Rules Q&A
- Q: Hello,
A player brings Masaya using his Open ability and then, during a battle, plays on him Perfect Sacrifice. Those two abilities have the same trigger of their delayed effects ("before this turn ends"). My question: if the active player decides that Masaya's delayed effect precedes the one of Perfect Sacrifice, will Masaya's destruction take place after he lands on top of the Dynasty deck?
Thanks
Perfect Sacrifice Dark Virtue • Perfection Battle/Limited: Choose your performing Samurai: Give each Personality and Follower in his unit a Force bonus equal to its current Force. Before this turn ends, destroy his unit.
Masaya Ronin • Samurai Open: If Masaya is face-up in one of your provinces: Bring him into play, paying all costs and paying 2 less Gold. Before the turn ends, put him on top of your Dynasty deck.
A: If I buy Masaya during the action phase and he gets killed in battle later on will he still come back to the dynasty at the end of the turn?
Yes. As described under Effects in and out of play, "Effects that were activated on a card in play, and then delayed, also apply to the card at the delayed point in time, even if it is no longer in play."
My question: if the active player decides that Masaya's delayed effect precedes the one of Perfect Sacrifice, will Masaya's destruction take place after he lands on top of the Dynasty deck?
No. In this case, because Masaya has gone both face down and out of play, the Tracking Rule means that the delayed destruction effect ends. Alex Jones, "Masaya questions", 5 Jul 2012 - Q: just want an offical ruling on this.
Masaya - Ronin • Samurai 3f/3c 0HR 6G 1PH Open: If Masaya is face-up in one of your provinces: Bring him into play, paying all costs and paying 2 less Gold. Before the turn ends, put him on top of your Dynasty deck.
say I bring masaya up in the open phase, and he gets cursed reliced out of the game. is he gone for good or does his text bring him back and put him on top of your deck?
just wondering, thanks.
A: Per the CR on Out of Play, Masaya will not return to another area (such as the deck) unless an effect specifies it would bring him back from out of play. Jon Palmer, "Masaya questions", 11 Jun 2012 - Q: I am also curious if the copy of Masaya on top of the Dynasty deck retains any permanent abilities or keywords from cards like "Spirit of the Blade".
A: No. Masaya's card will lose any grated abilities or keywords from card effects due to the tracking rule when he goes face down and out of play. Ben Higgins, "Masaya and Attachments", 28 Feb 2012 - Q: A follow-up question to viewtopic.php?f=59&t=96233
What is the timing of Masaya's "before this turn ends"?
Is it any time before the turn ends?
If it's during the end phase, and Masaya has attachments, do the attachments go on top of my Fate deck before I draw a card at end of turn or after?
A: You draw cards during the End Phase, but Masaya and his attachments go to the top of your decks after the End Phase, just before your turn ends.
Sequence of play, End Phase: Subsequent to the end of the End Phase, the player's turn ends. Alex Jones, "Masaya and attachments", 15 Feb 2012 - Q: If I use Masaya's Open ability to jump him into play, then attach followers or items to him, when he goes back on top of my deck, where do the followers and items go?
A. On top of my fate deck B. Into my discard pile C. Somewhere else entirely

Open: If Masaya is face-up in one of your provinces: Bring him into play, paying all costs and paying 2 less Gold. Before the turn ends, put him on top of your Dynasty deck.
A: You put his attachments on top of your Fate deck, in any order.
Card types, Attachments: When a Personality leaves play, all his attached cards leave play in the same manner as he did. Alex Jones, "Masaya and attachments", 15 Feb 2012 - Q: (I)f Masaya is put into play using his Open ability, then destroyed, then removed from the game (Imperial Command), would he be put back in the top of his owner's deck?
A: No.
Currently (as in, this might be tweaked as we work on the clarification), something that is out of play, but in game, can still be affected by effect, but something that is out of play and out of the game generally can't be. The exceptions would be text that specifically said, "This can do this to a card removed from the game" or something similar. Zen Faulkes, "masaya (put on top of deck) and removal from the game", 3 Dec 2011 - Q: Masaya: I can't find anything that would prevent him from being put on the top of your deck if he is out of play. (...) Is there anything about being removed from the game that actually stops that delayed effect from happening?
A: There is not that I know of, either. Being out of play does not immediately make the card ineligible to be affected.
In fact, there was similar question a couple of days ago about destroying an out of play card with a delayed effect. The ruling was yes, an out of play card can be destroyed: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=94949 Zen Faulkes, "masaya (put on top of deck) and removal from the game", 1 Dec 2011
