- Reaction: After comparing armies' Force totals during the Resolution Segment of a battle and determining that your army has won: You may negate the destruction of all cards in the opposing army that the resolution would have destroyed. If you did, gain 3 Honor for each such card. If you are the Attacker and the Defender's province would be destroyed, you may also choose to negate its destruction.

Rulings
- If Mists of Illusion has been used, nothing can be "spared" for Mercy because nothing is going to be destroyed. [DW, netnews, 3/11/96] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 25
- Attacker has the option of sparing the defending Province. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 25
- Multiples are not cumulative. [DW, 12/2/97] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 25
- Is not Political. [Reversal, DW] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 25
- Cannot effectively be used in conjunction with Mists of Illusion. Mercy only gives you 3 honor per card you spare, and if the Mists have been used, nothing can be spared since nothing is going to be destroyed. [DW, netnews, 3/11/96] "You can play multiples, but you still only gain 3 per card." [DW, l5rinfo, 12/2/97] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 41
- Is not Political. [DW, l5rinfo] [REVERSAL] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 41
- Q: I've successfully attacked a Province and am going to destroy the army and the Province. If I play Mercy, do I still destroy the Province? A: Mercy doesn't say anything about sparing the Province. It's toast. The Imperial Herald, Vol. 1, Issue 1, p. 11
Rules Q&A
- Q: Anyway: What happens to the defending army at a battle where the province is destroyed and Mercy is played? Normally, defending units stay at the province they were defending until after the attack phase, but said province is no longer there. Are these units considered to go home or do they stay in some sort of "Ghost" province?
A: They go to where your Personalities are when they don't have anywhere else to be - your Home / Fief. There is no Province left in which to stand. Martin Lund, "Rules for 30 July 2004", 5 Aug 2004 - Q: If a new Mercy resolves and both players are under 14 honor and have lost honor due to their own cards, who wins?
A: Assuming you mean "No Mercy" here, as there is no such card as "New Mercy."
Cardinal rule 3: active player picks. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 1 December 2003", 1 Dec 2003 - Q: Mercy: Can I play this card as the attacker ally in a multiplayer game in order to win the honor myself instead of the real attacker player?
A: No. Rules, Battle : "The winning army’s leader (the Attacker or Defender) is the winner of the battle." Zen Faulkes, "Mercy & going as Ally", 28 Jul 2007
