Rules Q&A
- Q: Hello Rules Junta,
This is in response to http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=78914&start=0.
Regarding Michio, XP reaction:
Reaction: After the resolution of an action performed by a Personality who is now at Michio's location: Bow or straighten him.
Does this mean that any action performed by a personality (whether they were there when they started or moved there) is a trigger for Michio?
I just want to confirm as I'm a little confused by the response to the above linked thread.
Thank you.
A: Whether the Personality moved or not is irrelevant, the important questions are: "Did a Personality perform the action that has just resolved?" and, "Where is s/he now?"
If the answers are "Yes" and "At Michio exp's location", then his Reaction can be taken.
What the action was, and even whether it was a Battle or Reaction (or a Limited or Open if you want to striaghten one of your Personalities in the Action Phase), and where the Personality was before the action started - or even where Michio was, as long as he's there afterwards - don't matter. Alex Jones, "Michio (Experienced) Reaction Question", 7 Sep 2009 - Q: To the Rules Gurus
My question is this, does the 'is now' in Michio's reaction mean that his reaction affect personalities that move into his battle, or is this reaction usable on anyone at his battle that performs an action period?
Reaction: After the resolution of an action performed by a Personality who is now at Michio's location: Bow or straighten him.
thanks,
Jeffy
A: It means that the check for whether the Personality is at Michio's location is done at the trigger time "After the resolution of an action", rather than looking at the Personality's location at the time in the past when it was determined that the "action [is] performed by a Personality". Alex Jones, "Michio (Experienced) Reaction Question", 6 Sep 2009 - Q: Michio, xp: Does the word "him" refer to Michio himself or the personality who's "now at Michio's location"?
A: The latter. There is no other "him" that it could possibly refer to; the only noun in the previous part of the card is "Personality." Zen Faulkes, "Michio, XP", 6 Jul 2009 - Q: Michio, xp
Reaction: After the resolution of an action performed by a Personality who is now at Michio's location: Bow or straighten him.
Does the word "him" refer to Michio himself or the personality who's "now at Michio's location"?
A: It refers to the Personality who performed the action. Dan Jacobson, "Michio, XP", 6 Jul 2009 - Q: My opponent controls a single nameless samurai and declares an attack and assigns him to one of my provinces. I do not defend but I do control an unbowed Michio Xp. My opponent proceeds to play Determination by targeting his lone samurai and I respond with Michio Xp by bowing his samurai. The only battle actions in his hand require him to target an unbowed personality at the current battlefield that he controls as part of the cost. What happens?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_acti ... _targeting: "From the point when an action is announced legally, to the point after reactions to a particular targeting have taken place, if anything interferes so that the particular required targeting can no longer be met (including reactions to the targeting itself), the action fails. Its effects do not resolve, further targeting does not take place, and its costs are waived. It is still considered taken, but not resolved. If it was on an Action card, the card is discarded normally." Zen Faulkes, "Determination + Michio XP", 9 Oct 2008 - Q: Why wouldn't using Determination on Michio's reaction be a violation fo the Good Faith Rule?
A: There's a lot in the link in your post to which you could be referring. Let me assume that you mis-typed and meant, "Why would using Determination on Michio's Reaction be a violation of Good Faith?" and are curious about the original ruling, that Determination and Michio Exp's Reaction cannot be used in a vaccum with no other actions occurring. I'll try to explain this again as Zen has above:
The trigger for taking Determination is "Before you announce an action"; this means that it has to be pre-determined that you will be announcing an action before you can meet its trigger and announce ITS action. So, if you cannot announce Determination before meeting Michio's trigger to announce HIS action, and you have nothing with which to trigger Michio except Determination resolving, then the sequence can never begin.
Good Faith allows a sequence to begin that at first appears illegal but becomes legal over the course of the sequence. Two examples of that would be: 1) announcing a Ranged Attack with no legal target enemy card defending the province you're attacking, then reacting with Burn It Down to change the nature of the required targeting for the Ranged Attack, or 2) announcing Temple to Shinsei's action with no unbowed Shugenja to pay its cost, bowing the Temple first and Reacting to its bowing with Kyuden Asako to straighten a Shugenja and pay the action's remaining cost.
However, Good Faith only applies to required targeting, meeting conditions, and paying costs, NOT Reaction triggers. You cannot invoke Good Faith to start a sequence of Reactions which will cause their own triggers to occur AFTER you've announced them.
I hope I've made the correct assumptions as to what you were asking and have clarified the issue for you. If not, please try to be more specific as to what portion of the previous questions and answers were concerning you. Brook Cunningham, "Determination + Michio XP", 6 Oct 2008 - Q: A little more on the Michio Xp. + Determination.
What would happen in the following situation. I have a Hired Killer and I want to make sure it goes through. I target my bowed samurai. The samurai has now proformed an action and is now a legal target for Michio's reaction. Does Determination now guard Michio's reaction or the next action that I perform (ie Hired Killer)? In other words, bowed samurai + Determination + Michio Xp is legal as long as I don't pass priority and perform an action?
Thanks!
A: As described, you are playing Determination in response to Hired Killer.
To get Determination to affect the Experienced Michio's ability (which is possible), Michio would need to be responding to some other action. Or you would need a second Determination: one for Hired Killer, one for Michio. It would look roughly like:
Determination #1 played in anticipation of Hired Killer.
Personality targeted, providing trigger for Michio (Exp.).
Determination #2 played in anticipation of the ability of Michio (Exp.).
Experienced Michio's ability resolves, affected by Determination #2.
Hired Killer resolves, affected by Determination #1. Zen Faulkes, "Determination + Michio XP", 17 Sep 2008 - Q: Battles created by a card effect that does not create an Attack Phase are treated as normal battles, except:
* Such battles are (slightly) delayed effects that begin once the action or trait that created them has resolved, and the opportunity to play Reactions to the end of the action or trait has passed, in a manner similar to additional phases and actions. [CHANGED June 3 2008]
* Such battles have no Declaration or Maneuvers segments. Assignment and battlefield creation prior to such battles happen through card effects, and there is no opportunity to invite allies.
A: Ambush: Limited: Target one of your unbowed Personalities: Create a battlefield (not at any province). Assign your Personality to attack there. Assign another player’s target Personality to defend there, even if bowed. No other units may move there. Fight a battle there. After it ends, lose 5 Honor.
Michio exp: Reaction: After an action resolves: Bow or straighten a target Personality who performed it.
Thus:
1. Your opponent announces Ambush. 2. He declares the required targets: his performing Personality and your Personality. 3. He pays costs: none. 4. He resolves Ambush's effects: He creates a battlefield; he assigns his Personality to attack. He assigns your Personality to defend. He creates the delayed effects of "Fight a battle there" and "After [the battle] ends, lose 5 Honour." 5. Ambush has now resolved; you may take Reactions, including using Michio exp's ability. You bow his attacking Personality. 6. After all players have passed their opportunity to play Reactions to Ambush having resolved, the battle is fought. 7. After the battle ends, he loses 5 Honour.
