Rules Q&A
- Q: I have two followup questions for the rules lists for 11 and 12th of January.
<> <>From: Jeff Alexander <jalexander@a...> <>Date: Tue Jan 11, 2005 12:52 pm <>Subject: Re: [L5R-CCG] [RULES] Moto Ogedei & chi <>penalty tokens <>So, I'm still waiting on a ruling of how Tsukimi exp <> interacts with
negating a chi penalty from a token.
I never saw the original question.
Was the question, "Does she negate it entirely, or just for the current turn, then the penalty happens anyway if its source still exists?" If so, the answer is "the former".
Will Asahina Sekawa chance a token or other permanent effect permanently too?
A: No. Martin Lund, "Rules for 17 January 2005", 21 Jan 2005 - Q: The Sahara ability states "Ryudo uses his base Force as his duel stat."
a: Is there no errata on this? b. If I attach a +3+1 weapon on him, would that add +3, or +1, or neither on his duel stat? c. How would Asahina Sekawa exp 2 deal with this?
Thanks!
[Mod edit: Spelling and punctuation - ALJ]
A: Firstly, that's a trait, not an ability. Abilities are preceded by one of the action designators: Limited, Open, Battle or Reaction.
a. l5rsearch.com is not definitive. In this case, the text and images for Daigotsu Sahara and Daigotsu Ryudo are mixed up.
b. Ryudo's base force is always 5, regardless of what items he has attached. Force bonuses and penalties - from any source - only affect current Force, not base Force.
c. Ryudo doesn't change the duel to one of Force. He uses his base Force as his duel stat, even in a duel of Force or Personal Honour. Alex Jones, "Daigotsu Sahara and Daigotsu Ryudo", 5 Jul 2008 - Q: Some more context for this:
viewtopic.php?t=57010
The original debate was on bowed cards being able to use their abilities to straighten themselves, more specifically Horiuchi Rikako. My argument was, as you confirmed elsewhere, that no because it was conditional. Then the debate became that "conditional" as defined by the rulebook was too ambiguous. The rulebook reads:
An effect is conditional if, at the time the action, Event, or trait
producing that effect begins resolving, it has not yet been determined whether the effect will occur.
(bolded for emphasis)
Then it became important to know when the action begins to resolve. Again, by the rules the steps of taking an action are:
1. Announce the action or card.
2. Select all required initial targets, if any. Decide upon and select any
optional initial targets.
3. Pay all costs.
4. Resolve all effects in the order written.
If "Resolving the action" is not the same as "resolve all effects" then the action could be considered to "begin resolving" at a different time.
If it's at the same time as announcement (step1) (or "after" announcement, or "before" targets), then a card like Asahina Sekawa XP2 would not be able to straighten itself since it hasn't picked targets yet (step2) and therefore doesn't know that he will be his own target - making it conditional. Is this logic correct (assuming the if statement is true)?
If it's at the same time as targeting (step2) then it would seem to fall to the active player to decided whether you "begin resolving" the action first or chosing targets first. Right?
If it's at any other time (after targets, before, during or after costs...) then Asahina Sekawa XP2 could straighten himself if he had already picked himself as a target. However, if "begins resolving" is after announcement, then an action that has a conditional straightening effect and is therefore illegal to use while bowed (like Horiuchi Rikako, for example), only becomes illegal to even announce after it's already been announced, since you don't check if the effect is conditional until after you announce it (assuming again that "begins resolving" is after announcement)
Does that make anymore sense?
A: Oh, so the question is really about bowed cards using actions that can straighten cards. I've been thinking on that one. I'm pretty sure the solution to that is not going to depend on when actions resolve, though. Zen Faulkes, "Action Resolution Take II", 29 May 2007 - Q: If I use Asahina Sekawa (Experienced 2) to rediect the type of duel (or duels) does the force pentaly still effect force is is move to the trait involled.
A: A different stat is affected. Zen Faulkes, "Wanton Destruction redirection and Asahina Sekawa (Exp 2)", 25 Mar 2005 - Q: there are whole lot of other cards that affect ( give a pental) a stat and then do something base on that stats new value ( shinjo's courage) if you redirect the pentail ( say change to personall honor) does the rest of the affect related to that stat change as well?
A: No; you will continue to use the stats described on the card. It just won't have changed. Zen Faulkes, "Wanton Destruction redirection and Asahina Sekawa (Exp 2)", 25 Mar 2005 - Q: is change the type of pentail rediecting it?
A: No. It would have to use the word "redirect" to do that. Zen Faulkes, "Wanton Destruction redirection and Asahina Sekawa (Exp 2)", 25 Mar 2005
