Rules Q&A
- Q: Mirumoto Kyoshiro/Doji Iza ability doesn't state that his action is an Iaijutsu action even though it creates a duel so can I use the stipend to increase his chi?
A: Yes, you may. Not all duels are of the Iaijutsu variety. Jon Palmer, "Mirumoto Kyoshiro/Doji Iza and Magistrate's Stipend", 21 Feb 2013 - Q: Can I announce Rhetoric targeting the honour loss off of Ambush, using a 4 Chi courtier magistrate if I have Magistrate's Stipend in play and use the reaction on the Rhetoric actions, or must I have a 5 chi courtier to even announce rhetoric?
In case Ambush's strange timing on the honour loss is an issue, would this work if an action just caused 5 honour loss?
Magistrate's Stipend Mine Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold, or 3 Gold if paying for a Magistrate. Reaction: After you announce a non-Iaijutsu action, choose your performing Magistrate: Give him +1C until the action ends.
Ambush Limited: Choose your performing unbowed Personality and target another player's Personality: Create a battlefield (not at any province). Assign your Personality to attack there. Assign the target to defend there, even if he is bowed. Other Personalities will not move there. Fight a battle there (after this action's resolution). After the battle ends, lose 5 Honor.
Rhetoric Political Reaction: Before a player gains or loses Honor from an action's effects, bow your performing Courtier: Choose another player. If the Courtier's Chi is higher than or equal to the Honor gain or loss, the chosen player instead of the original player takes the gain or loss.
Thanks, Nick
A: Yes, you may. The Good Faith Rule means that since you know you can use Magistrate's Stipend, you may announce the Rhetoric.
The timing of Ambush's honor loss isn't pertinent in this case as Rhetoric reacts to the loss itself, not the resolution of an action like many others do.
Edit: I actually missed the fact that Rhetoric is legal to play regardless of the Chi of the Courtier. It simply doesn't do anything if the Chi isn't high enough. Jon Palmer, "Rhetoric and Magistrate's Stipend", 15 May 2012 - Q: Magistrate's Stipend: Reaction: After you a announce a non-Iaijutsu action, choose your performing Magistrate: Give him +1C until the action ends.
Doji Hakuseki XP 2: Battle: Target an enemy Personality: Hakuseki issues him an unrefusable challenge. The controller of the duel’s winner gains 2 Honor. Bow the duel’s loser, and destroy him if he is dishonorable.
If I use the reaction off of Magistrate's Stipend to give Hakuseki +1 Chi, then will she have that +1 Chi in the duel or is the end of Hakuseki's action considered to be the creation of the duel?
A: A challenge does not create an Iaijutsu action by default. Therefore, Magistrate's Stipend will pump Hakuseki's chi for purposes of her duel. The action does not end until the resolution is complete. Jon Palmer, "Magistrate's Stipend vs Hakuseki XP 2", 19 Feb 2012 - Q: Let's say one of my magistrates performs a Political Action, and i react with Magistrate's Stipend to increade my magistrate's Chi. Then my oponent reacts with Enough Talk! and challenges my personality. Does the magistrate have the chi bonus during the duel?
A: Yes, he does. Brook Cunningham, "Magistrate's Stipend and Enough Talk!", 14 Sep 2011 - Q: Actions that are printed on Magistrate Personalities that have gold costs will trigger the extra gold production from Magistrates Stipend based on that previous ruling though, right?
A: Correct. Alex Jones, "Actions, Keywords and conditional gold production.", 10 Sep 2011 - Q: This is a generic question inspired by the FL card Cursed Relic.
I announce that my 4C Magistrate is going to use an action that has a cost of giving himself -1C. I then react with Magistrate's Stipend. When the action is complete, does my Magistrate have 3 or 4 Chi?
Magistrate's Stipend Text Mine Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold, or 3 Gold if paying for a Magistrate. Reaction: After you announce a non-Iaijutsu action, choose your performing Magistrate: Give him +1C until the action ends.
A: You announce the action from Cursed Relic. As a Reaction, you take the action from Magistrate's Stipend, giving the Personality 4 + 1 = 5 chi. You pay the cost of Cursed Relic's action, giving him 4 + 1 - 1 = 4 chi. After the action ends, the +1C bonus ends and he has 4 - 1 = 3 chi.
