Rules Q&A
- Q: May I understand that rehonoring is a separate rulebook effect, that is not delayed, and therefore it is triggered by the honor gain (negating it) but fails to rehonor because the personality is now dead?
A: Yes, you may. Alex Jones, "Last Step Castle action performed by a dishonored person", 12 May 2011 - Q: In general, may I assume that personalities that died dishonorably would remain dishonorable unless a specific card overrode the limitations of being out of play (such as 'target your dishonorable personality even if it is dead: rehonor him')?
A: You should so assume. Alex Jones, "Last Step Castle action performed by a dishonored person", 12 May 2011 - Q: On a related note: if the conditions for using the rulebook seppuku reaction are met but the samurai (or courtier) being targeted by the action is dead, would it be legal to announce the seppuku reaction? (I know that all effects of the seppuku would fail by the rule quoted above, but I'm wondering about the legality of the announcement)
A: It is legal to announce the action (if you own the Personality), since the rulebook Seppuku Reaction doesn't target the Personality. Alex Jones, "Last Step Castle action performed by a dishonored person", 12 May 2011 - Q: If I use Last Step Castle "open" action to bow Isawa Fosuta and raise my provinces strenghts. Do I lose the 6 honor for bowing Fosuta and can I start givening curse tokens starting on the next turn. Or do I have to bow Fosuta and us his open action to start using his cure tokens?
A: The latter.
You can not take two actions at the same time, nor pay for both their costs (in this case, bowing Fosuta) with one incidence of bowing.
Also, thank you for using complete card titles in your question, but please also include Experience levels for cards when posting in the Rules Question forum. Brook Cunningham, "Last Step Castle + Isawa Fosuta", 30 Jan 2011 - Q: Just to check my understanding - if you used Fires of War on Outsider Keep, and engaged at TWO battlefields over the course of the Battle phase, then I could react to each battle with Outsider Keep, right?
A: Yes, that's correct, because each battle engages separately (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Battles#B._Combat_Segment). Zen Faulkes, "The Fires of War + Last Step Castle", 23 Jan 2011 - Q: In response to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=88534
The comprehensive rules states: "A player may not use the same copy of a Reaction or triggered trait more than once to a single trigger."
Doesn't that mean you can't use Outsider Keep to react twice to the same engagement?
A: Whoops! You are correct. Thanks for the catch. Zen Faulkes, "The Fires of War + Last Step Castle", 22 Jan 2011 - Q: If my understanding is correct, Last Step Castle can gain 4 honor at the end of the turn if no provinces were destroyed, is that correct?
A: In combination with The Fires of War, yes. Zen Faulkes, "The Fires of War + Last Step Castle", 22 Jan 2011 - Q: If OAS is used on ID and the duel is accepted, will OAS negate the 2 honor gained from winning the duel?
I was curious if the duel that is caused by ID is done after the ID resolves (like the delayed effect of gaining honor by Last Step Castle).
A: Yes, the 2 Honor gain would be negated. The entire sequence of the duel occurs during the resolution of Impromptu Duel, not afterward. Brook Cunningham, "only actions speak vs impromptu duel", 12 Sep 2010 - Q: Last Step Castle: Open: Even if this card is bowed, bow your target Personality: Give each of your provinces a strength bonus equal to his base Chi. If it is not your turn, before this turn ends, gain 2 Honor if none of your provinces were destroyed this turn.
As I understand it, Last Step Castle has a delayed effect.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_a ... ction_ends
An action ends after its last effect is applied, if that effect is not a delayed effect. If an action's last effect is delayed, then the action ends instead after that effect is activated. The trigger “after action resolution” is the same point in time as “after the action ends.” The difference is that the action ends, but does not have a resolution, if the costs or effects of an action announced in good faith are interfered with.
As I also understand it, a delayed effect means that the action ends after the delayed effect is activated.
As well "after action resolution" is the same point as "after the action ends" which means, I think, that if someone were to play Thriving Light as a reaction to LSC, that Thriving Light would negate the next Honor gain or loss by 5 that occurs between the time the action is "before the action's resolution" and "until it ends". If LSC's action ends before the turn ends, is Thriving Light not still waiting to negate an honor gain or loss by 5 until the end of the turn? (when the action ends, which is the same point in time as "after action resolution")
Thriving Light Reaction: Before an action's resolution: Until that resolution ends, reduce the next Honor gain or loss by 5 (minimum zero).
A: CORRECTION: After Thriving Light is played, it puts its delayed effect into play (gaining 2 honor if no provinces have been lost this turn) and has resolved.
The Thriving Light will have no effect on Last Step Castle's action. Dan Jacobson, ""After action resolution" vs "after the action ends" and LSC", 30 May 2010 - Q: Does an action performed during the Action Phase that creates an honor gain later in the turn still work under War of Dark Fire?
For example, my opponent resolves War of Dark Fire. During his action phase, I use the Open action on Last Step Castle. He does not destroy any of my provinces that turn. During my End Step, will I gain 2 honor, or is that negated by War of Dark Fire since the Last Step Castle's action occurred during an Action Phase?
A: The gain of honor from Last Step Castle's ability comes in neither the Action Phase or Dynasty Phase.
It comes at the end of the turn, which is the End Phase.
It will not be negated by The War of Dark Fire's effects. Dan Jacobson, "Last Step Castle + War of Dark Fire", 5 Apr 2010 - Q: What would happen if a dishonorable person performed the Last Step Castle action, then was honorable by the end of the turn?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Physically_mark ... shonorable: "Before a player gains Honor from an action or trait that targeted, came from, or was performed by one or more of his or her dishonorable Personalities, the Personality is rehonored and the player does not gain the Honor."
The action was performed by a dishonored Personality (checked at time of activation; http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Delayed_effects).
The rehonoring, by necessity, by virtue of the fact that you cannot rehonor an Honorable Personality.
No honor is gained because the rehonoring and the Honor gain prevention are separate. Zen Faulkes, "Last Step Castle and Dishonor", 14 Mar 2010
