Rulings
- The destruction of a Holding is worded as an effect of coming into play, not a cost. If you control no Holdings, she can still enter play. [l5rinfo, 2/2/2000] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 2
- May target and destroy a bowed Holding. "You may not target your own bowed Personalities with actions", but Holdings are not Personalities and this isn't an action. [Ibid.] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 2
- Erratum: Reads, “Kyoso no Oni 5F/5C –HR 7G 0PH Shadowlands • Oni Nonhuman • Lose 3 Honor. Cannot attach Followers or Items. After Kyoso enters play: Destroy one of your Holdings. Battle: Bow Kyoso: Ranged 7 Attack.” [MRP, Samurai Edition, 25 July 2007] Comprehensive Rules, Samurai Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, May 2009, p. 143
Rules Q&A
- Q: When Kyoso No Oni comes into play you must destroy a holding (ouch!) is that counted as a COST? Or entering play effect?
A: Both the holding destruction and the honor-loss are entering play effects. If you can't do them, you ignore them. Martin Lund, "Rules for 6 April 2004", 8 Apr 2004 - Q: I play I Give You My Name and I decide to get a Tsuburu no Oni from my deck or a Kyoso no Oni. Would I have to pay the cost of the Oni from being into play, it means, Would I have to sacrifice _another_ personality (for Tsuburu) or destroy a holding (for Kyoso)?
A: Careful. Not all oni are worded the same. Some have non-Gold costs (Tsuburo no Oni), and some have entering play effects (Kyoso no Oni). This can lead to rather different answers to what you might think is the same question.
In this case, the answer does turn out to be the same, because the only thing the spell waives are Gold costs and restrictions. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 19 August 2003, Part 2", 20 Aug 2003 - Q: If I use IGYMN to put a Kyoso no Oni into play, do I lose the honor? Do I have to destroy one of my holdings.
A: Yes: entering play effects. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 18 April 2003", 19 Apr 2003 - Q: I ask concerning the use of Turn of Fate and I Give you my name to bring personalities with honor loses into play. (I'm pretty sure its an effect I'm just double checking)
In addition, are the clauses on Oni no Tsuburu and Kyoso no Oni regarding personality/holding destruction costs, effects, and/or restrictions?
A: It depends how it's written. For a card that says "You must do X to play this card", X is a cost. Tsuburu no Oni falls into this category.
On the other hand, if the card just says, "Do Y," then Y is an entering-play effect. Kyoso no Oni is one of these. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 March 2003", 11 Mar 2003 - Q: Is a ranged attack that was generated by one of my cards a card effect or a rulebook effect?
That is, if I bow Kyoso no Oni to shoot and kill Kakita Bob, did Kyoso no Oni kill him or did the rulebook kill him?
A: Kyoso no Oni killed him. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 November 2002", 20 Nov 2002 - Q: Greetings,
Our local Taint Boy (tm) was playing with a dishonored Kyoso no Oni and successfully attacked another player, wiping out the army. His question was, even if he cannot gain or lose honor, would his personality be rehonored?
A: It would not. From the rulebook, his Family Honor needs to increase to restore the Personality. If it's locked at -19, he can't restore Personalities to honorable by doing something that would gain a normal player Honor. (That's also why 0-point Honor gains don't re-honor Personalities.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 March 2002", 23 Mar 2002 - Q: Kyoso no Oni says:
Unaligned Shadowlands. Nonhuman. No Followers or Items. You must destroy one of your holdings when this card is put into play. Lose 3 Honor. Battle Elemental: Bow to make a Ranged 7 Attack.
Does that mean that you have to destroy one of your unbowed holdings?
A: Nope. It means you have to destroy a holding, which can be bowed or unbowed due to the fact that it's not a personality, and Kyoso no Oni's effect is not an action. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for January 6th", 6 Jan 2001 - Q: Kyoso no Oni Exp 3
Honor loss is a trait. See: http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Traits
http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Order_of_effects: "Effects occur in the order they are written."
Kyoso no Oni enters play, since both honor loss and her destroy effect are both traits, I can opt to destroy her before losing the honor. Correct?
A: Yes, although effects occur in order, both the honor loss and destruction trait are triggered to the same occurrence; the honor loss trait is implicitly "after entering play" just like the destruction trait. Thus, the traits' effects occur in an order chosen by the active player. Roger Giner-Sorolla, "Kyoso no Oni Revisited", 20 May 2008 - Q: Ie I destroy her by her own trait and as a result do not lose honor. Correct?
A: No. Roger Giner-Sorolla, "Kyoso no Oni Revisited", 20 May 2008
