Rules Q&A
- Q: Temple to Shinsei says "target and bow a monk / shugenja personality you control and bow this card"
A: Not according to the Samurai Edition printing, which, to the best of my knowledge, is most recent.
http://rules.l5r.com/Rulings_T#Temple_to_Shinsei: "Bow this card and one of your target Monk or Shugenja Personalities." Zen Faulkes, "Kyuden Asako Reaction and Temple to Shinsei", 30 Nov 2008 - Q: Hello I've read http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=61135&p=781424&hilit=temple+to+Temple+to+Shinsei+#p781424, and I don't really understand one thing: Temple to Shinsei says "target and bow a monk / shugenja personality you control and bow this card: gain 2 honor". Don't you have to follow the order of the text, and therefore bow the monk first, before bowing the temple?
A: You're correct that costs are paid in the order written. However, the most recent printing of Temple to Shinsei is not written as you say, and all cards are played according to their most recent printing (see Cardinal Rule #2).
Temple to Shinsei currently reads, "Limited: Bow this card and one of your target Monk or Shugenja Personalities: Gain 2 Honor." (Citation) Brook Cunningham, "Kyuden Asako Reaction and Temple to Shinsei", 30 Nov 2008 - Q: I understand this ruling http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=61135&p=781424&hilit=temple+to+Temple+to+Shinsei+#p781424
but i was wondering if you had a bow person, you used temple to shinsei's limited action, reaction of Kyuden Asako goes off, straighten him and then bow him to pay the rest of the cost?
temple to shinsei does not say it has to be a unbowed guy.
A: Looks good to me.
In the "Required Targeting" step you target your bowed shugenja*; in "Pay costs" you bow the Temple to Shinsei, react with the stronghold to straighten the shugenja, then bow him to pay the cost of the action.

(*) Technically, you need to invoke Good Faith here. Alex Jones, "Kyuden Asako Reaction and Temple to Shinsei", 23 Apr 2008 - Q: Link. If multiple costs are demanded by a single piece of text, they are paid simultaneously.
How does one go about judging the length of a "single piece of text" ?
(brought up because of misunderstandings regarding Temple to Shinsei & Kyuden Asako)
A: "Bow two personalities" is a single piece of text. They both bow simultaneously. "Bow this card and bow one of your Monk or Shugenja" is two pieces of text. "This card" bows first, then the Monk or Shugenja bows second. Chris Fuchs, "Costs: Mandatory costs; Special Wording Rules: Pronouns", 17 Sep 2007 - Q: Strike of the Dragon pt1a & pt1b Strike of the Dragon pt2
(Strike of the Dragon) Kiho Battle: Bow one of your Rings and one of your target Monks: Bow one to three target Personalities opposing him, each with Force higher than his own Chi.
Taking it in sequence, without seperating the distinct parts of cost/effect sentences:
Kiho Battle: Bow one of your Rings and one of your target Monks: (singular, costs target) Bow one to three target Personalities (plural, effects target(s)) opposing him, (masculine, singular, pronoun, cost target reference) each (non-pronoun, multiple, effect target reference) with Force higher than his (masculine, singular, Ruled: effects target reference?) own Chi.
In order to find where the Rules Team are coming from, some of my local playgroup & I proposed different reasons to support the current ruling: 'Each' implies pronoun, therefore it is the last possible thing mentioned that 'his' could refer to. Unable to find anything to support this. 'His' & 'own', together, implies reference to 'each'. Again, unable to find anything that directly supports this. Removing or adding 'own' in this case does not appear to change the meaning of the text definitively, except to emphasise the alternating singular & plural references. I believe if this were the right method of parsing, then the text would say 'their own' instead of 'his own', in order to precisely specify that it is the one to three effects target(s) that are being referred to.
Which specific rules are the Rules Team are using to parse this card & work out which reference relates to each target? (if they are different to the rules I am looking at in order to understand the card, I wish to know. This was the case with Temple to Shinsei + Kyuden Asako)
A: The whole sentence after "one to three target personalities" defines what a legal target is. Each target must be opposing your performing personality, and each target must have force higher than his own chi, referring to the target. Chris Fuchs, "Strike of the Dragon pt3", 17 Sep 2007 - Q: I used the quick search box on top of the forum to look this up and didn't find anything, so I thought I'd ask (Is there a more thorough search engine on the boards, or is that one sufficient?).
Kyuden Asako: "Reaction: After one of your Temples bows: Straighten one of your target Shugenja or Monks."
Temple to Shinsei: "Limited: Bow this card and one of your target Monk or Shugenja Personalities: Gain 2 Honor."
It's been brought to my attention that, after a player bows a shugenja to use Temple to Shinsei's Limited action, he can't actually react with his stronghold to straighten that shugenja. Is that really true? Have I been misplaying these cards the whole time?
A: Your Temple is already bowed by the time you pay the cost of bowing the shugenja, so your reaction window to straighten a shugenja has passed. Chris Fuchs, "Kyuden Asako Reaction and Temple to Shinsei", 1 Sep 2007 - Q: My stronghold is Kyuden Asako and I want to play a Spell with a gold cost of 4. I bow a Temple to Shinsei to produce 2 gold and as a Reaction straighten Chinatsu. Can I then use Chinatsu's Reaction for the same payment?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Simultaneous gold cost payment", 16 Aug 2007
