Rules Q&A
- Q: A question about the following card struck me:
Make Your Choice
Open: Give one of your bowed or unbowed Personalities without your faction trait, the Unaligned trait, or the Shadowlands trait, +1/+1 permanently and straighten that Personality, if necessary. That Personality swears fealty to you and permanently loses other faction alignments
If I grab someone's personality with Show of Good Faith, and then (assuming it meets all conditions as listed) play Make Your Choice on that personality, what happens? They obviously permanently gain +1/+1, straighten, lose their current faction alignment and gain mine. But I'm unclear on exactly what "swearing fealty" means beyond that, if anything (the accumulated ruling are silent on it). At the end of my turn:
A: "Fealty" is in the Glossary, on page 72. Swearing fealty means permanently adding your Faction's trait to the card. That's all. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 May 2003", 30 May 2003 - Q: (I'm playing Crane and), I Play Arrival of the Emerald Champion, I Play Make Your Choice on the Emerald Champion, I kill the Emerald Champion with an action like say TDWWM, I manage to get the Personality into a Province during the battle. When the battle ends what happens to the Emerald Champion?
A: This one (precedent: Hoshi Tadao): Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 12 April 2003", 12 Apr 2003 - Q: Make Your Choice Playable by Shadowlands?
Not one with a Stronghold that prohibits swearing fealty.
The corrolary(sp?) here was : Shadowlands can play Poisoned Weapon even if they can't lose honor. Resolve all other parts of the action. _Thus_ Shadowlands can play make your choice even though they cannot swear fealty. Resolve all other parts of the action.
A: No. Shadowlands players cannot take actions that involve their own Personalities swearing fealty. Otherwise they could drop as many Oaths of Fealty every game as they drew, for free, giving every single one of their people an additional permanent +1/+1 each time. A: Not one with a Stronghold that prohibits swearing fealty. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 August 2002", 22 Aug 2002 - Q: I'm looking for a clarification on the wording of this card. It may seem inane, but I can see someone interpreting it weird. Here's the text:
Open: Give one of your bowed or unbowed Personalities without your Faction trait, the Unaligned trait, or the Shadowlands trait +1F/+1C permanently and straighten that Personality, if necessary. The Personality swears fealty to you and permanently loses other Faction alignments.
The way it's worded and w/ my understanding of grammer (which is by no means perfect), it looks like the wording implies:
"...without your Faction trait, (without) the Unaligned trait, or (without) the Shadowlands trait..."
A: That's the way it works. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 August 2002", 17 Aug 2002 - Q: Make Your Choice Playable by Shadowlands?
A: Not one with a Stronghold that prohibits swearing fealty. Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 August 2002", 15 Aug 2002 - Q: Make Your Choice Open: Give one of your bowed or unbowed Personalities without your Faction trait, the Unaligned trait, or the Shadowlands trait +1/+1 permanently and straighten that personality, if necessary. This can be read one of two ways. Which of the following is correct:
A) Give one of your bowed or unbowed Personalities without your Faction trait, *without* the Unaligned trait, or *without* the Shadowlands trait
B) Give one of your bowed or unbowed Personalities without your Faction trait, *with* the Unaligned trait, or *with* the Shadowlands trait
A: I don't see how you get B). If I go to a restaurant and order a sandwich "without pickles, peppers, or onions", should I expect peppers and onions to be on it?
The answer is A). Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 August 2002", 15 Aug 2002
