Rules Q&A
- Q: Hello, I have a question about evading actions with Snake Tattoo while facing opponent using Kyuden Kitsune exp:
Snake Tattoo: "Reaction: After another player's Battle action targets your Tattooed Personality: Move him to an adjacent battlefield. If he is no longer a legal target for that action, negate its effects."
Kyuden Kitsune Exp: "Your forests are maddening. Negate the first movement each battle into attacking armies at your provinces' battlefields from other players' actions."
So let's say that I target opponent attacking tattooed monk with some kind of kill action, and he uses: a) One Snake Tattoo to jump to unresolved, empty battlefield: a1) so he is stopped by forests, and he dies, as this was his first movement into attacking army a2) and he's not stopped by forest , as the battlefield is empty ant it is not (yet) an attacking army, as there are no personalities there b) Two Snake Tattoos: b1) so the first movement is stopped, but second goes as normal and he escapes terrible death b2) There's no need to use 2nd Tattoo, as 1st movement was not stoped
I am pretty sure that options a1 and b1 are correct, as there IS attacking army at empty unresolved battlefield, and there wee some similar questions asked on this board (as the question about ninja movements vs KKxp), but my opponent wanted to know answer to that exact matter.
A: You're right; a1 and b1 are the correct answers.
If he is attacking at the current battlefield, any movement to an adjacent battlefield would move him into an "attacking army". Even if there is no army there to start, he himself would BE the attacking army when he got there, so the movement would be stopped by those maddening forests. Brook Cunningham, "Kyuden Kitsune exp vs Snake Tattoo", 28 Aug 2012 - Q: The question is: If he uses an action that moves one of his units to Province B (Ring of Water, Help from the Shadows, whatever), will the movement be negated?
A: In the scenario described, yes; the movement would be negated. Brook Cunningham, "Movement and Kyuden Kitsune Exp.", 5 Aug 2012 - Q: Is the Stronghold's trait relevant to the duration of each battle, or is it a matter of battlefields (since one movement to Province B has already been negated, all other movement to Province B is allowed freely)?
A: Emphasis mine, in your quotes above and below. Brook Cunningham, "Movement and Kyuden Kitsune Exp.", 5 Aug 2012 - Q: Relevant text:
Kyuden Kitsune Your forests are maddening. Negate the first movement each battle into attacking armies at your provinces' battlefields from other players' actions.
[C]ould he move anyone to Province A after playing Asset Denial (while we were at the first battle)?
A: Again, in the example you gave, yes he could. Brook Cunningham, "Movement and Kyuden Kitsune Exp.", 5 Aug 2012 - Q: Therefore I concluded that the shugenja stays dishonored, and I gain 1 honor instead. Is that correct?
A: Correct indeed! Brook Cunningham, "Kyuden Kitsune and Spell Rehonoring", 7 Jul 2012 - Q: Let's say I'm attacking against Kyuden Kitsune xp with a personality at province A. I choose to resolve province A first and take an action to move my personality to a different battlefield (province B). Does the trait on Kyuden Kitsune xp prevent my movement? I ask because it seems that the battle hasn't started yet at province B, so the trait doesn't kick in.
Kyuden Kitsune xp Your forests are maddening. Negate the first movement each battle into attacking armies at your provinces' battlefields from other players' actions.
From the rules: A. Choose Battlefield
The Attacker chooses a battlefield whose battle has not yet ended, and the next battle will be fought there. B. Combat Segment
Engaging is the time point at which the battle, and the Combat Segment, both begin. ...

Thank you for your time!
A: The battlefields themselves exist even when not being resolved (a battlefield is a location). If you attempt to move from the battlefield at province A to the battlefield at province B during the battle (a process in time) at province A, this will be negated per Kyuden Kitsune exp's trait. It does "use up" the trait for the battle at province A, so as long as you're resolving that battle, you're then free to move wherever you like. Jon Palmer, "Kyuden Kitsune xp + Pre-battle movement", 28 Nov 2011 - Q: [EE] Are spells with the keyword "forest" considered a forest in order to be targeted by Kyuden Kitsune stronghold? Somewhat I was expecting holdings
A: Yeah, those Spells were specifically designed with this Stronghold in mind. There's literally no other reason for them to have that keyword. 🙂 Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 5 Jun 2025 - Q: Can't to find s definition of maddening. Looking at kyuden kitsune exp
A: It's flavor. Brook Cunningham, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 12 Apr 2021
