Rules Q&A
- Q: I'm playing Kyuden Bayushi in an Open tournament. Can I choose my two winds to be Hantei Naseru and the Underhand? Or does the "Hantei Naseru" trait in the Underhand somehow preclude you from doing this?
A: There is no rule prohibiting you from having two cards in play that share a trait, nor any specific rule making the Winds exclusive from one another. Martin Lund, "Rules for 15 January 2005", 20 Jan 2005 - Q: 2) We already know that bowing for Kyuden Bayushi is considered a use of the favor, but is it also considered a lobbying attempt?
A: No. Nothing on the ability or rulebook classifies it as a lobbying attempt. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 and 25 October 2004", 27 Oct 2004 - Q: 2) I play an open warfare on a Kyuden Bayushi. Is teh second wind still legal ? (I'd say yes, but not sure ...)
A: It doesn't matter. There is no effect in the Rulebook or in play that would remove the Wind from play once it was there. Open Warfare happens far too late in the game to stop the Kyuden Baysuhi player from bringing his Winds into play. Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 October 2004", 11 Oct 2004 - Q: Ninja Mentor reads "While in an army, this Personality may not be targeted by other players' actions unless he has performed an action this Attack Phase."
How exactly does this card work? Specifically, to whom does the "he" refer?
A: "He" refers to the subject of the sentence - "this Personality." Martin Lund, "Rules for 5 and 6 September 2004", 8 Sep 2004 - Q: Also, if a Kyuden Bayushi player uses his stronghold to pay the cost of discarding the favor, and then the action is cancelled (say, by Strange Politics) can the KB player attempt to use the action again by bowing a different one of his scorpion personalities?
A: That depends.
If the Reaction of Kyuden Bayushi is Canceled, then it does not count towards the maximum number of uses per turn.
If the Reaction of Kyuden Bayushi is not NOT Canceled, and you've already used it to pay the cost of the Action, then Kyuden Bayushi's ability has been used, regardless of whether the Action associated with the cost you paid is Canceled or not. You don't get costs refunded or pretend you didn't pay them.
If your Action gets Canceled before you pay costs, however, you don't have to choose to use Kyuden Bayushi's ability to pay the cost when the time comes. You would, however, have to discard the Imperial Favor if you had it.
This is why my Two-Fisted Monkey Style deck runs 3x Fall on Your Knees. Jokes about hitting below the belt with the Underhand aside, it really hurts to have your attempt at Bayushi-powered Right Hand movement nuked by say, "Confusion at Court" or "Outmaneuvered by Force" when you're trying to sucker-punch someone's Provinces early on. Martin Lund, "Rules for 5 and 6 September 2004", 8 Sep 2004 - Q: If my opponent uses kyuden bayushi and bows a Scorp as the cost of discarding the favor to, by example, Gozoku one of my peeps, can I bow one of my personalities to gain the favor?
A: Yes. Anything that triggers off the discarding of the Imperial Favor will trigger off of using Political Adjunct, Commanding Favor or Kyuden Bayushi in the stead of actually discarding the Favor. Martin Lund, "Rules for 5 and 6 September 2004", 8 Sep 2004 - Q: In the archive you can find this :
Imperial Favor If a card is used to pay the cost of an Imperial Favor effect (e.g., Acquiring Favor), it is considered a use of the Favor in all ways. [VRD, 28 December 2001]
In all respect, this should be applicable to Kyuden Bayushi, BUT a stronghold is not a card.
So do you plan to update the ruling OR does Kyuden Bayushi creates an exception ?
A: That would be Zen's department. It does seem to need an update. I guess I could sick so Yasuki Taskmasters on him or something, but I think they'd just take his side, being Crabs and all. Martin Lund, "Rules for 18-21 August 2004", 29 Aug 2004 - Q: Regarding this ruling (and the similar one just posted): viewtopic.php?f=59&t=109338&p=1434799&hilit=shibata+sensei&sid=362d8d5ead7f6a4d0ecfb122f7ec38ff#p1434799
What if the favor action you are taking has Absent, like Toturi Tsudao? Would the courtier still need to be at the battlefield? If so, is there any keyword associated with an action that would allow the courtier to be at home?
Also, could you clarify whether the courtier would have to be at the batttle if I was using the reaction from Kyuden Bayushi with the rulebook favor action? What about with Toturi Tsudao?
A: Absent will not help you. While it allows you to ignore the Rule of Presence, it gives no such exception to the Rule of Location. I believe a Personality with a Favor Absent Home battle ability that does not bow him as a cost of the ability would be able to use it via Shibata Sensei.
Kyuden Bayushi's ability is a Reaction, which isn't governed by Presence and Location. It still works. Jon Palmer, "Shibata Sensei and targets", 26 Sep 2014 - Q: Hi,
I have a question about At'tok'tuk Sensei...
I use this Sensei. I resolve the Event : Alliance, may I select the Ratling faction ? If I can, do the ratling personalities I own cost 2 less gold? I mean, may I enter play a ratling personality from one of my province during my dynasty phase for Zero gold if its base gold cost is 4 ?
If I use one of the Stronghold : "Hidden Catacomb" or "Kyuden Bayushi" with this Sensei, may I bow a ratling personality I own to pay a cost of discarding the Imperial Favor?
A: Assuming you're playing Legacy Format: Yes to all questions.
All Legacy factions (see here) are legal to name for "Alliance".
As to the rest, the Sensei gives your Faction (Clan) alignment to all your Ratlings in and out of play. So, a Scorpion player's Ratling with "Scorpion Clan" from the Sensei could pay for the effects of both Strongholds and could be bought for the -2 "Clan discount" on top of -2 from "Alliance" for a total of -4. Brook Cunningham, "At'tok'tuk Sensei and Faction Trait", 7 May 2008 - Q: KB gets two Winds because of its trait. If that trait ceases to be effective (OPen Warfare, Amnesia), the implication, based on p.58, is that KB can only have one Wind.
A: Diamond rules, pg. 55: conditions for putting a card into play only matter when playing it. This situation exactly parallels Amnesia or Open Warfare and Khol Wall; second regions aren't discarded if a Khol Wall player's box is "erased."
