Rules Q&A
- Q: If I copy a spell that has a gold cost with Mastering the Elements, can I use Library of Rebirth's reaction for this part "pay Gold equal to its base Gold Cost:" on MtE?
A: No, sorry.
"Paying for a Spell" means paying the Gold cost for a Spell to enter play.
When you pay the Gold as instructed by Mastering the Elements' ability, you are paying the cost of an action ON a Spell, not paying for any Spell itself. Brook Cunningham, "Library of Rebirth and Mastering the Elements", 22 Mar 2012 - Q: If something says to "target a XXX", and such action is not a Battle action, is it implied that its "target a XXX in play", unless otherwise stated?
For example, if I play Mastering the Elements, and its reaction tells me to target a Spell to copy... do I have to target a Spell in play, or can I target a spell in a discard pile?
A: Yes, the "in play" is implied. Jon Palmer, "Is "in play" implied?", 29 Feb 2012 - Q: Can Mastering the Elements copy a unique spell like Unnatural Flood?
A: Yes, indeed.
No Rule or any card text prevents that. Brook Cunningham, "Mastering the Elements and Unique Spells", 13 Feb 2012 - Q: Can i use Gold and Steel to destroy Mastering Elements after it copies another spell in play[?]
A: Yes. Brook Cunningham, "Gold and Steel and Mastering the Elements", 4 Feb 2012 - Q: is a card's gold cost a trait?
A: No, it is a stat unto itself, wholly separate from keywords, traits, and abilities. Brook Cunningham, "Gold and Steel and Mastering the Elements", 4 Feb 2012 - Q: Hi there,
This question came up today in play. Imagine I play Mastering the Elements and copy Seek the Stain, I want to know if my original Reaction from Mastering the Elements is erased or not.
Basically I want to know if it's possible if I destroy the Mastering the Elements to re-attach it from the discard pile (per Seek the Stain trait) and effectively copy another spell when it entered play.
Thanks!
Javier
A: The keywords, traits and abilities copied by Mastering the Elements' Reaction are not lost when Mastering the Elements leaves play, nor when its Reaction is next used. They stay copied until Mastering the Elements is face down and out of play. Alex Jones, "Mastering the Elements - Multiple Copies", 22 Oct 2011
