- "A samurai's appearance is as clear as a war-fan's signal, for those who know how to read it. A vain man and a dutiful one will both choose their clothes with care, but the result is far different. Vice cannot be hidden, and virtue will find a way to be heard." - Kakita Hideo

Rules Q&A
- Q: Can I use the reaction on Luxurious Silk to pay an Invest cost?
A: No, sorry. "Invest" is not an action. Brook Cunningham, "Investing by Luxurious Silk", 23 Oct 2013 - Q: Regarding http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1321451#p1321451
Wouldn't the player be paying for an effect of an action and not paying for an action, or is that not a distinction that is made?
A: Sometimes, but not in this instance. Alex Jones, "Luxurious Silk And Tanimura, Makoto or Daiki", 25 Oct 2012 - Q: Hi, Once Moneylender is in play, can you use the reaction on yasuki Tanimura or Luxurious silk to put new wealth tokens on it?
Card Title Moneylender Cost * Text After this card enters play: Put a number of Wealth tokens on it equal to the amount of Gold you paid for it. Bow this card and remove one or more Wealth tokens from it: Produce Gold equal to the number of tokens removed. Limited: Bow this card and pay any amount of Gold: Put a number of Wealth tokens on this card equal to the amount of Gold you paid.
Card Title Yasuki Tanimura Force/Chi 2 4 HR/GC/PH - 8 1 Keywords Crab Clan • Courtier • Merchant Text Reaction: When paying for an action: Produce 3 Gold. Political Reaction: After another player's Battle action targets Tanimura: The player may pay 4 Gold. If he did not pay the Gold, he loses 3 Honor.
Card Title Luxurious Silk Cost 3 Text Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. Reaction: Even if this card is bowed, when paying for an action: Produce 2 Gold.
A: Yes.
An action is any ability that has the Limited, Open, Battle or Reaction designator. Ben Higgins, "Moneylender-Tanimura-Luxurious silk", 20 May 2012 - Q: Kaiu Village Reaction: After your performing Personality enters play from a Province, pay 2 Gold: Create a +1F/+1C Weapon Item, and attach it to him. Reaction: After your performing Personality enters play from a Province, pay 2 Gold: Create a +1F Armor Item and attach it to him.
Luxurious Silk Bow this card. Produce 2 Gold. Reaction: Even if this card is bowed, when paying for an action: Produce 2 Gold.
can luxurious silk's reaction be used for Kaiu Village?
A: Reactions are actions, and the 2 gold in their contraints are the actions' costs.
So, yes, Luxurious Silk's Reaction can pay for them. Brook Cunningham, "Kaiu village + Luxurious Silk", 30 Jan 2012 - Q: [EE] Luxurious Silk will also be nerfed in the upcoming Emperor Tournament?
A: (Replying to a player: "Oh, so Buying personalities and attachments are not considered actions in EE, right?") Buying Personalities is not an action. Attaching attachments is an action, BUT, the attaching action itself costs nothing. Paying the gold for the attachment is separate and LS can't do it. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 23 May 2025 - Q: [OBH] Do Wealth tokens increase gold production of reactions like the ones on Luxurious Silk or Barley Farm?
A: Well, as it stands, the 20F Rules are unfortunately rather unclear and arguably contradictory in regard as to whether +1GP tokens will increase things other than the "Gold Production" stat in the upper right of Holdings and middle-ish right of Strongholds or not, since the stat itself was only introduced in 20F.
But, the existence of the card "Bookkeeper" (and the fact that all of the printed cards that give out +1GP wealth tokens are from pre-20F Ivory except for one anyway) indicates that such a token will indeed increase any Gold Production of any kind on a Holding, be it from a stat, trait, or action. Such a token will not, however, give/create "Gold Production" out of nothing if placed on a Holding that does not produce Gold in any way.
(Replying to a player: "So for the upcoming tournament that's a 'yes'? 😜") For Legacy (and indeed, for Ivory/20F contemporary and arc-simulation as well), it has to be a "yes". Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 13 Apr 2025 - Q: Just out of curiosity. I'm wondering why the oracle wording on Aramasu's Vigilance is nerfed to not allow recruit actions (understandably bc that wasn't the original design) but on luxurious silk you let it ride. Silk is the most played holding in OBH bc of this. I love the holding but maybe should get the same treatment considering this also isn't intended to be used for recruit and all that.
A: Yeah, I've been reluctant to make a similar fix since LS in its broken form is so ubiquitous. Maybe one day when the Oracle is fully converted to 20F oriented wordings, rather than the partially 20F partially Emperor state it's in now. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 3 Feb 2025 - Q: Actually, the "coin in action card" is a good guideline to follow. I'm not being obtuse, I've just been caught being wrong a lot about luxurious silk.
A: Pre-Ivory, the cost of a card being brought into play (ie a Holding, Personality, or Attachment) was separate from the cost of the action that was being taken to put the card into play (and in fact, buying stuff in the Dynasty Phase wasn't an action before Ivory) But Luxurious Silk will pay the cost of any other action. So it will pay for Farmlands, etc. Alex Jones, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 27 Nov 2023 - Q: Out of curiosity, what exactly does luxurious silk’s reaction pay for in emperor edition?
A: Anything with an action designator: Open, Battle, Limited, etc that has a Gold coin directly attached to it, including Strategies, as Marcus said. The Gold paid for buying a Personality or attachment weren't directly of the action as they are now post-Ivory; they were more a back end rules process. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 27 Nov 2023 - Q: Is invest an action? Trying to find a way to justify putting Luxurious silk in an Emperor deck.
A: Reese decided that the Invest cost needed to be a permanent change to the card's cost. Mostly because some targeting & effects are dependent on cost. Alex Jones, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 27 Nov 2023
