Rules Q&A
- Q: 1. if i have a Singular personality in play, then overlay them with Many Temple Master, can i then bring in a new copy of that original Singular personality?
A: Sure. You don't control a copy of that Personality anymore. You control a copy of Many-temple Master Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 November 2004", 12 Nov 2004 - Q: 2. if so, can i overlay that new one with another Many Temple Master?
A: No. You already have a card called "Many-temple Master" under your control with the Singular Trait. Another Singular Many-temple Master will not "join" (come under control of) you for any reason. This is more than just an "entering play" restriction, and also impacts cards like Show of Good Faith and even the expiration of temporary "theft" effects. (See the Accumulated Rulings for more details).
Being a broad restriction on taking control of Personalities by any means, it is not counted as "a card's play restriction" that Overlaying ignores.
"Ignoring the card's play restrictions," won't get you around paying costs, selecting legal targets, or having to attach Items, Ancestors, Followers, and Spells to Personalities either. All those rules are too broad to be considered "a card's play restriction." Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 November 2004", 12 Nov 2004 - Q: You can overlay Hero personality with Many Temple Master, or a THunder personality from Dawn and the Hero would no longer be singular right?
A: Well, you only carry over abilities (Limited, Open, Battle, and Reaction) when you overlay, so he wouldn't keep his name or any of his traits - including the Courtier, Scorpion Clan, Singular, and Hero traits as well as, "May perform one Political action per turn without bowing."
Many-Temple Master, however, has the printed "Singular" trait, so the Personality would still be Singular, just have a different name, thusly allowing you to gain control of a new copy of Shosuro Hokii. Martin Lund, "Rules for 15 October 2004", 20 Oct 2004 - Q: If I overlay a self-referencing card with Many-Temple Master can I still use the original cards ability. Say i overlay Hitomo Daisetsu, can I still untap him after casting a kiho.
A: Self-reference is always self-reference, even if the name changes. This has been true since the days of Ninja Shapeshifter and it is true today. When an ability of a card self-references, treat it as saying "this card." Changing the name or copying the ability to a card with a different name has ZERO impact on self-reference. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 September 2004", 30 Sep 2004 - Q: If I overlay a Singular Peep A with the Many-Temple Master, he gains the Experienced Trait, does this include that he is now Experienced [A]? If so, am I able to bring another Singular Peep A into play?
A: No. He's just the Many-Temple Master, Experienced. Nowhere on his card does it say he gains the name of the Personality you overlay, nor any other trait but "Experienced."
Since you no longer control any Singular copies of [A], you can bring a Singular copy of [A] into play.
Hm, I've got to give that a try with Kakita Tamura some time ... Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 September 2004", 10 Sep 2004 - Q: If he overlays a personality, he becomes Many Temple Master exp (not unique, but still singular). (In this example, MTM overlays a Shiba Fred and becomes MTM exp, experienced Shiba Fred.)
A: Why would he gain the trait "Experienced Shiba Fred." Many-Temple Master says it gains the "Experienced" trait, and nothing more. It can overlay Shiba Fred without being "Experienced Shiba Fred" because the card says that it can.
The card is still Many Temple Master, and is does not have "Shiba Fred" anywhere on its person. Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 September 2004", 10 Sep 2004 - Q: 1) Can another Many Temple Master then overlay a differently named personality for the same player? (MTM now overlays Isawa Joe.)
A: No. Many Temple Master doesn't lose the Singular Trait by overlaying. You still have a Singular Card named "Many Temple Master" in play.
While overlaying is not considered to be "bringing a card into play," you are nevertheless prohibited from overlaying if it would cause you to control 2 Unique cards with the same name or 2 Singular cards with the same name.
You can't overlay one copy of Shiba Tsukune nonexp with Tsukune XP1 and another with XP2 and have 2 unique copies of Shiba Tsukune in play. You can't pull the same trick with Many-Temple Master either.
Precedent: "Experienced and ExperiencedKYD cards are separate cards. Both may be in a deck, and neither impinges upon the other's uniqueness. (Only one Experience "path" may be in play at a time, however, just as only one copy of multiple Experience levels can be in play at at time.) For overlaying, ignore the KYD completely. [JA, 27 September 2002, 30 October 2002]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Experienced cards")
With that in mind, the other 3 questions are moot. Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 September 2004", 10 Sep 2004 - Q: If Many-Temple Master overlayed some other personality, is it then possible to buy (not overlay) another MTM, as the first one is now Experienced, which makes them different versions, effectively?
A: No. Unique and Singular traits key off of names, Experience XYZ traits that mention names, and "Soul of ..." traits that mention names. You can't control separate copies of Toturi, Toturi XP, Toturi XP2, Toturi the First XP3, Toturi the First XP4, and Toturi XP3KYD at the same time because each one is Unique. Singular puts you under the same restriction, only you can ignore cards controlled by other players. Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 September 2004", 10 Sep 2004 - Q: When the Many Temple Master overlays a Personality does it gain the Personality's Faction trait or does it remain unaligned?
A: Overlay Personalities don't normally retain any traits of the cards underneath the topmost card. Many Temple Master has no text creating an exception to this, so he doesn't have the trait. Martin Lund, "Rules for 26 August 2004", 31 Aug 2004 - Q: I have akodo tadenori exp in play already, he is unique. Then I put a many temples master on a normal tadenori is this legal?
A: Yes. "(I)s not considered Unique" (Many-Temple Master card text). Zen Faulkes, "Many-Temple Master", 31 Mar 2005
