda" trait, then it is a "Hida Kuroda" card, though it does not have the title "Hida Kuroda." Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 December 2004", 30 Dec 2004 - Q: If steel on steel is played on Kyofu, to issue a challenge to x personality. Then if the reaction from Private Dojo is played (raising the chi by the non-variable Fear strength -- 8 in the case of Kyofu), can I play 3 to get 24 chi (8 chi x 3 private dojos), making his chi 30?
A: Yes. That's exactly what each card does.
Just remember that after you take a Reaction, the opportunity passes left around the table to each player before it comes back to you to play your next Reaction as detailed on page 75 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook. Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 May 2004", 15 May 2004 - Q: Just wanted to verify, If Kyofu issue a test of might, or other duel that compares force, and then reacts with a Private Dojo you could play Overconfidence on him then right?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 1 March 2004", 2 Mar 2004 - Q: If I bring Kyofu into play, can I use Imperial Messenger to raise the honor loss?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 5 November 2003", 5 Nov 2003 - Q: I've looked for about an hour now (that's on dial-up, folks), and I can't seem to find the answer to this one:
Timing on Chi-Death. Does a personality whose chi is reduced/replaced by zero die immediately, or do they have a "window" of reaction time to try and raise their chi so that they don't croak?
A: "If a Personality's Chi drops to 0, destroy the Personality." [GE p. 29] There is no "stack" in L5R. Each action resolves fully before the next one begins. [GE p. 47] The only exception is Reactions, and even those will only interrupt an effect if they are Reactions TO that effect. In other words, if some trigger occurs (such as Personalities entering a duel), and two different Reactions are played that both respond to that trigger rather than to each other (Face Me! & Private Dojo), then the Reactions are played and fully resolved one at a time. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 May 2003", 2 May 2003 - Q: Is it true that overlaying ignores the Kaiu Walls restriction on bringing hadowlands cards into play since overlay is not considered entering play and does not trigger entering play effects (such as the loss of honor)
A: Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 36. C'est vrai. [Zen waves to the francophones reading the list]. It's true. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 20 April 2003, Part 2", 20 Apr 2003 - Q: If he is in the same army as Kyofu would he be capable of 4 fear effects total correct? (Two fear3 and two fear 4)
A: Correct. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 March 2003", 6 Mar 2003 - Q: Does inexperienced Kuon get his bonus if Kyofu is in play?
No.
Why not?
A: Kyofu's title is not "Hida Kuroda". Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 January 2002", 10 Jan 2003 - Q: Does inexperienced Kuon get his bonus if Kyofu is in play?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 January 2003", 8 Jan 2003 - Q: If Kitsune Gohei is in the same army as Kyofu, can he use his ability a second time?
A: If he can straighten (or avoid bowing the first time), yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 December 2002", 12 Dec 2002 - Q: If Kitsune Gohei is in the same army as Kyofu, can he use his ability a second time?
A: Yes, though you'll still need to straighten him somehow. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 December 2002", 5 Dec 2002
