- Q: What about the actions on the five unique Wind-related Holdings in Winds of Change (Court Chambers, Kyuden Tonbo, Oblivion's Gate, The Shogun's Barracks, Tsudao's Chambers)? A: The answer is the same: if you do not have to discard the Favor as a cost of the action, you can use the action when you don't have the Favor. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, April 26, 2004, p. 11
Rules Q&A
- Q: So, how do these work?
Kyuden Tonbo: "Political Reaction: Bow Kyuden Tonbo and discard the Imperial Favor to draw a card after you focus a card from your hand or you discard an unplayed card from your hand. You need not discard the Favor if your Wind is Toturi Sezaru."
I have Tonbo unbowed, and 8 cards in my hand at the end of my dynasty phase. I draw a card, and discard one to keep my hand size at 8. I react to the discard by bowing Tonbo, and draw another card. I end my turn with 9 cards in hand. Does this work?
A: Sure. You only discard down to 8 cards once in a turn. Martin Lund, "Rules for 19 and 20 September 2004", 24 Sep 2004 - Q: When Kyuden Tonbo's ability is used as a reaction to discarding a card in the end phase because your hand size is above 8, does it cause you to make an additional discard to decrease to 8 again or allow you to have 9 cards during your opponents turn?
A: 9 cards. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 8 December 2003, Part 2", 9 Dec 2003 - Q: I have 8 cards at the end of turn before drawing. I draw my card, I have 9 so I discard one. In response I use Toshi Ranbo reaction to draw a card. Now I still have 9 cards in my hand, but I already discarded cards to go back to 8 cards once at the end of turn.
A: Yes, that's legal. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 7 December 2003", 7 Dec 2003 - Q: Kyuden Tonbo:
When I discard a card to give a force bonus to one of my tactician personalities is this considered an "unplayed card from my hand" because I don't use the text card?
A: Absolutely. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 13th, 2003", 13 Aug 2003 - Q: OBH Question regarding Kyuden Tonbo: Is the change in wording from 'Leaving Hand' to 'Focus or Discard' an erratum? I'm thinking here specifically on how it interacts with cards being placed from hand onto the Fate Deck, which would allow drawing with the original text, but not with the oracle version.
A: Ah! I see what happened. The Oracle text is accidentally based on the Winds of Change version, not the LE MRP. I don't think there was any errata reverting it; just a clerical error there. Will fix. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 31 Jan 2025
