Rules Q&A
- Q: (I'm playing Crane and), I Play Arrival of the Emerald Champion, I Play Make Your Choice on the Emerald Champion, I kill the Emerald Champion with an action like say TDWWM, I manage to get the Personality into a Province during the battle. When the battle ends what happens to the Emerald Champion?
A: This one (precedent: Hoshi Tadao): Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 12 April 2003", 12 Apr 2003 - Q: I'm surprised I hadn't catch this before...
Under Imperial Favor in the Accumulated Archives, it reads:
Giving up the Favor as a cost of playing a card can be cancelled or negated. If it is, the card returns to where it came from, with no refund of other costs. [extension of specific rulings, DW, 30 September 1996]
This applies to Arrival of the Emerald Champion right? So if the Champion is negated, it returns to my hand?
A: Correct. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for early March, 2001", 14 Mar 2001 - Q: I dont know if anything has been said on the matter, but is Arrival of the Emerald Champion considered "moving" a unit into battle? Mainly I ask this for Oni no Ugulu and Oni no Okura(Assuming her chi is 7 or more) to see if they would prevent the playing of AoEC. Anyone out there who knows? I am currently under the assumption that it isnt considered any kind of movement.
A: It's definitely movement, that being the reason you can use this card when you have no units in the battle (it brings a unit in). If Okura has over 6 Chi, then you cannot play Arrival to bring in an invalid personality. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for January 26th", 27 Jan 2001 - Q: Following this topic.
It is still unclear if all abilities on cards printed before Coils of Madness which have "discard the Imperial Favor" as a cost (now probably an effect) should be re-drafted with the "Favor" keyword. I searched in the Comprehensive Rules (p51-52), but this information is not explicitly stated.
Cards like "Insulting Gesture" or "Arrival of the Emerald Champion" are still not updated in OotV, but the database update could take a long time so it is neither a confirmation nor an invalidation.
However, this question is very important for Illumination deck in Legacy and Big deck formats and nothing can be deckbuilded without this information. Thank you for your clarification.
A: No, they should not.
At some point these may be updated to become Favor actions in Oracle, but until that time, nothing has been released saying that they should be treated as such. Jon Palmer, "Unworded "Favor" Keyworded Actions?", 22 Apr 2014 - Q: Is the Emerald Champion created by his Arrival a viable target for effects targeting Unaligned personalities such as Tamago's trait or The Badgers Live?
A: Well, I want to say first that neither The Badgers Live's nor Tamago's effects upon unaligned Personalities actually "target".
But, besides that, the Personality created by Arrival of the Emerald Champion does indeed have no Clan alignment, so he is unaligned and would be affected by those two cards. Brook Cunningham, "Arrival of the Emerald Champion vs Tamago", 3 Apr 2010
