Rules Q&A
- Q: A *Moneylender* with no tokens on it is still considered a "gold-producing holding" for the purposes of cards like *Crystal Mine* and *Barren Fields*,
A: Yes. 0 Gold is still gold production for the game's purposes. Martin Lund, "Rules for 10 July 2004", 13 Jul 2004 - Q: According to the archive, the number of tokens gained by Moneylender is determined by the gold spent on it, ignoring cost reductions. Is it correct to imply that increasing the cost of Moneylender likewise does not alter its token trait? For example, if I fetch Moneylender with A New Wall, which raises its cost by one, can I still bring it into play for free and give it no tokens, since the Moneylender's trait takes precedence?
A: Moneylender's trait will not take precedence over A New Wall. A New Wall will force you to pay at least 1 gold for Monkeylender.
Gaining the tokens when you first bring Moneylender into play has no cost. It is a triggered effect. Whatever the amount of gold you paid for Moneylender, that the number of tokens that get put on him. Martin Lund, "Rules for 6 May 2004", 9 May 2004 - Q: Can you bow a Moneylender with 0 gold tokens and a City of gold to produce 1 gold?
A: "Reaction: Bow City of Gold as a cost after you bow a Holding to produce Gold. City of Gold produces 1 Gold for the same payment."
Did you bow a holding to produce gold? That's the true question.
You certainly bowed Moneylender, but you didn't ever have a chance of producing any Gold. I'll forward this up the stream to Jeff, but I'm leaning strongly towards "no" on this one. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 May 2004", 6 May 2004 - Q: If the Moneylender has 0 tokens on it, can you bow it and the City of Gold to produce 1 gold?
A: Yes (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 4 November 2003, Part 2", 5 Nov 2003 - Q: If Moneylender is brought into play by paying 0 gold (as has been ruled legal to do)...is it a gold-producing holding that turn (with no tokens)?
A: It is *always* a Gold-producing holding. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 14 October 2003", 14 Oct 2003 - Q: 2) What is the cost of Moneylender? Is it the amount of gold one pays for it, or is it zero, with tokens you can remove to produce gold?
A: At the time you're paying for it, it's whatever you spend. At all other times, it's 0. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 March 2003", 4 Mar 2003 - Q: A question came up in a game the other night re Moneylender and Bushi Dojo:
Moneylender: You may pay any amount of Gold when paying for Moneylender. Put one Coin Token on it when it enters play for each Gold paid. Bow Moneylender and remove any number of Coin tokens from it to produce an equal amount of Gold. Limited: Bow Moneylender and pay any amount of Gold to add one Coin token to it for each Gold paid.
Bushi Dojo: Bow the Bushi Dojo to produce 6 Gold when paying for a Follower or an action that creates a Follower token.
So can one use the Bushi Dojo to produce 6 coin tokens for Moneylender? We allowed it for the sake of friendly play, but on reflection, it seems that the BD produces gold only "when paying for a follower or action creating a follower token" and this combo shouldn't work.
A: This seems crystal-clear to me. Moneylender itself is a Holding, not a Follower, and its action does not create Follower tokens. The Bushi Dojo can't pay to recharge it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 January 2003", 21 Jan 2003 - Q: Could you bow Moneylender when it has no tokens on it using Yukinaga's ability and produce 6 gold for a follower?
A: It's a Gold-producing Holding, ain't it? Sure. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 30-31 December 2002", 31 Dec 2002 - Q: How does Aramasu's Pride's ability to give a holding +4 gold production work with Moneylender? Does it give Moneylender Bow: Produce 4 Gold, do nothing, or increase it's own ability to produce gold equal to it's number of wealth counters removed +4?

A: It would produce gold equal to the number of Wealth counters removed (minimum 1), plus four. Jon Palmer, "Moneylender and Aramasu's Pride", 6 Jun 2014 - Q: Hi, Once Moneylender is in play, can you use the reaction on yasuki Tanimura or Luxurious silk to put new wealth tokens on it?
