Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Let Your Spirit Guide You 0G 0FV When you play this card as a Focus card in a duel or use its Focus value for a Tactical action performed by a Personality, set its Focus value to the Personality's Personal Honor plus 3." [MRP, Diamond Edition, 27 October 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 24
- The card's text resets its Focus value, which applies after other changes if it is the latest one. [Reversal, JA, email, 6 December 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 24
- Treat the card's base focus value as PH+2, when appropriate. This happens before any other changes. [5/17/99] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 38
Rules Q&A
- Q: If Player A focuses a Let Your Spirit Guide You on a personality with 3 personal honor and then Player B focuses The World is Empty and picks a focus value of 3, will the Let Your Spirit Guide be discarded or not[?]
A: The World is Empty does not refer to printed focus values (card text), so it looks for the current focus value. Let Your Spirit Guide You has been focused, so its focus value is 6 (card text). It is discarded. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 November 2003, Part 2", 7 Nov 2003 - Q: Blade of Truths - If I name 0, can Let Your Spirit Guide You be played?
A: No (Rules Archive, General Rules, Duels). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 18 September 2003", 18 Sep 2003 - Q: From the Accumulated Rulings
Bonuses and Penalties Similarly, the printed focus value for Fate cards is found in the circle at the bottom of the card. Special text that resets a card's Focus values (e.g., Burning Your Essence, Let Your Spirit Guide You) only affect the current (i.e., base) Focus value. [Summary of other rulings]
A: This ruling is incorrect and has been removed. "Base" value and "current" value are NOT synonymous. "Base" value and "PRINTED" value are synonymous -- "current" value means "whatever it is right this moment".
I believe this rectifies the contradiction you see with Burning Your Essence. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 March 2002", 8 Mar 2002 - Q: Primal Rage
When you play this card as a Focus card in a duel for a Shadowlands or Creature Personality, set its Focus value to the Personality's printed Force plus 2.
Let Your Spirit Guide You
When you play this card as a Focus card in a duel or use its Focus value for a Tactical action performed by a Personality, set its Focus value to the Personality's Personal Honor plus 3.
A: Yes, these are examples of cards "played" when used as a Focus in a duel, because of their specific card text. In general, using a card for an effect (whether trait or action) is an instance of playing the card. Using it strictly for focus value is not. Zen Faulkes, "Do I play these to focus?", 23 Mar 2005
