Rules Q&A
- Q: Regarding this ruling.
Seeking clarification: is the basis of the illegality of the assignment that the unit targeted by Leaked Information is infantry, and it is illegal for infantry to be assigned during cavalry assignment?
If so, then please help me understand the timing of the forced assignment created by Leaked Information. In particular, the way that I have been playing this card (perhaps incorrectly) is that, provided that the unit can be assigned into an appropriate army (i.e. the personality is straightened and does not have restrictive text such as that found on Yoritomo Chiako), the assignment happens immediately after my own assignment.
Which is to say, my understanding is that Leaked Information creates an assignment outside of the normal order of assignment. The rules are clear that order of assignment is (1)the Attacker simultaneously assigns all infantry attacking units, and THEN (2) the Defender simultaneously assigns all infantry defending units.
If the above ruling is based on the inability of infantry to assign during cavalry, should it not also be the case that a Defender's personality cannot be assigned during the Attacker's infantry (or cavalry) assignments?
Therefore, does the above ruling also make Leaked Information unable to "harpoon" enemy units, as it is illegal for the Defender to assign during the Attacker's assignment (and vice versa)?
Or does Leaked Information actually create a delayed effect which forces the Defender to make a specific action occur as soon as it becomes legal? (Edit: Changed "take" to "make".)
If an infantry Attacker has targeted a cavalry Defender, is the Defender allowed to wait until Cavalry Defense Assignments to assign the targeted unit?
Leaked Information Limited: Choose your performing unbowed Magistrate: Target a Personality with Personal Honor equal to or lower than your Magistrate's Chi. The Personality's unit may not assign to a battlefield this turn unless your Magistrate is there. After each time your Magistrate's unit assigns this turn, assign the Personality's unit to the same battlefield (if legal).
A: Fair point. Will chew on it and get back. Zen Faulkes, "Leaked Information", 4 Mar 2011 - Q: I have a Mirumoto Shiki in play. I choose him to perform Leaked Information and target an opponents Infantry personality. During the Cavalry Maneuvers Segment, I assign Shiki. I assume the infantry personality will have to stay at home.
A: Yes. CORRECTION: No. See below.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Costs_and_restr ... ermissions: "A permission does not break rules that it doesn't specifically refer to.
"Example: 'Your target Infantry Personality may assign in Cavalry Maneuvers' does not allow a bowed unit to assign." Zen Faulkes, "Leaked Information", 3 Mar 2011 - Q: 1) does the Triggered Effect of Leaked Information care if the original performing Personality is still a Magistrate at the time he assigns to a battlefield?
A: No.
See References: Once a card or other game element is identified by a keyword in a trait or action’s text (such as, “Bow one of your Samurai”) further references to that keyword within that trait or action are meant to only identify the particular game element clearly (such as, “Your Samurai gains +2F”). Specifically, if the Samurai somehow loses the Samurai keyword between the first and second references, the second effect still applies. Alex Jones, "Leaked Information and A Magistrates Blade", 31 Jan 2011 - Q: 2) Does the Assignment of Leaked Information trigger off the effect of attempting to Assign the Personality, or only if the Personality actually succeeds in being assigned to a battlefield?
A: Leaked Information says, "After each time your Magistrate's unit assigns": if the unit never assigns, there's never a time "after assignment." Alex Jones, "Leaked Information and A Magistrates Blade", 31 Jan 2011 - Q: If I use Leaked Information's effect on a personality I control and then Ambush, are both personalities considered to be performing the action (Ambush)?
A: In other words, "Who performs an action?" This is a frequently asked question, so I must remind all to:
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_FAQ#What_performs_an_action.3F: "Personalities and Followers perform... actions where they are targeted between the two colons of an action."
Leaked Information does not change what Ambush targets, so it does not change who performs it. Zen Faulkes, "Ambush + Leaked Information", 29 Jan 2011 - Q: If I use Leaked information targeting one of my own personalities, and get attacked the same turn: Can I use Retribution to get both the performer and the target of Leaked Information to attack a province?
A: No, because "you may only assign one unit". Zen Faulkes, "Leaked Information + Retribution", 28 Jan 2011 - Q: May I use Leaked Information targeting my own personality then play Ambush to either cause no one on my side to assign or 2 people on my side to assign?
Leaked Information Political Limited: Choose your performing unbowed Magistrate: Target a Personality with Personal Honor equal to or lower than your Magistrate's Chi. The Personality's unit may not assign to a battlefield this turn unless your Magistrate is there. After each time your Magistrate's unit assigns this turn, assign the Personality's unit to the same battlefield (if legal).
Ambush Limited: Target your unbowed Personality: Create a battlefield (not at any province). Assign your Personality's unit to attack there. Assign another player’s target unit to defend there, even if its Personality is bowed. Other units will not move there. Fight a battle there (after this action's resolution). After the battle ends, lose 5 Honor.
A: Personality B does not assign.
See "May not": "May not" is a wording that prevents a choice, rather than a cost or effect - for example, taking an action, assigning a unit, declaring an attack, bringing a Personality into play, or targeting a certain card. “May not” works to prevent a choice, even if the choice is part of a required procedure. Example: An effect says "The Personality may not assign this turn." If a card effect requires the player to assign the Personality, the assignment still fails and does not happen.
