- Erratum: Reads, "Morning Glory Castle 6PS 4GP 6FH Limited: Bow your Stronghold to target one of your Honorably Dead Phoenix Clan Personalities and one of your Provinces. Discard a card from that Province and fill it with the targeted Personality, face-up. You may bow one of your Shugenja instead of your Stronghold if the Personality is a Samurai." [MRP, Diamond Edition, 27 October 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 150
- Q: Can I use Morning Glory Castle to put a Personality into a Province that does not have a Dynasty card in it? A: Yes, if it's empty simply because you've run out of Dynasty cards. The Castle tells you to target "one of your Provinces" -- that can be any of them -- and then says, "Discard a card from that Province and fill it with the targeted Personality". Those are separate effects. The filling effect does not care if the discarding effect did not happen. Morning Glory Castle will not let you put a card into a Province that cannot hold cards, such as one with Togashi's Shrine. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, April 26, 2004, p. 10
Rules Q&A
- Q: Can I "ressurrect" someone with the Morning Glory Castle onto a empty province, for example a province with a Shinsei's Shrine?
A: Shinsei's Shrine says that the Province can't hold cards, so no, you can't put cards in that Province.
If the province is just empty because there are no cards available to put there, you've got nothing stopping you from putting a card in there. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 April 2004", 27 Apr 2004 - Q: Can the ability on Morning Glory Castle be used multiple times a turn (like bowing two shugenjas to get two samurai and then the box for one shugenja)?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 8 March 2004", 9 Mar 2004 - Q: First, I cannot use Yasuki Trader to get Spells from my discard pile while SH is my stronghold, because "your" is defined as "Controlled by you. (Cards not in play have no controller.)" on pg. 105 of the DE rulebook, therefore the spells are not "your spells", and not an item.
So how does MGC ever get a personality back from the discard pile, as no card in a discard pile has a controller, and therefore cannot be one of "your" cards?
A: Because Morning Glory Castle says "one of your Honorably Dead Phoenix Clan Personality". There is only one place those can be: in your discard pile. Explicit card text overrides general rules. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 8 March 2004", 9 Mar 2004 - Q: When a personalty is brought back in Morning Glory Castle and placed in a Shamate Pass province, does the Personality count as being revealed and gain the Pass's bonus?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 December 2003", 13 Dec 2003 - Q: When using Morning Glory Castle to return an Honorably Dead Samurai to a Province, it is indeed legal to bow a Shugenja Follower, correct?
A: Yes (stronghold text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 1 December 2003", 1 Dec 2003 - Q: If my opponent is playing Morning Glory Castle, and he gets a Shinsei's Shrine in one of his provinces, can he use his stronghold to refill it with a personality that has been destroyed?
A: He can, but the card is immediately discarded. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 21 November 2003, Part 2", 22 Nov 2003 - Q: and my opponent is playing Phoenix in Morning Glory Castle. My opponent has a bunch of unbowed peeps including one unbowed Shugenja and one unbowed Shiba Danjuro. I play Unrequited Love on one of my opponent's Shugenja. My opponent reacts with Danjuro[.] When Danjuro bows to redirect the action, Danjuro is now BOWED. Is it still legal to target him with Unrequited Love?
A: Yes. He could have been legal targeted with the action originally (he was unbowed), so it can be redirected to him. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 November 2003", 13 Nov 2003 - Q: Spells in your discard pile are not "your Spells", so they don't count as Items too.
Given this how did Morning Glory Castle work?
A: Er. The Stronghold should probably say a Persoanlity you own, but seeing as how it specifically refers to an Honorably Dead Personality, the First Cardinal Rule (not to mention the Rule of Obvious Legality) kicks in. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 November 2003", 13 Nov 2003 - Q: Can [Morning Glory Castle] be used on a province with no cards[?]
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 3 November 2003", 3 Nov 2003 - Q: I'm playing Phoenix, using Morning Glory Castle. I have a Shiba Yoma with an experienced version overlayed on top of him. The Shiba Yoma has been hit with a Sinister Transformation so he's 5 force 4 chi. Unfortunately, some unruly peasants rise up and smoke my man Yoma. He's dead. Here's where it gets a bit strange. a turn later I bring the inexperienced Yoma back into a province, and then into play. So what is his force and chi, and why?
A: The inexperienced Yoma cannot be shuffled back into the deck (Gold Edition rulebook, pg, 37). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 September 2003", 22 Sep 2003 - Q: Play this card after the third Spell effect YOUR CARDS CREATE AND/OR INNATE ABILITY YOUR CARDS USE in one turn. Elemental Benefit: Once per turn, whenever a card creates a Spell effect, you may redirect the effect to another target.
so is the Morning Glory Castle, the 9th Kami´s Temple or a fear effect from a personality or follower an innate ability, or is it just for shugenjas?
A: GE rulebook Glossary, p. 73:
] innate ability ] ] An ability on a Shugenja card. Abilities on other cards are not ] "innate." Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 May 2003", 23 May 2003 - Q: if my dynasty is decked out, can I still use the ability to put a personality in one of my provinces[?]
A: Sure. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 18 April 2003", 19 Apr 2003 - Q: Say for instance I'm playing Morning Glory Castle. I play Jotei. I Oath him or tell him to "Make the Choice". Ok so he is now a Phoenix. He dies. I bring him back on my turn. Ok now here is the question when Jotei comes into play - How much Honor do I gain? 4 as per card text? Or 8 as per Rulebook + Card Text?
A: His own trait gives you a flat 4, and paying full price for an aligned Personality gives you his Personal Honor, which is another 4. These are two separate gains...though note that Proposal of Peace and Slander will negate both of them. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 April 2003", 4 Apr 2003 - Q: Does Shamate Pass work on Personalities placed in a province by Morning Glory Castle? In other words, do such Personalities count as being "revealed"?
A: No and no. A card already in the Province must go from face-down to face-up. Jeff Alexander, "post for 31 March 2003", 1 Apr 2003
